I am 81 too and I love immersing myself in music too. I also love some of the modern composers being introduced by the younger instrumentalists and following emerging artists as well. If you haven't heard the Clyburn 18th Piano competition (2022) it is worthwhile. They also ran a Junior piano competition this year. Wonderful stuff. Makes me glad to be alive.

Reading your comment and the answers you received, I will tell a story. I grew aup hearing classical music at home and I liked it. I also went to a full season of concerts when I was 14/15 years of age and had the luck of having the local orchestra directed by a fabulous director and the local community arranged to bring that year lots of famous solists and it was a year dedicated to Beethoven dp O heard all piano concerts, the Choral Fantasy and the Triple Concert with at that time world known piano player specialized in Beethoven, the violin concerto played by the young Uto Ughi and of course all symphonies. At 14 years old I used to be absolutely obsessed with Beethoven and I would play his music all day every day, before school, on my way to school and after school. Now 14 years later, I still get tears in my eyes upon hearing this.
I'm with you on this one. I remember accepting some sports award in Gr.10 and was on stage listening to Beethoven with my headphones on. Looking back now it was a little strange but what was I to do? Beethoven is too good.
With all the pocket money I had saved, I bought all of Beethoven's symphonies compiled in a 6-cassette boxset. I was 15 or 16 then. I bought them from Zistkhavar Commercial Building in Mashhad, Iran. I still have the cassettes and even listen to them on my old cassette player to get some of that old feel. When I first started reading Shakespeare's plays, I listened to Beethoven's symphonies. Now when I listen to Beethoven's symphonies, I am reminded of Shakespearean plays. I love it!
I share your appreciation of both Beethoven and Shakespeare. It is, though, a sobering thought to consider that about the same amount of time passed between Shakespeare and Beethoven, as has passed between Beethoven and us. Shakespeare lived in the late 1500s / early 1600s. Beethoven lived in the late 1700s / early 1800s. We're in the early 2000s... there are 200 years between Shakespeare and Beethoven, and 200 years between Beethoven and us.
When the 9th symphony premiered, Beethoven conducted the orchestra. By that time he was completely deaf. He kept time by by watching the players. At the end of the symphony, he thought it was a failure.He had to be turned around to face the audience. He didn't the thunderous applause of the standing ovation.
i'm a girl from generation Z and I swear the guys with my same age are missing some good music. They don't know how much is extraordinary and wonderful classical music and the 6th symphony is my favourite.
Twenty years ago I pulled over on the A19 in North Yorkshire. His 6th was on my car stereo.. loud. The sky was so clear I gazed at stars upon stars and actually had a spiritual experience. At that moment I felt so small in the universe but also so joyful to be in a world that someone can create such beautiful music to move me so much.
He wasn't deaf! His hearing gradually declined until he could hardly hear the orchestra when he was conducting his 9th. Even then, he wasn't 100% deaf.

@@michelleg2901 it's because it's the order in which they were written, however the normal order of 1,2,3 ect is when they were published, listening to them in the 1,3,2 order gives a more accurate progression of beethovens emotions and thoughts.

Herbert Blomstedt, although reasonably well-known, deserves to be included among those at the very highest level of the pantheon of great conductors. His performances are always outstanding; and some of them are the best that have ever been recorded.
It's possibly the finest piece of music ever written... and... I think it should be the Planetary anthem for The People of Planet Earth 🌏... it's the Ode to Joy that makes me cry... it's pretty much how I feel each morning... it's one of those things I don't want to miss... I will stop what I am doing to listen... ya never know... it might not pass your way again Once when I was a kid living in Germany we were coming back from the mountains I think... and traveling down the autobahn... and this guy... driving his Mercedes at 120kph is sailing along conducting, possibly all 9 symphonies between Garmish and Frankfurt... it's stayed with me because I think people are tremendously.... entertaining... and he really loved the music 🎶 ❤ 😍... me too

I have heard Ludwig was loosing his hearing as a teen and was totally deaf in his 20's. These 9 symphonies are nothing short of amazing ending with the 9th which in it's 4th movement with the iconic Ode to Joy. Classical music doesn't get any better than this. Don’t listen to what you hear … Beethoven’s hearing didn’t start having even the minutest of problems till he was *WELL* into his twenties. And he didn’t go completely deaf until *VERY* late in his life.
When we listen to these symphonies, Beethoven's time is connected to the present, and the present in which we live is connected to Beethoven's time and we can communicate with great Beethoven From A corner of Tokyo where is the joys and the sorrows and the solitudes of the human world

