The late great Carol Barnes. She went before her time. The same could be said of Thames, TVS and TSW, all of whom provided an excellent service to their regions. Thames and, to a lesser extent, TVS also made a superb contribution to the national network. Carlton swept away everything that was so good about its predecessor and replaced it with cheap mediocrity.

Was a shocking 14 months for itv. Losing Thames especially and the other companies and then losing top flight football rights to sky in May 92 crippled them even more. Itv felt like a premium channel up to 92 but the difference from 93 was there to see.

Yeah, John Howard Davies from the BBC pretending to be freelance infiltrated Thames, made deliberately bad shows then fired Benny Hill who was bringing in millions in export profits so no wonder they lost the franchise then Davies went back to the can't compete so they cheat BBC.

To be honest Alan Sugar should not have part of the FA decision considering the conflict of interest he had with Sky and seeing how he had insider information and informed the ITV bid to Sky Sports and then heard telling them “to blow them out of the water”.

RIP Carol Barnes - she hosted the 540 a lot between 1989 and 1991... Less than six months later the 540 would be dropped in favour of the new-look ITN Early Evening News with John Suchet... Lots of change on ITV at the time as evidenced by the report about four of ITV's lead broadcasting companies losing their licences... Thames was the best of the lot. As said in the report, Carlton were not expected to be worthy successors to Thames, and frankly to say that they were a pale shadow of Thames Iran understatement... TV-AM were initially remembered as a failure but was doing very well by 1991 so their franchise loss was a major shock at the time too...

And yet Thames & TV-am got their maths spot on because both Carlton & GM-TV couldn't keep up their bids. And then on 1 January 1993, ITV went crap.

  • @grahamhenderson6833

This was the BIGGEST MISTAKE in the history of ITV, Thames losing to Carlton, TVAM to Sunrise/GMTV now using the name of TVAMs show Good Morning Britain, TVS lost out to Meridian who mostly used indeependant companies to make its shows where TVS made their own and others for the ITV network and then TSW losing out to Westcountry.
Granada and Carlton buy up the new and existing companies and then the two companies merge to form ITV PLC, so in the south of England has gone from a region that made programs for the people of the region to a broardcaster who no longer has a TV Studio complex now Northam has been sold and redeveloped to just regional news made in the region, I beleive only two of the original studio complexes are left Anglias complex in Norwich and Yorkshires in Leeds, Granada left Quay St to move to Media City in Salford.
ITV now gets a big fat ZERO from me now

I remember the days when television stations (BBC and ITV) relied on clocks for announcements into the World News. Ian Stirling, the Scottish born TSW announcer, links into the ITV Evening News using the clock and Carol Barnes presents the bulletin. I'm sorry to say neither Ian nor Carol are with us now.

Mike Morris was not best pleased when he heard that TVAM would not be having its franchise renewed. TVAM subsequently lost its in-house news service and standardised on bulletins contracted out from Sky as a cost cutting exercise but Lisa Aziz and selected reporting staff would be kept on.

Looking back did any of those pompous managing directors realise the threat they were facing from satellite television. Granted when Sky launched it was crap but they were all very aggrogant thinking they were untouchable. I wonder now if they advertised those 16 franchises again, would anyone want them?

    • @Rassilon72

@Robert Comer ITV isn't split into franchised areas any more, so this scenario would not present itself, however, in my opinion, there would still be a demand to run an ITV franchise if the opportunity came up, but the regional programming opportunities of the 70's and 80's are long gone. The sad thing about this whole debacle was that the ITC abolished all the annual franchise payments after a few years, making a mockery of the whole process. Today, all of the regional companies gave been bought out by Granada/Carlton and ITV is a shadow if it's former self, obsessed with celebrity this and that in a desperate attempt to increase its advertising revenue. Such a shame.

The Thames decision was no real shock: Thatcher swore to bankrupt them after the Documentary they made a few years before, called Death on the Rock - when an SAS team killed four IRA Terrorists who were about to bomb a marching band on Gibraltar. The decision was nothing but pure, political malice.
Thames still sort of exists, but many mergers and acquisitions have taken place, leaving ITV a complete and utter shambles these days. The massive premiums they had to pay to the Tory Party for their licenses, financially knee-capped them just at the time there was increasing competition coming from America and Satellite.
Pity really: Britain's Commercial TV stations were probably the highest quality service in the world.
Today...hell...as bad as the USA and equally lame.
But that's the Tories for you: if something is working and people like it - they will put a stop to that!
