To meet the booming demand for electric cars, should we start mining the world's largest ocean?

  • Resource companies and island nations are scouring the Pacific Ocean for vast untapped minerals.
Trillions of rocks found on the seabed contain metals that could power electric cars and green energy.
The Cook Islands government believes deep-sea mining could contribute to the fight against climate change and end the country’s economic dependence on tourism.
But environmentalists say extracting minerals from 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) beneath the ocean’s surface could be catastrophic for fragile marine ecosystems the scientific world knows little about.
With deep-sea mining likely to start in 2024, 101 East investigates how it could affect the world’s largest ocean.
This documentary was produced in collaboration with SBS Australia and supported by the Sean Dorney Grant for Pacific Journalism through the Walkley Public Fund.

We must remember that the ocean provides 70% of the oxygen for the planet. We still don't know the potential impact on the deep-sea ecosystem, and just imagine the carbon that has accumulated on the ocean floor being disturbed.

@@projector1991 But you for sure like using it, and keep consuming always more of it 🤦‍♂️ Part of the blame is on all of us, as corporations produce what we want to consume.
Here's an example. In the last decade, the sales of big 4x4 SUV kept increasing in North America. What did car manufacturers do? They stopped selling smaller cars and hatchbacks and created more 4x4 SUVs. And for this, you can blame it 100% on the consumers.
As the sales of 4x4 SUVs keep increasing, then you shouldn't be surprised that oil consumption is increasing as well...

Unfortunately, we all benefit from corporate shareholding businesses. If someone can come up with a formula to restrict the massive profits that the big corporations have historically realised, then we all might reap the benefits of research, exploration and exploitation?

@@peteypops that’s “if” we can all benefit from the realized profits. Otherwise we obtain no benefits at all.
The average CEO wage has risen over 1300% since 1978.
As long as they maintain low cost of overhead which includes keeping wages down, forever if possible. Also includes using profits for stock buy backs to manipulate share prices to artificially increase instead of reinvesting in the company through wages or machinery.
I just don’t see how you can say we all benefit from Wall Street when the main purpose of a CEO is to lookout for the best interest of the shareholders.

Hmmm, nickel is magnetic. I wonder if that can be used such that only a percentage of the nodules are picked up, in a way that keeps the disturbance very small. I'm thinking this way because a big fat "NO" often falls down in the face of industry and big money, where a carefully-designed "SOME" answer can work for both sides. Many people in those island chains are extremely poor, and some of those governments will give up too much control of their ocean territory because of the needs of their people. I'm concerned that difficult times are coming on this issue.
