- HBO's His Dark Materials season 3 published two episodes every week, therefore the finale experience includes not just episode 8 but also episode 7. "The Clouded Mountain" and "The Botanic Garden" play out as an explosive conclusion followed by a more serene epilogue, although episode 8's closing minutes carry the most of the emotional weight of the His Dark Materials season 3 finish.

She really redeemed herself. I remember disliking her sooo much in season 1
I just got to the end tonight and bawled my eyes out when Marisa died especially when her Daemon reached for Lyra I wasn't expecting her to go like that as I haven't got around to the books yet but I'm majorly pissed at Philip Pullman for this also very bitter with Lyra and Will having to leave eachother

This is show is soo underated! I loved this series from the start and even re-read the books. That finale was soooo goood!

@@yyyhj7895There is a companion trilogy to the series called The Book of Dust with the third book supposedly coming out this year. However I won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t get an adaptation because while I liked the first book (La Belle Savage) it wasn’t on the level of the His Dark Materials novels and I really didn’t like the second book (The Secret Commonwealth).

The show deviated a lot from the novels, but it was still excellent. My only two criticisms are that the show should have been shot all at once, like Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, because the books take place within the span of a year at the most, not four or five as the series implies. Also, I personally didn't care much about how the show portrayed the Land of the Dead. It wasn't nearly as dramatic and agonizing as in the novels. I could also nitpick about race-swapped characters, since Lyra was shocked to see people of different ethnicities coexisting in Will's Oxford in the novels, but that didn't take away anything or diminish the quality of the show, and it worked just fine.
They missed A LOT of things from the book, like when Baruch, Balthalmos, and Will are walking. They are attacked by opposing Angels. One that was holding will Down screamed and bellowed "REGENT". And the sky opened to see a massive angel coming down with a huge spear pointing down at the three of them bedore Will kills the angel thats holding them down and the three of them escapes through a portal that Will created.
okay we get it you know how to read. Now shut up and just enjoy what was given.
I wish we could aleast see them reunite in the land of the dead and finally be together

@@vimalbidwai4912 on the Wikipedia Lyra silvertongue/Belaqua has Will parry as her significant other, and they promised also they would meet and see eachother again in the afterlife (which I believe that) there love for eachother is strong as they are in their own oxfords (worlds)

So hard to find commentary on this show. I've read the books 5 times over, only read the ending twice though. Too emotionally gut wrenching, heart stopping pain. I watched the show with my parents after already watching seasons 1 and 2, and didnt mind starting again and then waiting for season 3. It was an amazing experience to watch this with my parents since I'd grown up with the books. To see the absolute mastery of Page to Screen this show exemplified i could tell them with confidence that i could have read them the books out loud and they would have heard the same story. 🎉
So here's a heavy question : was Lyra destined to have a unhappy ending?
I usually thought that things would have snapped back to normal and Marissa returns to life.
Marissa alive and being by her daughter's side while Lord Israel remains dead. Remaining dead to pay the price for his rebellion and for his destain of his own daughter.
Mary didn’t introduce Will to Lyra. They met in Chitigazze before Lyra met Mary.
1: will's dad stayed in another world for a long time, i guess he never met his demon?
2. cant they jusy break the knife, close all the damn doors then just open 1 to travel through and close it every time? will has been very responsible throughout the series.

Also, in yhe grand scheme of things - the knife was being used for 300 years for many doors so that's a lot of holes. They can close the rest and leave one open until they die (which will be no more than 90+ years) . It wouldn't really make a change to leave just one open. Or to move between worlds every other year.
And also(!) the knife was broken once, why didn't the angels closed the rest of the doors then?!
I refused ti accept this ending. For me it ended 30 minutes before the actual end of the episode.
It's been 2 days since I finished it qnd I can't get over the ending. Such a shit excuse to Seperate them. The Universe used Lyra then threw her away when she fulfilled her "destiny".
I was so annoyed by the ending. There was this big buildup for three seasons and we were given to believe the battle between Asrael and the angels would be a big deal and change things. It changed nothing and was of no significance at all. I mean I literally thought this was humans against gods level stuff. Then what do we get? The love Will and Lyra have for each other is so monumental it fixes the world? They were friends mostly and only were in love for a few days, and so what, people fall in love all the time, so why is their love any different? Then there's all that Eve stuff. I mean the whole thing seems like it's taking up very heavy and interesting ideas and then it all collapses in the end into nothing. Maybe the books are better.
Exactly. It was all rushed. They had just decided to go with their feelings and love each other but decide to practically all of a sudden that they are like married to each other and vow to never to love anyone else for the rest of their lives? They were only like 17 or 18. Come on.