What an amazing way to spend a chilly rainy day, curled up in an armchair wrapped in a rug and listening to this recording.!! A profound change of heart for me because I once hated Symphonies with a passion-(early childhood torture!). It's great that we can eventually choose to grow up I think. Thanks BC, you always come up trumps for me. This orchestra was really wonderful and no doubt the conductor had a lot to do with that. Symphony No II in D simply blew me away. My favourite here was No VI, the 'Pastoral' which has everything!!!: Drama, pathos, grandeur, simplicity, humour and sheer loveliness. And Beethoven definitely also had a great sense of humour I kept smiling and even chuckling at some of his ideas, My Stendahl Syndrome no doubt!!!.More seriously , the Ode to Joy in the Ninth was the best I have ever heard. After listening to all these mighty works I can better appreciate Beethoven's genius and talent. Most of us can hear a simple melody and appreciate it, but this giant of a musician could hear and extrapolate every possibility within those he wrote and then expand it, combine it variously with other gorgeous ideas and like the various tributaries and streams heading to a mighty river, lead everything to profound ultimate climax and on to a conclusion that answers all the questions he posed, using a myriad of wonderful harmony and instrumental combinations., How lucky we are to inherit the beauty he created.
Of all the composers I've had the pleasure of listening to, I think Beethoven is my favorite. Though I do, on occasion, expand my musical library and give others a listening to, I always find myself coming back to Beethoven. He may be mainstream, but he's mainstream for a reason.
My first purchase was a boxed set of Beethoven symphonies. I still visit the music when I want to be challenged. Beethoven was a unique event in human history.
I feel like these symphonies can give you the opportunity to retain or even generate imagery! It's amazing! I love it!!!! I am listening in 2023 and I can see why this type of music is so appreciated because it allows you to re-live yourself all over again from childhood. It's truly beautiful 🙏🏾💕 May Jesus bless you!!! I have been forever grateful that my earliest memories are of classical music (my mother, who has since gone Home, would play it on our phonograph when she was cleaning). It has been a constant accompaniment to my life, and a great pleasure. Beethoven, JS Bach, Wagner....outstanding music.
In fact, me too. My parents used to tell me that when I couldn't sleep they'd just play some classical music from the radio for me, and since I was 3 I started listening and actively searching for classical music (especially Beethoven's 5th).
There is no proof against new knowledge greater than ==>> saying "I already know enough"... when we keep our minds and hearts open ==>> life is much more enjoyable ♥

Symphony No. 4 was/is considered to be outshined by the 3rd and 5th symphony. Yet despite the world going around it and picking its predecessor and successor to listen to, it is one of my favorite pieces and is profound in its own way.
Sometimes i wish i can go back to beethoven's time so i can thank him really for what he did for me and the humanity , he means a lot to me :) GOD IF I WASN'T ONLY BORN IN THE 19th CENTURY !!!!!
Compensation: orchestral play is far better now than then, and in far more places. The people who were in the best position, fellows who conducted in the 1920's or earlier like Toscanini, Furtwangler, Monteux, Beecham, Walter and Klemperer who did so into the 1950's, never spoke of any golden age of orchestral play. When he was alive the great composer and conductor Gustav Mahler excoriated the quality of orchestral play in his time (he died in 1911). He got a reputation as a horrible person for that, but he may have been right.
This is actually a very nice performance of Beethoven’s Famous Nine. I’ve been listening to these wonderful works now for over 60+ years, but I never tire of them. I’m a bit of a purist and can’t get away from my two favorite conductors of the Nine: Herbert von Karajan and Bruno Walter. Their renditions are very different but still the essence of Beethoven’s genius. Von Karajan rushes through the music at such a fast pace that it rises up and grabs your full attention with its fullness and utter completeness. You’re left almost panting with exertion of listening. Walter, on the other hand, goes through each movement at a much slower pace so that one can feel the individual notes coming together to create the genius of LvB. Both magnificent performances but viewing the music from different viewpoints: almost in a way like viewing a painting standing back a bit to gain a full perspective, then moving closer to examine the individual brush strokes and other minute details. This performance by the Dresden group offers a very credible middle ground point-of-view and a really fine listening experience! Thank You for making it available.
@@rogueonparmer4870 I second, and he can fully trust in the magnificent Vienna Philharmonic. I also love my Vinyl set with Konwitschny and the Gewandhaus Orchestra from the 1960s which very well competes with the Dresden/Blomstedt 9 LvB's.

