Even though it was a year and a half between SS 96 and when Austin won the belt at Mania14, it was clear he was going to be a (even THE) top guy in the company. Plus, that Mania13 double turn was perfectly done. Austin went on to become the top face and Bret did some of his best mic work as a heel through 97. That's how it should have been at WM14. But Vince couldn't afford Bret at that time. Had that not been an issue, then I'm also sure that Bret would have did the honors for Austin in a big Mania rematch for the title.
Just one of the many hundred's of stories about Bret being told by the guys he worked with just how great he was. Bret was spot on about getting color in the WM13 match, no doubt about it. Austin bleeding as much as he did really enhanced the finish, the double turn, everything.
These matches proved Steve could work pre neck injury. After his neck injury he turned to more of a brawler and never did high spots. I've watched some of his WCW stuff lately and he was a great wrestler.
That's the Rock and Stone Cold thanking Bret Hart for giving them both the push, Bret was the main draw at the time. He didn't need to give any Wrestler a push and to think he knew these 2 stars could go on to be big stars and would take his place. It didn't matter to him because he loved the business and wanted the best for the business. Then you get Triple H and Shawn Michaels trying to block the rise of The Rock, that's the difference in Bret Hart and men like Triple H and Shawn. That's how great Bret Heart was, he for see two of the biggest stars in WWE history before anybody else. Shawn and Triple H didn't want anybody taken their spot and would rather block people from being big stars so it not affect their position. When Shawn screwed Bret, he really thought he had the power and Vince would listen to everything he said and he was the main man. He found out the hard way, when Vince said he had to drop the belt to Stone Cold and Shawn didn't want to but had no choice. The Undertaker was standing behind the curtain to make sure Shawn did the job for Stone Cold that night. Shawn then got mad because Tyson put the Austin 316 shirt over his face, then after went to the back to confront Vince and Tyson. Luckily for Shawn Shane Mcmahon calmed him down and he left the building. That was a man who thought after getting rid of Bret he would be the main man, him and Triple H thought they would run things. Then that happened to Shawn and The Rock and Stone Cold took over, when Shawn came back he had no choice but too accept it. That was the reason The Rock never wanted to do any favours for Shawn in the ring and they never faced each other. So thanks to Brat Hart and Vince not being dictated to by Shawn and Triple H, we witnessed the Attitude Era's biggest stars in Austin and the Rock. The Rock and Stone Cold have always appreciated what Bret did for them and that's why they were never close with Triple H and Shawn at the time. I think deep down Vince knew he made a huge mistake with Bret Hart by screwing him and I bet he would not do it if he had the choice again. I believe if Bret had of stayed in the Attitude Era it would have been even better. We would of seen Bret against Kurt Angle, Jericho and The Rock, he would had some classic matches.

They both helped each other. Bret solidified Austin as a top guy and Austin revitalized Bret's career which led to some of Bret's best mic work as a heel in 97.
Call me crazy, but that's the best match I've ever seen in my view. Pretty much all of my favourite matches involve Bret Hart. Steve had an incredible, unbeatable run in the WWF, but in terms of actual matches there, I think probably because of the neck injury, his best wrestling matches as a whole were in WCW, particularly with Brian Pillman in the Blonds and working singles with guys like Ricky Steamboat. They had some incredible, overlooked matches. But I think the neck injury basically ended the career of Steve Austin as a technical wrestler. Certainly, being more a brawler played into his gimmick a lot more, but as a wrestler, he was terrific in WCW and it's easy to see why Bret was the guy who wanted him brought to WWF in the first place. All Steve needed was the right gimmick and he got one in WWF. There's nobody like Bret Hart in wrestling today, a guy with the credentials and the desire to help other guys get over. Everyone's in it for themselves, or they think wrestling is a circus act rather than a psychological, kayfabe contest. That's why I'm not as big a fan of Shawn Michaels as some people are. He was athletic and did a lot of risky, spectacular moves, but as a wrestler, I much prefer Steve's and Bret's and to some extent Brian's before the injury.
