I'm not Irish, but my soul is. I spent 3 incredible months there some twenty years ago and it just got under my skin. The hospitality of the Irish made me feel at home. I want this to be played on my funeral.
This song is one of so many fantastic favorites of mine ! And yes, I’ve thought this to be played at my funeral. ❤ Lovely song ! We should feel incredibly lucky and so grateful if we have a loving family.
I've only got a drop of Irish in me. I only know this because when my grandmother married my grandfather, she faced resistance from her great-aunt because she was a pure-blood Scot and my grandfather was "English and Irish." That's all I know. Both of my great-grandparents were born in London, and I don't know which of them has Irish blood or how much. That's as far back as I've gone in my family history on my British Isles side.
Van is as Irish as it gets. He's a man of genius and many talents and the world is a much better place for those of us who appreciate what he has given over his lifetime. He is a deeper well than most of those who have garnered more accolades. Not a showman, but a true artist.
He's not as Irish as it gets.... He's a Belfast protestant. Of course, he discovered different religious beliefs over the years.....but he was raised in protestant East Belfast.
On the second verse when the pipes and keyboards kick in, I became Irish. "Might be your best friend; might be your brother, you don't even know." There's nothing else to say.......
Proud to say that Van is one of "Our Own Ones' - like myself a son of East Belfast. Cooler than cool -Van is the Man -Undisputed King One of Ulsters Greatest Sons - The Star of the County Down
"I first heard it on a film when they sang it at the pub in an Ireland it stayed with me since then." Exactly my experience TOO! Bought the DVD 9/12, couldn't let it go.
Several years gone by and I still remember a local butcher, a true Irishman with a faraway look and an Eastern Seaboard accent. I remember watching him walk to work back and forth. It was a tough neighborhood and I didn't know anyone. He always said hello to me and my blue eyed dog Annie. One Christmas, afterward it was freezing cold the day was brighter than white he asked me if I had a Good Christmas. The truth, I asked? He said, Yeah? No. I didn't. And you? He looked at me laughed a bit and told me- No, he didn't either. And we both shared a laugh. A little something. I didn't see him much after that and where he lived someone blew in his door with a shotgun. Then that same year my apartment somebody burned it to the ground on St. Patrick's Day, in the middle of the night; I barely made it out with my dog Annie. Lost everything but our lives. Then awhile back that butcher shop got burned down too. I still think of my cool blue eyed friend. Meeting me on my walks with Annie in cold mornings. The light we shared between two Irish. The way you can speak without speakin' -just a shared look is awl an knowin you still care ~
I know very little or mostly and I acknowledge stereotypes but I love holy Ireland and defiance at least in my mind represents . That's on it self so humane .
Maybe my favorite song of Van’s, which says a lot. The man is a genius. And this song, though lyrically straightforward, stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it. Pretty much sums up my philosophy on life.
Not always. Some people can't count on family. But then again, "family" doesn't necessarily need to be the people you are blood-related to. Never stray from your own ones ... the people you belong with.

Very few people are aware of how many Irish were brought here as indentured servants by the British. If you listen to the Irish/Celtic music of old you will see how much of an influence it has had on our American music.
And yet I have never seen or heard of riots, protests or other bullshit that every other race, creed or religion have done many times over because of “THE PAST TREATMENT “ that was done so very long ago... I have never been to Ireland but I hope before I croak I can get there & have a few with people who may be distantly related to me . Lindsey ... A fine Irish surname I have heard ❤️❤️❤️
@@mariannebroadhead7318 Past treatment you say. Lucky for you that treatment was in the past. The BLM protests are about what is going on still TODAY. If you don't understand that then that discussion is one you shouldn't have anything to say about.

