- Finishing up our Studyball series in the AFC West today with the Denver Broncos defense. We know it’s going to start with Bradley Chubb and Von Miller rushing the passer, assuming both of those guys can stay healthy and be on the field consistently together. But remember that every time we study defenses, I am looking at the big picture, from a quarterback’s perspective...so not necessarily about those defensive ends specifically (although as a QB you obviously DO need to worry about them). It’s really more about what this defense does on the back end. Vic Fangio does a great job of mixing things up, giving you some different looks and having some counters off of that...keeping you off balance. In this episode we’ll take a look at some of the things that really sets the Denver D apart.
Thank you. I understand this defense better than I ever have. And now I understand why some of those nuances take time to learn, why communication is so important to its success.

Kurt, I know a typical way to play QQH vs 3x1 is to play quarters to the 3 receiver side and half field to the solo but why do you think Fangio prefers to flip that?

@Alex Chinikailo in watching these cut ups as well as Rams film, it’s a great way to create the box to the 3 WR side and the backside CB is locked up on the solo WR. The 1/4 safety can look for deep crosser from #3 or just rob underneath routes as well. That backside safety is also involved in the fit while still being able to flood coverage to the passing strength. The more I watch it, the more I love it.

Tyndal needs to understand defenses but I think he can pick it up tho.

You've been drinking from media Kool-aide. First, Fangio would likely have stayed in Chicago. He would not have changed teams for a lateral move. Second, he held this team together last year with band-aides. No team played as consistently hard though they lost their best defensive player the week of preparation for the opening game, lost their #1 receiver, after playing a quarter of football, played stretches without a single starter on the D-line, had fourth string guys playing corner. I think once they had a backup safety play corner because of the flood of injuries. They had an under-performing rookie center, two rookie wide receivers, both top running backs in and out of the line up, and a game when the NFL stabbed the team in the back by making us play without a QB. And yet, no matter who was on the field, those guys played hard! That's because Fangio is a true leader. All the nonsense about time management and such, you do realize is just opinion, don't you. There is no right or wrong when to go for it on 4th down or call time out or punt instead of try a FG. So the media guys would have done things differently. Doesn't mean Fangio is a bad head coach. Far from it!
He can't stop John Gruden's offense that's for sure.

@@sohamdharap983 That's my point. The TV guy criticized the move so fans automatically think Fangio goofed. They don't realize there are more ways than one of time management. And there are so many more important things--like actually teaching and motivating the players and creating a desire to play hard, and so much else. If he were the only coach ever who made a time management decision the media questioned, I might pay a little more attention, but clearly he's not. The fans are the only ones with the hackles raised on Coach Fantio. Not the players, and not the GM.
He wouldn't have left Chicago just to be a DC somewhere else.
I hope vic fanfio comes to the 49ers!
