They cut the styrofoam into squares so that it is easier to feed into the machine that melts it and turns it into larger sheets, which are then brought back to this machine to be cut into smaller squares, and then back to the machine to make it into larger pieces. This process continues in a cycle until somehow profit is achieved.
Fairly sure this is done in order to re-melt it into recycled new pieces for packing; why would they bother doing this if it was just trash to be thrown away?

When you hear "the styrofoam noise", do you get something sort of, vaguely like a cold band that runs up and down your body (it's not really an accurate description, but it's the best one I have lol)?
