The thing that made the double turn so PERFECT was that neither wrestler changed who they were, they just expanded the crowd's understanding of their character.

Maybe would have had “Stone Hart” or “Cold Hart” instead of 2 Man Power Trip. Imagine The Stone Hart Foundation with Bret, Steve, Pillman, Owen & Davey. Would have been an insane version of that team to take on DX with Michaels, HHH, XPac, Billy Gunn & Road dog. And Steve would have a built in storyline with Pillman where they ended up allies again instead of feuding.

From my first meeting him in 1994 to recent years, he's proved himself to be a sincere, kind person who shows genuine appreciation for his fans. From taking a "non-fan" viewpoint of the situation, as you mentioned, I believed Bret had good reason to be upset. I was at both the 1996 Survivor Series(still have my ringside seat)and WrestleMania 13--both Bret vs. Steve matches were incredible. If there was no finger poke of Death and Bischoff didn’t relieve Austin and him going to ECW and then WWF, it may have happened. You’re right that WWF had the better main eventers and it’s true that they were isolated. Plus, that red, white and blue ring ropes and Vince’s very old-man yawn talking made it look so lame. I haven’t watched the 1997 documentary but looking at that year it was like a 180 and set the stage (no pun intended b/c of the titantron) for something to see.

Heel Bret was amazing. I was 12 at the time and hated his guts, even knowing that wrestling may not be on the level. What’s scary is that that Brets character that felt that he was screwed all the time actually blended very nicely with his real thoughts after Montreal, making all of 1997 seem very surreal in hindsight. Bret’s heel promo’s in WCW were great too, especially when he talks about how El Dandy shouldn’t be questioned as a top challenger to his US title compared to guys like DDP and Piper. It just sucks that WCW had no idea how to utilize him.

Best match in the history of pro wrestling. An absolutely perfect match. The first "double turn". And Steve stunning the ref after the match was the exact moment I became a Stone Cold fan. He was an anti-hero. Which was a term wrestling didn't even have a word for. He wasn't a heel or face, he was both. And it worked.

Everything that was happening in WWF between late 96-late 97 was great. The matches, storylines and growing excitement each week was incredible! You could really feel something big was happening, things were moving into new places. The whole Austin/ Hart Foundation storyline was brilliant. Bret played the Heel in the US brilliantly, and whenever wwe went up the road into Canada, it was fascinating to see him get the face reaction in the home country. It was such a good opposite to the heat he got in the US as Austin's ascendency was becoming irresistible to see and feel. It was an amazing time for wwe. Alongside all of that, the Undertaker, HBK, Mankind- they were all getting better and better angles and momentum.

There has never been a turn, let alone a double turn, pulled off as perfectly as this one was. From the story work leading up to it, to the match itself, nobody can ever touch the work everyone did. When I saw everyone, I mean everyone, from Guerrilla Monsoon as the “president” to Vince, Jerry Lawler, and Brett and Austin. Everyone played their parts so perfectly. Brett calling for color absolutely sealed the deal. If only they could claim causing the blood to perform the way it did lol.

This match was a classic example of storytelling in wrestling, and of one iconic superstar passing the torch to an up-and-coming future star. Bret Hart respected Steve Austin and appreciated his work ethic, and it shows. He won the match, but he also made Austin look like a million bucks and planted a seed for him to take off and become one of the biggest stars in the history of professional wrestling.
WrestleMania 13 totally sucked, other than this match. Just this one match alone made it worth the money. They could have just cut out all the other matches and had this one only, and I still would have paid the full price of admission. That's how good Bret and Austin were here.