Stunning Steve v the likes of Muta, Rhodes, Pillman, Sting, Steamboat, Flair etc might be the best wrestling I’ve ever seen. He was off the page before all his knee/arm injuries (still damn good in WWE pre-Owen piledriver).

I said to a friend… no one was f**king with Stone Cold in an in ring perspective prior to his neck injury. In 1997, Austin was easily the best wrestler on the planet before than injury
Had Bret stayed in WWE into 1998,he ABSOLUTELY would’ve put Steve over clean from a Stunner at WM14. For Austin to close that chapter then do the same thing with Rock for 15,17,19 would’ve been perfection.
Stone Cold and Bret Hart's early 1997 feud was the moment that I became a wrestling fan for life. Stone Cold is the GOAT of pro wrestling in terms of best star ever in my opinion. Bret is right there with HBK as best in-ring wrestler. What do y'all think?

To this day, Austin vs Bret at WM13 is the greatest match I've ever seen. Something very special happened in that match that I haven't seen since, maybe Rock vs Hogan or Taker vs Michael's came very close. It's why Bret is the best ever to me. He made every match mean something.
The three greatest matches in the history of wrestlemania are 1) Bret vs Michaels WM 12 2) Bret vs Austin WM 13 3) Austin vs Michaels WM 14. That is just a mere coincidence. A damn respect to the three greatest legends of all time.
Austin vs Michaels wasn’t that good in ring wise. It’s one of my favorite matches but technical wise it’s not great. It was an extremely important/historical match for sure. WWE likes to lie and say Austin’s path to the top began with King of the Ring 96 when that is a bald faced lie. After KotR Austin didn’t even have a match at SummerSlam 96. He wrestled Yokozuna in the Free for All before the PPV. He didn’t even appear at the September In Your House and wrestled a midcard match against HHH at the October 96 PPV. It wasn’t until he faced Bret Hart at Survivor Series 96 that he started to become a superstar. His feud with Bret is what led to his massive popularity in 1997. By 1998 he was a made man.

Bret Hart is your favorite wrestlers favorite Wrestler...Austin “Bret went over every match against me/I’ve never beaten Bret Hart”....”and I’m cool with it”
Agreed. Kevin Nash, Xpac, Mr. Perfect, British Bulldog, and Owen all had their best matches with Bret.
Had immediately click this video fast because of notifications
Same
I clicked on this immediately because of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin!
Dork
that was a great call being busted open made it that much more memorable
Can you imagine Hogan, Shawn, Hunter or even Cena never beating another top guy in their whole career and being totally cool with it?
Great interview!!! Thank you for sharing it!!!
The biggest what if’s for me
is Chris Jericho debuting in the WWE in 1995. He would’ve been actually apart of the Attitude Era. Basically in the start of it.
Man, imagine Bret vs. Jericho... A dream match for me for sure. Both of them are very high on my list of faves.
I'm so glad I was only 12. It made it so much more impacting because I was certain wrestling was real at that point
Same!!! As cynical as wrestling fans are today or that you become yourself around 14/15,im soooo glad I saw it as a 9yr old and remember saving the WWF magazine with Austin’s bloody face on it
Macho Man / Steamboat, Undertaker / Mankind steel cage, and Austin / Hart are my top 3. That match made me LOVE Stone Cold. That ending was so bad ass.
Wrestlemania 13 is the best match ever. Savage/Steamboat 2nd for me
Haha I miss the ol day of wrestling. I don’t think it’ll ever be quite the same
This is a much talk about WM match. I love their survivor series match. They were trading move for move. Loved It!
Yeah, their Survivor Series bout is excellent too. One of my favorites.
UA-cam's suggested I watch the Montreal Screwjob video again so I just got done catching up on more of Bret Hart's work throughout the decades, what a great talent.
Enjoy, you will appreciate more because guys aren't made like that anymore
The greatest work of all time
Bret was amazing. Never hurt anyone. Got People over too.
To this day, Austin vs Bret at WM13 is the greatest match I've ever seen. Something very special happened in that match that I haven't seen since, maybe Rock vs Hogan or Taker vs Michael's came very close. It's why Bret is the best ever to me. He made every match mean something.
