To meet the booming demand for electric cars, should we start mining the world's largest ocean?

- Resource companies and island nations are scouring the Pacific Ocean for vast untapped minerals.
Trillions of rocks found on the seabed contain metals that could power electric cars and green energy.
The Cook Islands government believes deep-sea mining could contribute to the fight against climate change and end the country’s economic dependence on tourism.
But environmentalists say extracting minerals from 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) beneath the ocean’s surface could be catastrophic for fragile marine ecosystems the scientific world knows little about.
With deep-sea mining likely to start in 2024, 101 East investigates how it could affect the world’s largest ocean.
This documentary was produced in collaboration with SBS Australia and supported by the Sean Dorney Grant for Pacific Journalism through the Walkley Public Fund.

We must remember that the ocean provides 70% of the oxygen for the planet. We still don't know the potential impact on the deep-sea ecosystem, and just imagine the carbon that has accumulated on the ocean floor being disturbed.
I know right, it's not as if there are deep sea thermal vents that continually spew co2 🙄
The problem is that capitalists don't care about wrecking the planet as long as it makes them richer.
The one who really harms the environment is us, humans.
Then stop producing children...
Lol who is us? I never asked for steel industry or any other and I certainly did not invent something thats goin to do major damage.. I’ts not my fault that I was born into reality where I have refrigerator since childhood. Shift the blame on big boys man not us…
@@projector1991 But you for sure like using it, and keep consuming always more of it 🤦♂️ Part of the blame is on all of us, as corporations produce what we want to consume.
Here's an example. In the last decade, the sales of big 4x4 SUV kept increasing in North America. What did car manufacturers do? They stopped selling smaller cars and hatchbacks and created more 4x4 SUVs. And for this, you can blame it 100% on the consumers.
As the sales of 4x4 SUVs keep increasing, then you shouldn't be surprised that oil consumption is increasing as well...