Exactly!!! I just finished watching the last episode and I am like seriously, this is what it's been leading up, those two kissing to save the world, bruh I was hopping for so much more. And their love seemed rushed too
Eu escrevi alguns pontos que não gostei da obra (tá em português)
1- Na primeira temporada já mostra q é uma historia com aqueles mesmo bgl de escolhido que é muito batido e quando tem isso eu sempre fico com um pé atrás
2- Tem uns furo de roteiro meio podre tipo os personagens ficam muitos dias em mundos diferentes dos deles, inclusive tem o pai do Will que viveu anos fora do próprio mundo e de repente é colocado na trama que se você viver em um mundo diferente do seu você morre. Aparentemente no livro isso já é meio que mostrado antes com um personagem envelhecendo mais rápido fora do próprio mundo, mas na série isso é só largado do nada uns 3 episódios antes do final
3- A Mary apesar de não ser chata é TOTALMENTE IRRELEVANTE na série e desde o inicio falavam tipo "tu vai ser importante" "tu vai mudar o mundo". Ela é importante? Não. Ela passa 80% da série) fora dos conflitos principais. E mesmo quando ela estava sequer perto dos conflitos principais ela não teve um papel importante. O arco dela é legal? Até é. Mas é completamente deslocado do restante da série. No máximo ela teve aquela pequena relevância no final, mas dava pra seguir pelo mesmo caminho sem ela.
4- Tem a faca que é a faca mais forte q existe. Ela corta tudo e consegue corta até o véu entre os mundos e criar janelas para outros mundos com isso. Só que é dito que ela tb vai ser muito importante pra matar a autoridade Ela é importante? Não. É só uma faca que abre portais mesmo
5- Tem alguns furos na obra que a propria obra sabe que tem e não responde pq não tem como responder, como porque a Marisa só se interessou pela Lyra depois de 13 anos (não sei se nos livros que tá lançando agora isso é respondido)
6- E o final ser meio que resolvido na base do poder do amor não é algo que me apetece também.

Sorry for the really late reply ha ha but she is under the protection of “scholastic sanctuary” (explained at the very start of the series.)which means people in the college are protected from the magisterium. Anyway not everyone wanted to kill her, just people in the magisterium.
Kinda like in star trek and using warp drives, oh i mean the same.
This series had such great potential on being great but in the last two episodes it fell short. Like it didn't show the mother and father deteriorate as they were falling which made me think that maybe they were saved somehow. And the series showing how all powerful Metatron was and all they had to do is grab him to force him into the abyss? And of course the whole old man in the box being freed by Will but he just deteriorated as well makes me think that they probably shouldn't have done that. Plus Lyra's reaction to that was just blank and then she just says she wants to find Pan like her saying whatever. Lol The series had great effects and ideas but the end was not good at all. When Mary explained the reason she stopped being a nun was cause she noticed there was nothing showing her whether she would be rewarded or punished for her actions in life so she decided to go with being a lesbian was basically her saying she stopped believing in God and heaven and hell. I don't agree with that way of living and her saying that influenced Wil and Lyra to go with their feelings and take their relationship to a physical level. To me it felt like Mary was like Satan making them do what should not be done like with Adam and Eve which is bad not good. So it looks like they completely detached the worlds from each other and got rid of God and heaven and everyone can just do whatever they want with no afterlife consequences. This is a horrible ending to me. Plus Will and Lyra falling deeply in love with each other felt rushed. They just kissed and then they were saying they will never love another but each other and live their whole lives still waiting to be together. Lol This absolutely makes no sense. The whole ending of this series was rushed. After seeing this whole series and the horrible ending, I do not recommend it for anyone to watch.
+1 Nobody talks about how much they blundered the ending. I mean some cracks were appearing during the _the land of the dead_ plot, but the last two episodes ruined the whole damned thing.

I just finished watching this show, and I am wtf is this ending. They made it feel like there was so much buildup, but they just rushed it, and the ending was so freaking bland for me. Seriously, the last two episodes kinda ruined the show for me.

I loved loved that show but the last two episodes really ruined it for me. It felt like I was watching another show, it was way too rushed I felt like I was missing a bunch of stuff. Will and Lyra felt so different than the other episodes (like them not reacting at all for ex to that guy in the cube?). Finally the ending, I’m so tired of shows, books movies etc that ends that way. What’s the point?? You telling me I watch 3 entire season wanting Lyra to finally be happy for it to end this way? Lyra (&Will) literally saved the entire multiverse and “destiny” couldn’t let them be together? This is just not logical at all I don’t get why the writer would make it end that way. If I ever watch the show again I definitely won’t be watching the ending ever again.
