- In this video, I'm showing you how to remove popcorn ceiling texture that is fast, easy, and cheap! We plan to add a shiplap to our ceiling, but first, we needed to remove the texture so that the faux shiplap pieces would adhere flat, straight, and strong! We used a $15 tool that you can purchase on Amazon to make this project one that ANYONE can do! We sprayed each section with a garden hose to help eliminate as much dust as possible. We then hooked a bag to this scraper tool that catches the eliminated texture for ease of clean up and mess!
This was quite a tall and large ceiling, so it was a HUGE undertaking for us. Clean up was easy, but still, a lot of work and we recommend covering your floors before taking on this project! Make sure you're subscribed to check out our faux shiplap tutorial!

Whooooo! Way to go! I’m about to try this solo while husband is deployed! Wish me luck 🤪
Fantastic! Love it! tyfs! 😀
I love the advise awesome job guys
If you haven,t already done your fire place I have done two and they look great, I painted the whole thing Grey and then dry rolled the bricks white to give depth and highlights with a sponge.
Really love how it looked afterwards. Both of you make a great team. Nice job. Thanks for sharing
Not only is my popcorn ceiling painted with waterproof paint. But when it was put in someone mixed in marine grade grout.…😭😰😱😭😭😭😭😭
This is so satisfying to watch. I’ve been trying to figure out how to remove our popcorn ceiling as well.
Yes! so satisfying to do as well! You can totally do this!
I’m in the middle of painting my kitchen floor. I bought a stencil from Royal Design Studio over a year ago. I finally have the time and with your tutorial, the courage, to do so. Waiting on my 2nd coat to dry and on to stenciling. 🤞
@@BethanyBrenneman Hi did you do an Asbestos test before removing the popcorn ceiling as I need to do this to my kitchen ceiling an my flat is very old( I live in London UK). Good job what a difference it makes to remove that unsightly texture it's so old fashioned but still in many homes today.☺👏👏
OMG I knew I should've gotten on UA-cam before removal of our popcorn texture, it's a mess 😫
How did you clip the grocery bags to scraper?
what was the size of your room and how long did you take?
Mine didn't go this easy. It looks like you had compound all over your ceiling then it was popcorned. Mine was just compound at the joints. And noticed the texture came off easier on the compounded areas.
Where did you purchase the tool that you hooked your plastic bag on to?
Did you spray it with just water?
The scraper you listed in your items doesn't look like the one you're using. I clicked the link and it doesn't have the metal frame to attach the bag. Can you link that? I'm looking for that exact same setup. Thanks.
hey! I checked the link and that is the scaper we used in the video. It comes with plastic tabs to hold the bag on the metal part and we used a broom extrender to make it longer for better reach.
After you scrapped the texture is it smooth enough to just primer and paint?
No you need to sand the whole thing especially where it looks furry , and if you really want a smooth surface you need to skeem parts of lumps that the finishers didn’t do right so try to float it
Nooo don’t do it will look bad
The Popcorn Scraper Tool appears to no longer be sold on that page, do you have another link where it is available?
Its just a long handled floor scraper.
Home Depot and Lowes have them.
@@Clouwho429 how do you place the bag.
Did you test for asbestos before starting?
Thats what worries me, no matter how careful you are theres always dust left all over the place, in other rooms and walls etc. But howe do you even test for asbestos??
Hope you had it tested for asbestos.
Did you test for asbestos?
Lol exactly.. I do asbestos removal, was thinking the same thing ☣
@@Jo-mp6jd if my house was built in 88 do I need to worry about it?
@@renenay4390 yes i would get it checked for asbestos just in case. Ive seen some places in calgary built 90/91 still have some in the house... leftover materials from the past years that they still built with.
Use a small bucket, physics yo
Or a coat hanger to open the bag more, use multiple bag to make a shoot/slide straight into a trash can
Have you ever attempted to remove texture from your home? Tell me how it went, below!
What is the chemical you used in the garden sprayer?
we just used water in the garden sprayer
@@BethanyBrenneman hot water or cold
You guys did not spray it down first?
As soon as I saw this I subscribed, but I was wondering if you can use anything besides a garden hose to wet it. Should have just be damp? Can you just use a spray bottle? Anyone ... please!!!
you could try a spray bottle, Donna. This spray hose allows for further reach for such a large sized room. If you have a smaller area, a spray bottle might not be so bad, but this allowed us to get a big area done in a shorter time frame. A spray bottle would have taken too long for us.
this is no asbestos contain?
What’s the clip you used to attach to the scraper ?!?
Depending on where you live . Im in Canada and found one at home depot and seen some in other hardware stores.
We just buy a house and this popcorn ceiling probably is like 30 years old, seems a hard work to do ourselves. 😒😒
Hire me
who is we lol i seen the guy do all the work
So much work ….
my bad I should of watch the whole vid before putting my 2cents in sorry ,I'll shut up now .
Is anyone ever concerned about the potential asbestos in the popcorn ceiling? Or we just trying to save money and go with the YOLO mentality? Not trying to be funny...I have one room of my house that needs it removed but am too worried about any asbestos.
Yes, great point! It is extremely concerning and we tested our ceiling for asbestos and it came back negative. There are kits online that you can buy to make sure it is safe to do by yourself.
@@BethanyBrenneman thank you.
How did you clip the grocery bag to the scraper ?
The popcorn scraper comes with six clips.
Did you test for asbestos?