That prime minister sounds like Stockton rush, saying the people who call call out risks are anti science, anti innovation, jumping the bandwagon
He ignores concerns by specialists and continues doing what he wants, profit.
He is a Crook, he likes to borrow money, I wonder what happened to 80 million dollars been borrow this year
He didn't start all this it was the prime minister before him who signed off.
If this is another corporate shareholding business, they’re going to cause damage. They will find the cheapest cost cutting method to extract these minerals at the cost of the environment. They won’t invest in mitigating damage.
This is the most important point that the story missed.
Unfortunately, we all benefit from corporate shareholding businesses. If someone can come up with a formula to restrict the massive profits that the big corporations have historically realised, then we all might reap the benefits of research, exploration and exploitation?
@@peteypops that’s “if” we can all benefit from the realized profits. Otherwise we obtain no benefits at all.
The average CEO wage has risen over 1300% since 1978.
As long as they maintain low cost of overhead which includes keeping wages down, forever if possible. Also includes using profits for stock buy backs to manipulate share prices to artificially increase instead of reinvesting in the company through wages or machinery.
I just don’t see how you can say we all benefit from Wall Street when the main purpose of a CEO is to lookout for the best interest of the shareholders.
@peterwhitmore6842 No, WE don't benefit. The rich get richer while we get a poisoned planet. Stop repeating "trickle down" myths.
That's precisely how the capitalist system operates. It's inherently evil.
The perspective your organization provides is extremely important in the world. I pray that more people, especially the most closed-minded, will be moved by the spirit to pay more attention.
Hmmm, nickel is magnetic. I wonder if that can be used such that only a percentage of the nodules are picked up, in a way that keeps the disturbance very small. I'm thinking this way because a big fat "NO" often falls down in the face of industry and big money, where a carefully-designed "SOME" answer can work for both sides. Many people in those island chains are extremely poor, and some of those governments will give up too much control of their ocean territory because of the needs of their people. I'm concerned that difficult times are coming on this issue.
Who ever thought that green energy is clean, it's actually dirty. Clean for the end-users, but disastrous from which the minerals are sourced.
The oil and gas industry remains THE largest source of pollution in the entire world.
Al Jazeera is Qatar's state media... Qatar is an oil producing country and relies on this industry for nearly all its income... It sounds to me that they want to make "green energy" look worse than it is so that we keep consuming oil for as long as possible.
12:42 At this point, I lost it. Completely lost it.
I don’t think any scientific research is truly independent…too many institutions have to rely on big business to exist…governments are no better, especially when most politicians have vested interests.
Any resource dependent technology is no solution to climate crisis
And your solution?
@@pedrohpires6608 It's a predicament, not a problem. Problems have soutions, predicaments don't.
That includes the resource dependence of "green technology" does it not?
Climate crisis or just another organized religion.....follow the 💸💸
@@pedrohpires6608have less babies.
You have no kids you get clearance to do whatever you want. 1 kid, no penalty. 2 kids carbon tax. Each kid extra is extra tax. Reverse the child write offs. I know is drastic. But the greenest thing you can do is limit the population
One of the best documentary so far for 2023 👍🏻
Just fracking but underwater. You take out a key part of the food chain the effects could be broad.
It’s all well and good drilling for minerals offshore, but how will you mine them once found
We need to protect the oceans not do more damage. We need to find better solutions not quick ones.
The best way to solve an environmental issue is just create another environmental issue.
Hard no from me, the deep ocean has not been studied enough to just start doin things down there. Several new land based deposits have been found and some battery tech is also being tweaked to use none or less.
They are not the only company with this kind of business around the world damaging the sea beds that's a huge concern to climate change
Stay away from our Pacific home!!!! GO MINE YOIUR OWN LAND!
Forget mining. first start cleaning it.
Job well done Lucy!
No we should not, is my initial opinion. But i do not know enough yet. I will investigate further and form a more complete perspective.
Madness!
its not an eco friendly option. breaking a coconut on a new ship. Thats an old tradition of my people when you bless a canoe or big ships.
Al jazeera english news is the best news in the world!
It is a standard with which channels have to be compared!
It is a voice of the voiceless!
It is the real face of the powerful people!
It is the most neutral channel!
It is the safety of the earth and the living things in it!
It is a sign of a civilised world!
It is the presence of humanity!
It is a love to human!
It is the unity of the world!
I like Aljazeera, but they also have been a medium for American and Zionist propaganda at times as well. Like all things in life, you should take them with a bit of salt.
Al Jazeera is often very good. It has a problem though, in that it can't really report news that the Qatari ruling family finds unacceptable.
Not really there are many technology of making batteries 😅 hope to choose the harmless 😊 Electric cars must be the future (again) this time with batteries 😉 keep up with good work 🍻
How much have you people extracted from the sea since being offered the exploration license?
What a great piece!
Saline batteries are replacing lithiam batteries. I Googled it.
"You [other nations] destroyed nature, so we want to do it also..."
Ahh, yes, solve your economic and brewing social problems by willingly walking into the resource trap. While doing more value worth in damage than the value of resources extracted. But hey, it makes money for some private companies and the politicians that they bought. Autocolonization is fun!
You said that on your phone that works with a lithium battery, powered with electricity that might have been generated by burning coal or natural gas...
If I ask you if this is going to be your last phone ever, I guess that the answer will be no. Thus, some resources need to be extracted no matter what.
The oil and gas industry remains THE largest source of pollution in the entire world, and Al Jazeera is Qatar's state media... Qatar is an oil producing country which relies on this industry for nearly all its income...
It sounds to me that they want to make "green energy" look worse than it is so that we keep consuming oil for as long as possible.
In other words, humanity is doomed, wichever way you look at it...
Silly, you watch to many movies. New mega deposit has been found on land in America anyway.
These people are still learning like the rest of the world they are not professional the difference between taking the risk to succeed their goal Kia Orana! Hellooooooo.........
Deep sea mining will happen. We need to quickly determine which areas need to be protected.
Resigning ourselves to death-by-capitalism is exactly what the rich want us to do.
Why corporations and corrupt politics have to destroy everything,?😊
Because we won't stop overconsuming all kind of things. You said this on your phone that works with a lithium battery, and powered with electricity that might have been generated by burning coal or natural gas. Will this be your last phone ever? Will you stop using all forms of transportation and only use a bicycle for the rest of your life? If the answer is no, then some resources will need to be extracted.
If this pans out it is going to make some of the most far flung and poorest provinces of these island nations some of the richest in the country which will open the door to better education, health care etc.
Ohhh God a South African 😮😮😮!!! Okkkkay let's see about this.
How many $ was the PM paid?
Alot of money so he can buy Crack from his mate Albert Nicholas he's a MP
make them FIX the Plastic problem b4 thinking of doing this. look at what we have done to the land. Sad, $$$ is all they care about. inpact of what they do wont be felt till they are long gone & can throw it off to something else. disgusting the way we Rape our ONLY HOME !
So while we're not exploiting these resources to get renewable energy, we'll keep consuming oil... that's extracted from the deep seas.
We need to decrease our population!!
Happening right now around the world e.g. war in Gaza mining industry and occupation right
Nothing but greed
I pary you all dei 😂😂😂an that ship. Go down with you raos