Country music has it's roots in traditional Irish music. So it's no surprise some comparisons could be made there... All you have to do is listen a little harder.
Well I must say this is the most beautiful song I have heard in a long time. This has great meaning today! God bless you Van Morrison...... By the way..... I'm a brown eyed girl!
Remarkable how Ireland was for centuries one of the most downtrodden nations in Europe and now tens of millions of people worldwide have Irish ancestry - like me!
I got to see Mr Morrison as he got out of a limo and went in to do his sound check when I was working installing wifi in the Bass Concert Hall in Austin texas... It was even better than seeing Obama when he gave a speech at UT that I ran the WiFi for...
I have been listening to this man for forty years and then I just come across a song I haven't heard before and I am blown away with the sheer beauty of it. Few people move a heart like Van Morrison and in such an effortless way.
john wints Didn't see that political slant on it. I thought all the prods there were unionists, (at least recently, there did used to be prod nationalists in the early C20th at least), and it was more about the diaspora or just home/identity in general. Not that I really take in all lyrics, it's the tune that gets me
I wrote a note: "one more day with your own ones" on a slip of paper and tucked in my mother's casket, OMG, I miss her so much, RIP Mom.......
We played this at my dads funeral..... best song ever
I did too x
Beautiful.
How true is this song in these times we’re living in ☘️
THE SHEER BRILLIANCE OF VAN TOGETHER WITH THE WONDERFUL CHIRFTANS.
IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT
WELL DONE

So Irish he accepted a Knighthood from the Queen of England
Robbie Montgomery exactly
So did Bob Geldof

Some people just like to hear themselves talk.
in memory of my father, Leo J. Conley, 1924 - 2013. Don't rush away from your own ones.

Van Morrison with the Chieftains is my favourite of all of them
Natalie Merchant was good too.
This song touches my heart and makes me cry every time
What a great song and singer, well done Van
Respect to Van from the Celtic Irish from the old paths and ways of our people. The time before Christian division is the time to back to. Saoirse
On the second verse when the pipes and keyboards kick in, I became Irish.
"Might be your best friend; might be your brother, you don't even know."

It a pity there no lyric😡☘
This song really gets to me. I dont have much longer to live and feel like I an going home to my own ones. I'm Scottish and miss my family long gone.

A musical genius for over five decades......
I agree with you. I am also not a Van Morrison fan, but when I heard this song for the first time, I fell in love with it.
fell in love with this song watching the movie the Matchmaker. this is by far the best version.
Kerrie Hoskins Me too! Obscure movie got me to lovely bit of music.
The Matchmaker, great flick.
I love that movie!

Today they've gone.

+James Schuster This song makes me wish I were Irish! Perhaps it helps me feel Irish. love it
this sends tingles down my spine - 25 years later..
We usually play this at Christmas, I cant help but get emotional as all the family are together and we are cherishing every moment.
CHERISH THE LOVE OF YOUR FAMILY - Best on GOD's GREEN EARTH.
Another great song from Van the Man.....love this man so talented.
Så sant hälsningar från Sweden
I love you Van. Loved your Tupelo Honey too.
Never stray from your old ones......family is everything - the only ones you can count on.
It's your "own" ones; but the sentiment is the same.
Not always. Some people can't count on family. But then again, "family" doesn't necessarily need to be the people you are blood-related to.

Kevin, I know it's your "own" ones - this song for my Uncle. He's the last of my Mum's siblings, and he's my "old" one.
Kelly Ann
so beautiful
This song makes me sad, I lisened to it when I said goodbye to my daughter ,leaving for NZ, for good.
Hi Maria. I'm from NZ and it's a difficult thing for your children to live far away. But wherever your daughter lives here, she will be well looked after.
Don't care nothing for your soul .....love it
I just love this song.

And yet most assimilated to what was becoming the world of America and lead righteous lives. And, not looking for reparations from the Brits.
Very much so. In the Carolinas and parts of Appalachia the dancing steps evolved from Irish and Scottish jigs and reels.

Are you aware that most of us Brits were also ‘indentured servants’ at this time - learn some history , get a life and quit bleating about the past

One Irish Rover. Van the man.
Oh won't you stay
Stay a while with your own ones
Don't ever stray
Stray so far from your own ones
Cause the world is so cold
Don't care nothing for your soul
That you share with your own ones
Don't rush away
Rush away from your own ones
Just one more day
One more day with your own ones
Cause the world is so cold
Don't care nothing 'bout your soul
That you share with your own ones
There's a stranger
And he's standing at your door
Might be your best friend, might be your brother
You may never know
I'm going back
Going back to my own ones
Come back to talk
Talk a while with my own ones
Cause the world is so cold
Don't care nothing 'bout your soul
You share with your own ones
Oh won't you stay
One more day with your own ones
Don't rush away
Rush away from your own ones
This old world is so cold,
Don't care nothing for your soul
You share with your own ones
so deep and apt, i look around and see less and lesss of my own ones... surprised this song hasnt been cancelled yet for reeeecism