The three greatest matches in the history of wrestlemania are
1) Bret vs Michaels WM 12
2) Bret vs Austin WM 13
3) Austin vs Michaels WM 14.
That is just a mere coincidence. A damn respect to the three greatest legends of all time.
Austin vs Michaels wasn’t that good in ring wise. It’s one of my favorite matches but technical wise it’s not great. It was an extremely important/historical match for sure.
It’s a damn shame both were hurt or else it probably would have been the best match in mania history.
Also one of my favorite build ups
@@johnmcnamara8741 Their match at King of the Ring 97 is better except for the DQ finish. Both guys were healthy in June 1997.
One of the best matches of all time.
Simply the greatest match of all time, followed by Bret vs Michaels at WM 12
Stone cold vs bret hart rivalry is my 2nd favorite rivalries of stone cold steve austin.
My all time fave feud in all of wrestling history is Bret Hart/Hart Foundation vs Stone Cold Steve Austin! Austin is The King! The GOAT!
this and harts match with 123 kid are my favourite matches of all time
Thanks for mentioning the match with 1-2-3 Kid! It's definitely a great one. The finish when Bret holds up Kid's hand nearly gets me in tears.
@@Sanguivore itbwas a fantastic match, hard to find a poor hitman match. I'm not an emotional person, but, yeah, that ending in the kid match nearly had me.
@@DUFFYISBACK I agree with you completely! When I wanna throw on a match but don’t wanna be fussed with actively seeking out a good one, I just throw on any old Hitman match and know I’m gonna have a good time. He’s about as reliable as can be.
(And huge props to Kid in that match as well. I think he’s a helluva underrated wrestler and wish he got more credit.)
This is the greatest match of all time
The 96 Survivor Series match is unreal. Almost, if not better than their WM13 match. What these 2 could have done together through the end of the 1990s
The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be.
My favorite match as a kid
Epic match, great interview 👍👍
No one would EVER talk shit about Hart in front of Austin. Lol
2 guys knew what they were doing.
3 of my top 5 mayches all time are Bret vs Austin at WM13, Bret vs Diesel at "Survivor Series" and Malenko vs Rey Mysterio Jr at 96" Halloween Havoc.
its funny cuz brett said in an interview that stone cold was in shock from the audience and he had to call the whole match and that austin chickened out about the blading at the last second and brett said, no were doing this. 😅
in other words, brett told a very different story about the same match
2 of the best in the business. Hitman and Stone cold were worthy of the top card spot.
If you beat Bret, you went over. If you lost to Bret, chances were that you went over. One of the greatest of all time.
IMO this was the best rivarly
Best match ever.
I should have known stone cold will be on talk is Jericho after the broken skull session
My two favourites
A lot of wrestling fans like the MSG match better. I always give the nod to non-gimmick matches when compared to gimmick matches.
Regarding the Mania match, Bret was on point regarding the blood.
The birth of the Attitude Era!
Rip the legend
BRET VS STEVE WAS SO AWESOME BECAUSE THEY WERE BOTH BELIEVABLE TOUGH GUYS!!!
It's my favorite match!
People just don't know how good the Austin was b4 the neck injury
Bret Hart was the best. I enjoyed Austin and so many others, but Bret just made things look so real. Always. Brets match against 123 kid was the greatest.
One of the best things about that match was when a fan was able to rub Steve's, Bret and Shamrock's head.
Daymn bret hart’s confidence to colour austin.
If you look at so many bret matches the opponents best matches ever were with bret. Nash, perfect, piper, bulldog, austin, owen, 1-2-3 kid and so many others
Austin was the John Cena "never give up" before it even started.
I still have to believe Bret and Austin don't like each other. Their feud seemed so real.
Stone Cold limping out of Wrestlemania 13.
The camera stayed on him long enough, no ADHD cuts or commentator yelling verbal garbage at you.
Yeah bret is awsome
Probably the best wrestlemania singles match
Nope, but a classic all the same
Best match ever
Can we not get video? Yall need to get together so we can see you all
Bret was the a total pro!! Arguably the 1 of the best on Wrestle Rushmore