Von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic is the finest recording of the Beethoven Symphonies out there, in my opinion. I'm not sure if they're still available on the market, but I would hope they are.
I find Karajan's cycle a bit heavy-handed. Although both the 60s and 70s cycles (on DG) are good, they just don't speak to me. On the other hand, you have Haitink with the Royal Concertgebouw on Philips which is simply fantastic. I also find that Karajan's cycles are sometimes a tiny buy overrated. Marriner did the complete symphonies for Philips, released in volumes, but never put them together. I also highly recommend the cycle with the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, conducted by Bela Drahos on Naxos. Their "Eroica" has the perfect tempo for the first movement, whereas I find Karajan's tempo too slow and underwhelming.
No greatest symphony before & after Beethoven No. 9 symphony. I'm a one of just admirer of Beethoven. However this performance is make me really so happy than ever the others!
Unlike some of the other Brilliant Classics releases this one is by one of the greatest orchestras & a veteran conductor. Everyone who loves this music MUST hear the Furtwangler recordings and the Karajan recordings.

At 14 years old I used to be absolutely obsessed with Beethoven and I would play his music all day every day, before school, on my way to school and after school. Now 14 years later, I still get tears in my eyes upon hearing this.

I'm with you on this one. I remember accepting some sports award in Gr.10 and was on stage listening to Beethoven with my headphones on. Looking back now it was a little strange but what was I to do? Beethoven is too good.

With all the pocket money I had saved, I bought all of Beethoven's symphonies compiled in a 6-cassette boxset. I was 15 or 16 then. I bought them from Zistkhavar Commercial Building in Mashhad, Iran. I still have the cassettes and even listen to them on my old cassette player to get some of that old feel. When I first started reading Shakespeare's plays, I listened to Beethoven's symphonies. Now when I listen to Beethoven's symphonies, I am reminded of Shakespearean plays. I love it!
Reminds me at the same age with Bach's Brandenburg Concertos which I listened to while reading Sherlock Holmes.
I share your appreciation of both Beethoven and Shakespeare. It is, though, a sobering thought to consider that about the same amount of time passed between Shakespeare and Beethoven, as has passed between Beethoven and us. Shakespeare lived in the late 1500s / early 1600s. Beethoven lived in the late 1700s / early 1800s. We're in the early 2000s... there are 200 years between Shakespeare and Beethoven, and 200 years between Beethoven and us.
When the 9th symphony premiered, Beethoven conducted the orchestra. By that time he was completely deaf. He kept time by by watching the players. At the end of the symphony, he thought it was a failure.He had to be turned around to face the audience. He didn't the thunderous applause of the standing ovation.
I don't think it was his ninth when that happened. by that time I'm pretty sure he was long done for conducting

Twenty years ago I pulled over on the A19 in North Yorkshire. His 6th was on my car stereo.. loud. The sky was so clear I gazed at stars upon stars and actually had a spiritual experience. At that moment I felt so small in the universe but also so joyful to be in a world that someone can create such beautiful music to move me so much.

He wasn't deaf! His hearing gradually declined until he could hardly hear the orchestra when he was conducting his 9th. Even then, he wasn't 100% deaf.

@@michelleg2901 it's because it's the order in which they were written, however the normal order of 1,2,3 ect is when they were published, listening to them in the 1,3,2 order gives a more accurate progression of beethovens emotions and thoughts.

Herbert Blomstedt, although reasonably well-known, deserves to be included among those at the very highest level of the pantheon of great conductors. His performances are always outstanding; and some of them are the best that have ever been recorded.

Once when I was a kid living in Germany we were coming back from the mountains I think... and traveling down the autobahn... and this guy... driving his Mercedes at 120kph is sailing along conducting, possibly all 9 symphonies between Garmish and Frankfurt... it's stayed with me because I think people are tremendously.... entertaining... and he really loved the music 🎶 ❤ 😍... me too

I have heard Ludwig was loosing his hearing as a teen and was totally deaf in his 20's. These 9 symphonies are nothing short of amazing ending with the 9th which in it's 4th movement with the iconic Ode to Joy. Classical music doesn't get any better than this. Don’t listen to what you hear … Beethoven’s hearing didn’t start having even the minutest of problems till he was *WELL* into his twenties. And he didn’t go completely deaf until *VERY* late in his life.

