Thanks so much for this. Got my 09 xt as my fist bike and have had issues with it idling loudly. I've been told to clean the cats, so this is a great help!
Forgive me, i just got an 09 and am new to biking. I noticed today a small puddle of gas under the bike. Is that because too much gas is going into the bowl and then draining out of one of those hoses you're talking about?
What prompted you to take it apart? I just picked up an 08, runs great.... On choke, but when I turn it off it dies(I assume the main jet is plugged up). Bike has 1900 miles on in. In the last 8 years it has had 46 miles put on it
My '09 would run w/ choke and idle fine but when I put the throttle on it would die/stall out. Cleaned the carb and all was fixed. The likely culprit was a plugged pilot jet.
A very useful video (except for the shaky camera,). The service manual shows removing a screw (1 of 3, #8) UNDER the battery box to loosen up the airbox/battery assortment to pull the carb out WITHOUT removing the intake manifold. 'trouble is, to get to THAT screw you have to take the back half of the the exhaust pipe off - something the manual failed to mention. Even after I've got the airbox loose it doesn't look like I'm going to get enough play. Any comments out there? I need all the help I can get.
I don't think I left anything out of the video, it is a pain to get the little nut off of the intake manifold and I don't think you have to take the exhaust off or some bolts that's underneath the battery because I didn't, but if it makes a little easier with a little extra work then do it
I didn’t have to take the exhaust off, reach up behind it with a 10mm open end wrench it’ll take forever but it’ll come off. With a smaller hand you can back the bolts out once loosened.
Does having little hands help? Ugh… not looking forward to this project! But it’s my fault as I wasn’t a good bike mom- winter came and I didn’t turn my fuel cock off… now she won’t start… don’t know what else to try next but this. Mines a 2008…. Gearing up for a project… THANKS
Thank you for the information, it was the best video I could find on the topic and it put me down the right path.
Thanks man, makes me miss my old XT500 way easier too work on!
XT500, wow I think I would like that what year was that made in?

Main jet is only in use from 3/4 to wide open throttle!
@@actionfilmz340 yep it was a clogged pilot jet

Omg my head is hurting. Can't see well what you're pointing. Please try to move the camera slower
The carbs on these things are a pain in the ass.
