Flying in adverse weather using ADM and IFR in Cessna 310 into Palatka, FL 28J

  • Flying a general aviation airplane can be fun, challenging and rewarding. And as with any endeavor involving risk, pilots must use their experience, training and judgement to successfully navigate issues along the way. Come along and fly this Cessna 310Q into a bit of weather and navigate the issues related to the weather systems and its impacts. ADM (Aeronautical Decision Making) is an important aspect of being a good pilot. Maintaining situational awareness and planning with respect to available capabilities (plane, pilot and weather) are key to successful ADM. Implementation of ADM provides the framework to observe, orient, decide then act on all available information. ADM is akin to the OODA mission execution perspective which is well known by fellow military service members. Comments are welcomed and encouraged. Cheers!!

    New viewer here, not a pilot, but enjoy watching this type of content. You are professional, calm, and have no excitement in your voice. Conditions are not the best. Wind rain, the landing to me, was perfect again, not a pilot, but the fact that you criticized your landing and you said what you should have done differently says a lot about you as a pilot. Thanks for sharing. Be careful up there .

    Art, you have an almost 6th sense (if you will) in this arena. Your KSA's are evident, but there's still something special there (IMHO). I hope GA can benefit broadly from what you offer. I still consider you a world-class instructor pilot. Peace.

    Nice flight. You have a pretty high landing speed. Ever have any hydroplane happen?

    Sir, as some others have said, that was a very nice and smooth landing under the weather conditions.
    I noticed the altimeter fluctuated to almost 400 feet in altitude (time 6:06) and then increased to about 610 feet. It appears that you were at about 800 - 900 feet up by looking outside the windows. Is it normal for the altimeter to fluctuate so much or was it a sudden drop in altitude caused by air turbulence that wasn't registered in the video?
    Thank you in advance for your feedback.

    • @billinga
      @billinga  8 місяців тому +1

      The important interpretation of instrumentation is trends and supporting data. Some instruments may fluctuate but understand the trend of the representation and the supporting data. If the altitude fluctuates, then the VSI should reflect this also. If instruments disagree, focus on trends. Thanks for watching!!

    Question... I am not a pilot but in regards to deviating to Ocala... wouldn't Gainesville, Middleburg or St. Augustine been closer for You?

    • @billinga
      @billinga  9 місяців тому +1

      Because system was moving east and north, would have chosen Ocala. Not because of proximity but because of services and weather. Whenever destination not reached, a reposition flight will be needed and whether 15 mins away or 30 minutes away, services and weather are the prime considerations. Thanks for watching!

    This is bad. Talking to the camera, but never says a word to approach because only tuned to ctaf. Pretty sure that plate said NOPT, so don’t know what the procedure turn was about. Never told anybody you were out there doing that. Mentioned a checklist, never touched or read one. Didn’t read the NOTAMs about the fuel being down. What are you doing?

  • @DWBurns

    Look at you, short sleeve Hawaiian shirt wearing, bet you had the heat off too.
    I flew 2 weeks ago, my gatorade froze solid, it was -15*C and snow covered the ground. Oddly airports look just like cornfield that look like parking lots then to throw you off completely lakes are flare and white. There you are flying is short sleeves, green grass, trees with leaves and airports have a black strip where they want you to put the plane. I had to guess exactly what part of the white death was called plowed runway vs what we call the grass runway or as I think of it swift death. Little tire don’t play well in deep snow.
    Show off. Short sleeve wearing flying through water rain, not sever clear icing.
    Looked like a fun and sporting flight around those menacing TSRA’s. Take it easy on yourself, the landing was fine. You did a good job….in short sleeves maybe fly in shorts next time.
    About mid February us Yankees will be back in the deep freeze see what you can do, shorts, Hawaiian shirt maybe a sandy beach at the end.

    Excellent Airmanship Arthur. BTW, have you followed along with a trend among GA Flyers who are adopting the Airline Pilots scenario awareness training called AQP - Advanced Qualification Program? Many YT GA Channels have been promoting to the community now for several years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Qualification_Program

    • @billinga
      @billinga  9 місяців тому

      I am a fan of AQP. It is to combine human factors and systems management for capability assessment and risk management. At its core, AQP is to not fly when more than 3-4 factors not favorable. This could be described as ADM+capability+transient issue assessment = AQP. At any rate, don't fly if your judgement says no. Thanks for watching. Cheers!!
