Thank you for sharing this. This is very helpful. I've been keeping a few very old hard disk drives, afraid to just throw them away in the garbage bin for fear of data in it could be recovered by criminals. Now I can confidentally dismantle them and destroy them one by one.
Physical destruction not needed; hooking up to any other PC and doing a full format (not default quick format) overwrites the disk with zeros. Unless you were some exotic spy that perhaps the NSA was determined to break out special multi-$million dollar gear on to try to determine write states on drive 'x' writes ago (allegedly possible), an actual single overwrite with random data or zeros will take care of it. And now you can still use your drives as auxiliary storage if they still function.
Here’s how you do it Open the drive Take out the platters (aka the silver disks) Take a hammer Crush those disks until they are literal particles Salvage or throw away the remaining drive
more efficient: electric sander. While the whole metalic layer is reduced to dust and the only thing left is the glass fiber structure of all platters, you're done.
awesome video and I have been stressing about how to do it properly!!!! But one question I have a paper shredder that shreds CDs . Would that do the trick?
No need to cut the sticker/label. Just force the driver through the thin plastic until it locates in the screw head which is the same as the rest of the screws. When you unscrew the screw it rises through the plastic. If you do this last the cover will come away with the screw held in it . Saves risking stabbing yourself with a knife!
If computer is damaged, then destroying the hard drive is enough to remove all the data completely? Or one also has to destroy ram. Could you please reply? I don't know much about computers.
Hard drive recovery is not what you would imagine. Companies like drive savers literally recover data from hard disks that have been physically crushed.
I knew a friend who worked in hard drive recovery and he told me they often got customers with hard drive drilled into them with multiple holes. Yes you guessed it. They were able to recover over 90% of the data on the platters.
Be careful if you cut them. Last time I did this, I was luckily wearing eye glasses. When I began the cut, the disk shattered and shards of material flew up into my face.
You stopped too soon. How to destroy the 3 disks? Would bending them work? Can they be bent? What about heating them over a flame on the stove, would that destroy the data? Seems it would be the easiest, if it works.
@@GeekStreet That's good news then because I've lost lots of data in the past by hard drives dying lol. Nowadays you can fix the bad sectors etc with the mechanical hdds but not with ssds as they have no moving parts just memory chips.

Are these disks metal or Plastic as when removing the final disk it exploded and now I don’t know if it’s risky to inhale
Thanks, they had no evidence in court!
no way
Mine was a little bit different, but the steps are all the same. This was a huge help. Thank you.

Here’s how you do it
Open the drive
Take out the platters (aka the silver disks)
Take a hammer
Crush those disks until they are literal particles
Salvage or throw away the remaining drive
or if you have like something that can make metal molten, just get some molten metal and chuck the platter in.
You shouldn’t go cutting corners.
I just watched a video on how to take out the hard Drive, then watched this to how to remove / Destroy the hard Drive,
Great Video thanks.
Brilliant! Exactly what I needed. Thanks very much.
Thanks for not speeding up 6 screw removal. Always wondered how that was done.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. It helped me dispose of my hard drive.
more efficient: electric sander.

I just bought a new hdd and i'm going to try this hopefully it don't void my 5 year warranty.
Just open it and hit it with hammer. No one wants your data and even with little damage it is propably impossible to recover files.
Thanks for the video. Mine had 8 screws and only 1 disc inside
HUGE HELP, thanks!
Very Helpful. Thanks.
So grateful for this information.
Thanks. This has been very useful for me.
I took the patters out and cut them in half with a tree pruning tool. There’s something strangely satisfying about that. 😉
Well it helped because after watching this, as I have a number to destroy, An angle grinder is a definite purchase. 👍
Thank you!
Thanks so much. I think I can do it.
Alternatively take your HDD out to the shooting range 🤣
Just hit it with a sledge hammer, that'll smash all the disks in one fell swoop!
Word. Sibbling has some old drives with data on it they want gone and don't feel safe any other way. where'd you get the screw driver tho? ;p
I don’t see where you mention what kind of tools are needed for those screws. Regular screw drivers don't work.
If you dont need it just drill through the screw
awesome video and I have been stressing about how to do it properly!!!! But one question I have a paper shredder that shreds CDs . Would that do the trick?
Damn, it's beautiful inside 😍
😍
You think using a sandpaper on those 3 discs is enough to destroy them? THe discs in 3,5 hdd is hard as nails and not easy to break.
Get a screwdrive and put scratches in them, that should be more that enough.

