Unmistakable, no one can slide like this man. Rod, you'll forever be missed and idolized. You and the boys got me through the 70s with my head held high. Miss ya brother!
Rod was a great player but even a better man. There is a Little League field named after him where he lived in NH. A dear sweet man.He was very humble with a great sense of humor. Rod enjoyed making people smile...and he made plenty of people do just that. To know him was to love him. It was an honor to have met him. He was just a great guy and is missed. His two solo CDs are excellent. When he played a room everyone hung on every note he played.
I lost all my emails of me and Rod talking guitar ....I lost them when I lost my computer several years ago ..what a player Mr. Unique ....such a masterful player ...never got his due ...but he is one of those guys !!!
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Price about three years before his death... He and a few of his blues associates got together to perform for us at a Moose Lodge (of all places) in Auburn, Washington... The capacity for patrons in the facility would only allow for a maximum of 120 bodies, so those involved in the process of issuing invites to the selected people to attend were being careful not to over-book the event... As it turned out, for one reason or another, only about 25 people (including the bar-maid and the facility staff) were in attendance for the gathering -- yet Rod (and his band) put on a stellar blues show that was totally out of this world (they sweated through a couple of sets which totaled around three hours time).
I just recently started really, really getting in to Rod Price. I cant believe this great guitarist has been right in front of my face all these years but ive failed to recognize him as one of my influences. ive always loved Foghat but never really listened like I do now. when I listen to his guitar work now, I seem to hear a lot of little things in between the licks that I never heard before and albums I never listened to all the way through, like Rock n roll outlaws. that's amazing stuff. this song here is one of the first ive listened to of his solo work. so I thank you for that. I can tell by reading the details you wrote and the photos you put in this, you really admire this guys music and I dig that. this was a very classy video man, well done.
Hi Chuck First thanks for the nice comments about the video. I've been a huge (perhaps the biggest) Foghat fan since the beginning. There was something that hooked me from that very first album, and yes the subtle things laced all through their music that I picked up. As I mention in the write-up that he stressed that playing guitar or music goes beyond technical ability and must come from the heart. This is what I've always heard on their albums and playing live. I believe he stands out more then most for that reason. His technical ability was superb, but I think most of it came from his heart and you could see that in his face when live on stage.
HaveAStellarBirthday you certainly could, his face said it all. I live near Wilton Nh where he lived when he passed away. kinda hard to believe this guy was living in my back my yard but then again, id believe anything knowing they recorded "Fool for the city" in Vt. pretty close to home as well. im a big slide player myself. Rock n roll outlaws really got me in to listening to these guys close and studying what was really going on in the music. Rod's playing always seems to carry the flavor of this band, while lonesome dave was the voice, Rod was soul for sure. hey thanks for sharing this song with me, the more I hear it, I cant stop but love it. be well my new friend.
chuck jones That's cool that you're a slide player. Are you playing in a band? I first heard Rod play this wonderful tune live in which he dedicated it to Lonesome Dave, and got the CD that evening. West Four is a terrific album with every song very strong. Yes, Rock and Roll Outlaws is a favorite album as is Night Shift. Here the title track (Night Shift) I think is one of the great tunes in Rock. It's perhaps my favorite (it's my wife's favorite), as well as Roger Earl's personal favorite Foghat song. There's a lot meat in the song with dual leads by Dave and Rod, with the ending part of the song playing lead together. Anyway I will get around to doing another video for my wife with our wedding song (yes a Foghat song).
HaveAStellarBirthday that's a great song "night shift" I am in a band, I go under another name (never use your real one here on you tube ;-) I also do a lot of software designing for digital audio. because up until about ten years ago all I did was record audio in my studio, reel 2 reel. but then I saw the digitl age coming and jumped on the train early, got involved in the designing aspect and now work closely with developers, designing different software for digital audio recording and my studio is now 1/2 digital and half analog. boring to most folks I suppose but ive made a few youtube tutorials. well I look forward to your next video in the future and thanks for all the info. your a good man !
So very talented; Rod Price; musicmanship and emotion - now I just have to buy a copy of West Four. WOW ! Similar to commenter "chuck jones," I didn't pay so much attention to Rod Price. ( I discovered Foghat at the release of Fool in 1975.) But he was always there - he really was right out front - I guess LD, Tone, and Roger Earl were shinning so very brightly too. Then you must agree that without the bottle slide, there would be no FOGhatters. Favorite Price-Foghat tunes are the ones that just didn't get airplay - Hate To See You Go, Dreamer, Drive Me Home and other Price performances on ...Take It Or Leave It, Terraplane Blues. THANK You for posting - I'll have to catch up to Rod's later works !!
Yes, I agree with everything you and Chuck posted. Like I said what he told me that emotion from the heart plays a huge role in playing music, which goes beyond just technical ability (which of course he had). You hear it in his Foghat days as well as his solo work "Open" and of course "West Four". You wonder what could of been next. In fact I told him that I was an astronomer, and that astronomy and music go far back together. I said to him how about something like Cosmic Blues? He smiled..
Every time Foghat comes to my town my friends get all fired up to go, I always respectfully turn down the invitation. No disrespect to Craig and Roger, but I'm just not interested knowing that Rod "The Bottle" isn't going to be there.
On his first solo CD called "Open" it's Shakey Vick (also plays harp). His second solo CD "West Four" (this song) it's Rod himself on vocals and of course lead, slide, and dobro.
Rod wasn’t just immensely musical. He was a musical genius. He played slide guitar like nobody else I’ve ever heard. Just magnificent. RIP, Rod.

THE BEST...MOST UNDERRATED GUITAR PLAYER OF ALL TIME
So beautiful! Awesome guitarist, I know he missed lonesome Dave. Long live the legendary Foghat!

This such a jewel!
Very well done Galaxyman, Rod Price great guitar player and oh he could work that slide.

He was amazing, and a nice guy. Very pleasant to talk to.

Thanks for posting Galaxyman. Kinda reveals the man Rod was.

Yep, and obviously I feel the same. Miss Lonesome Dave also.
Who is singing on these solo albums by Rod? I have been a fan since the early early days of Foghat.

Put on your fog hat and enjoy the music
