how can you not love this guy? look at him , so lovely and his "little kid" spirit never died. he keeps it alive in him. so excited everything he is doing i love you gavin
Fantastic technique, I'd never think to part block the softbox the way you did to maintain the black background. Good to see your smoke machine is back ☺️
After watching his video I looked into my photo store room and found all these items (including smoke machine) and did not realise I had the combination of items to do the same shoot. Met Gavin at the NEC photography show a few years back and have always admired his way to show in simple terms.
Im amazed how you used just one light, one color gel and ofcourse photoshop to make that amazing photo!!!!! I didnt realize how easy it was. Thanks G-man!
Very grateful for this. Sometimes there is genius in simplicity. Recently, I was stuck without a softbox but I had a window that had terrific natural light through it. Inspired by this video I grabbed a very soft solid black t-shirt and used my backdrop clamps to attach it to the blackout drapes in the room, thereby creating a reasonable effect similar to the one in the video, with about 4" of light on either side, about 6" of light below and a little more light above. It took me 3 shots to get the settings on my Nikon sussed and to figure out where to set the height. I used 2 lenses and in a total time, including setup, of less than 30 minutes I got a couple dozen gorgeous pictures that are getting really positive feedback. Best part was a really happy model who didn't have to wait for endless setups, retakes, or hold poses for extended periods of time. Would have never thought of even trying that improvised setup if I hadn't seen this video, so I thought I'd definitely share the extension of the approach. Many thanks!
As a stressed New Yorker and fellow Olympus shooter, your videos are always a great escape. They elevate my creativity/Skills and encouragement to keep shooting! Thank you!
You can realize the gradient color-effect already in-camera using the non-colored flashlight and cover the left-side of the rim-light area with a red sheet of color-gel and the right-side with a blue-colored sheet of gel (I use sheets Lee Filters). I did not try this but I'm convinced that this will work. And still with ONE lightsource. I like your approach of DIY. Sorry for my crooked English, I'm Dutch.
Thank you Gavin!! What an amazing trick and demonstration. Just last night I was wondering about black foamcore to reshape an octobox into a stripbox… it kinda blows my mind that putting foamcore in the center creates this other outcome so well. Your videos are the first I watched in learning techniques, and now part of my living is through photography. So, thank you for your spirit, enthusiasm and generosity!!
Absolutely amazing. Thank you, Gavin! I don't shoot models or fashion, but I learn so much from your techniques that I can sprinkle into my senior and athlete shoots. Such a complex looking image made simple. Thank you!
Hi Mark. Now I'm thinking if you scaled this up, how would it look with an athlete in full football kit. Not something I can so easily test in the UK ⚽🏈
Fantastic technique with an extraordinary result made so easy, fantastic photographer and teacher. Thank you immensely for all your tutos and your incredible energy!!
i wonder how i missed this one. very good. i LOVE the one light videos because i have the best understanding. id like a model or 3 but i can kind of figure it all out i did this with a big shoot through umbrella, and a sheet of black foam-core hung on the nub of the umbrella. i didnt know i even did this one! nice....
super Fantastic. I can can keep watching Gavin for 12 hours with no boring