have the same drive ST3000DM001 hopefully it doesn't fail
Good luck!
Many thanks for this! Can I claim my Level 1 IT certificate now, please? 😊
What kind of screw / screwdriver is used?
Seems to be a Torx or Star Screwdriver
T 8H works for me
What tools are you using?

Destroying the hard drive is enough.
@@GeekStreet just to be sure hard drive is the one with those glass discs and have some information written on the case of it? Right?
@@aaryangautam4273 that's right.
RAM is useless...
Instead of wasting time taking it apart, toss it in the BBQ right on the coals and walk away. DONE!
Hard drive recovery is not what you would imagine. Companies like drive savers literally recover data from hard disks that have been physically crushed.
Nah... Too much unscrewing! Just use a powerdrill and drill through them all at once. Save a lot of time and hassle!
I knew a friend who worked in hard drive recovery and he told me they often got customers with hard drive drilled into them with multiple holes. Yes you guessed it. They were able to recover over 90% of the data on the platters.
...but oh what fun taking it apart!
Take a hammer to it until you have nothing left but a pile of rubbish
@@kayrealist9793this was so hard for me to read! Lol 😵💫
Be careful if you cut them. Last time I did this, I was luckily wearing eye glasses. When I began the cut, the disk shattered and shards of material flew up into my face.
Or just drill a few holes through all three disks without removing one screw or opening the case.
i use the drill in 5 seconds, end of the story..
I love hard drives wiping lol 😂
Ps: Seagate Barracuda 3TB (ST3000DM001)? How strange 😂
Well guys, welcome to the watchlist
Or you could use a fishing magnet..... or you could burn them with thermite.
Throw the thing in coca cola, the acid should do the job. Says alot about that soft drink.
😂🤣
I prefer thermite or the incinerator
You stopped too soon. How to destroy the 3 disks? Would bending them work? Can they be bent? What about heating them over a flame on the stove, would that destroy the data? Seems it would be the easiest, if it works.
Curious about heating them on the stove too.
You could have recovered the data from the hard drive if you didn't already before disassembled.
There was nothing important so no biggy.
@@GeekStreet That's good news then because I've lost lots of data in the past by hard drives dying lol. Nowadays you can fix the bad sectors etc with the mechanical hdds but not with ssds as they have no moving parts just memory chips.
Data loss is always a nightmare, I have a server with mirrored drives to hopefully protect against that.
You can distroy it by free program and cell it again
Nobody talking about the fact it’s 3 Terabytes?
Use a weed burner till they crumble as mine did.
Hard not to respect man with a Leatherman.
😂🤣
you dont have to open it, just drill it
They make great coasters! Only way to destroy those is burn them!
This was just a disassembly video lol
scratching lol. no thanks.
i would rather degaussing and then burning it
Seriously??? Thats what u came up with ?
Fast forward to 5:50 to actually get the answer on how to destroy the disc! What a waste of time watching this crap !!!
Why your hands look like 70 old grandpa Hands
As a 72 year old woman, I can say you don't know what 70 year old hands look like. This man is much younger than me and has nice hands.
Put it into microwave lol
howto destroy a hard drive place it in the microwave and turn it on 5 sec will clear out all data on it
And it would blow up too!
And I take it after you have done that you've had run for the fire extinguisher right?