What an amazing way to spend a chilly rainy day, curled up in an armchair wrapped in a rug and listening to this recording.!! A profound change of heart for me because I once hated Symphonies with a passion-(early childhood torture!). It's great that we can eventually choose to grow up I think. Thanks BC, you always come up trumps for me. This orchestra was really wonderful and no doubt the conductor had a lot to do with that. Symphony No II in D simply blew me away. My favourite here was No VI, the 'Pastoral' which has everything!!!: Drama, pathos, grandeur, simplicity, humour and sheer loveliness. And Beethoven definitely also had a great sense of humour I kept smiling and even chuckling at some of his ideas, My Stendahl Syndrome no doubt!!!.More seriously , the Ode to Joy in the Ninth was the best I have ever heard. After listening to all these mighty works I can better appreciate Beethoven's genius and talent. Most of us can hear a simple melody and appreciate it, but this giant of a musician could hear and extrapolate every possibility within those he wrote and then expand it, combine it variously with other gorgeous ideas and like the various tributaries and streams heading to a mighty river, lead everything to profound ultimate climax and on to a conclusion that answers all the questions he posed, using a myriad of wonderful harmony and instrumental combinations., How lucky we are to inherit the beauty he created.

Of all the composers I've had the pleasure of listening to, I think Beethoven is my favorite. Though I do, on occasion, expand my musical library and give others a listening to, I always find myself coming back to Beethoven. He may be mainstream, but he's mainstream for a reason.

I bought these on CD years ago, but lost them along the way. Such a lyrical presentation, especially of 4, 6 and 8.
I have been forever grateful that my earliest memories are of classical music (my mother, who has since gone Home, would play it on our phonograph when she was cleaning). It has been a constant accompaniment to my life, and a great pleasure. Beethoven, JS Bach, Wagner....outstanding music.
In fact, me too. My parents used to tell me that when I couldn't sleep they'd just play some classical music from the radio for me, and since I was 3 I started listening and actively searching for classical music (especially Beethoven's 5th).

Symphony No. 4 was/is considered to be outshined by the 3rd and 5th symphony. Yet despite the world going around it and picking its predecessor and successor to listen to, it is one of my favorite pieces and is profound in its own way.
Sometimes i wish i can go back to beethoven's time so i can thank him really for what he did for me and the humanity , he means a lot to me :) GOD IF I WASN'T ONLY BORN IN THE 19th CENTURY !!!!!
Compensation: orchestral play is far better now than then, and in far more places. The people who were in the best position, fellows who conducted in the 1920's or earlier like Toscanini, Furtwangler, Monteux, Beecham, Walter and Klemperer who did so into the 1950's, never spoke of any golden age of orchestral play. When he was alive the great composer and conductor Gustav Mahler excoriated the quality of orchestral play in his time (he died in 1911). He got a reputation as a horrible person for that, but he may have been right.

This is actually a very nice performance of Beethoven’s Famous Nine. I’ve been listening to these wonderful works now for over 60+ years, but I never tire of them. I’m a bit of a purist and can’t get away from my two favorite conductors of the Nine: Herbert von Karajan and Bruno Walter. Their renditions are very different but still the essence of Beethoven’s genius.
Von Karajan rushes through the music at such a fast pace that it rises up and grabs your full attention with its fullness and utter completeness. You’re left almost panting with exertion of listening. Walter, on the other hand, goes through each movement at a much slower pace so that one can feel the individual notes coming together to create the genius of LvB. Both magnificent performances but viewing the music from different viewpoints: almost in a way like viewing a painting standing back a bit to gain a full perspective, then moving closer to examine the individual brush strokes and other minute details.
This performance by the Dresden group offers a very credible middle ground point-of-view and a really fine listening experience! Thank You for making it available.

The marvel in Beethoven's works is the fact that one can never find a repeated melody.
Von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic is the finest recording of the Beethoven Symphonies out there, in my opinion. I'm not sure if they're still available on the market, but I would hope they are.
Thre are so many worthy sets of Beethoven's Nine this one of course, Szell, Toscanini, Boehm, Reiner, Klemperer, Jochum, Harnoncourt....

I find Karajan's cycle a bit heavy-handed. Although both the 60s and 70s cycles (on DG) are good, they just don't speak to me. On the other hand, you have Haitink with the Royal Concertgebouw on Philips which is simply fantastic. I also find that Karajan's cycles are sometimes a tiny buy overrated. Marriner did the complete symphonies for Philips, released in volumes, but never put them together. I also highly recommend the cycle with the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, conducted by Bela Drahos on Naxos. Their "Eroica" has the perfect tempo for the first movement, whereas I find Karajan's tempo too slow and underwhelming.
No greatest symphony before & after Beethoven No. 9 symphony. I'm a one of just admirer of Beethoven. However this performance is make me really so happy than ever the others!

Unlike some of the other Brilliant Classics releases this one is by one of the greatest orchestras & a veteran conductor.
Everyone who loves this music MUST hear the Furtwangler recordings and the Karajan recordings.
