Greetings from Ohio United States. I'm partial to the Cherokee. I have a 99 same setup and color. The G Wagon is awesome but not as cheap ro build or to fix when it breaks!!
It's crazy that most the negative G Wagen commenters think its a new $100k+ truck. The G in this video is from 80s and probably costs around $10k or less.
Nope. Bought one recently(82) for around $15K, soft top, nice rig, everything works, hydraulic lockers....it will climb a straight wall. I'd take it over the same amount of money spent on a cherokee any day of the week.
no it isnt. its a 463 but an older one. im german i got a 290GD for like 7K in very good chape. these really arent nearly as expensive as the people think they are
My 4.0 inline 6 is super cheap to work on and I've never been to an auto store that didn't have the part I was after. It's like the glock in the 4x4 world
I used to have same 4,0 litre but the limited one i prefer the sport but the 4,0 is way to expensive to run in uk i wish i put a diesel engine in it i have a diesel cherokee now but not a xj :(
My wife's account here but I want to say I've had 17 vehicle's mainly cause I love a great automobile I'm only 30 but I've had 7 xjs with the bullet proof 4.0 and the equally bulletproof toyota made aw4 transmission yes I said Toyota made as they were produced in that factory in Japan by yes Toyota and the only thing to ever go catastrophic was when I was doing 75mph on the freeway and blew a rod threw the block leaving a 7" hole in it sent me off the side costing to a stop safely thank God and that was only cause it was my 2nd one and I bogged it in deep water into the intake was by myself and opened the throttle butterfly used my shirt to soak the water in the intake manifold out then was back on the road but I was very young and did not know about silt in the mountains and 2 day later she gave out fault picked a junkyard engine tranny and t-case up for 800$ flat drove it till someone t-boned it so yes the in my opinion one of the most reliable die hard vehicles ever made wich is probably why they stopped production along with fast changing vehicle safety standards well that's my very long story and 2 cent's cheers mates.
both are awesome. I like the G more myself, but that's just personal preference. the G is far more capable stock, but the XJ can be modified for cheap and be a very capable vehicle offroad.
As a fully loaded AMG version, then maybe 200k 'numbnuts' This is NOT an AMG and will cost a fraction of the AMG. Look up shit before spewing garbage. Thank you.
Oven Proof Varies on the location and condition. A Cherokee in good condition with a fair amount of miles will typically run from 3-6k depending on the year here in WA. Also, aftermarket parts aren't cheap. 😅 My Jeep friends can confirm haha.
hi, am lucky enough to have both. a 1999 XJ with 4 inch lift in jaguar emerald green and a 1999/2000 G500 in amg designo daytona blue with 9 seats for the kids. love them both for different reasons.
yes, you are lucky definitely :) sorry, I haven't seen many comments, thanks for watching, you can follow the videos and photos on our website top-djir.com/
It's just you lol no offence but really the jeep and G wagon were about equal I give all deserve props to the G wagon I would like to own one for my payment driving if mainly nice rigs. But having had 7 xjs outta 17 vehicles I'm a little bias I must admit.😁
Pretty much stock 5300lb G verses 4300lb lifted , much bigger rubber than stock, lower gearing aftermarket lockers etc, etc, etc. Yes it is cheaper out of the box and to repair. The Gs RARELY break when beat on . I don’t mind Jeeps if that’s all I could afford and wanted to be like everyone else. Unfortunately most new G Wagen owners are total douche bags, but some of us make them earn their keep. By the way I’ve wheeled in Moab and other places with some $120,000 Jeeps that worked well but just can’t hold a match to the G Wagen’s solid none rattletrap road manners. Both good vehicles, just different classes.
Anyone who wheels in vehicles that expensive are either really stupid or just to rich for there own good. Especially when you can build up a Cherokee like this for fairly cheap and it will go just about anywhere.
What what what?!?!🤣🤣🤣 a g class can take a beating????!?!?!? U must be a fool thinking a g class would take more of a beating than jeep. My 18 year old v8 stock cherokee has been taking a beating for yearsss. Still running perfectly to this second. Last winter had a smart ass in a g class with all the offroad gear switches and shit think u could follow me i look back and all i can see him doing is switching through his options and none of them are doing him any good🤣 and my other 1997 chevy suburban would crush a g class offroad

I've had 2 Cherokees as work vehicles, one a 2.8, one a 4.0 liter, one after the other, for about 10 years. I also have had a G-glass for 20 years. They all go off road, for work as well as some fun. They are both good trucks, they both can get the job done, but honestly, and you just have to be honest, or why bother writing here, the G is the better vehicle, in virtually every way, other than how much the parts cost. The G is ready to go, right out of the box - no mods required, and, most importantly, the G doesn't break something on a regular basis. The jeeps are good, and they can be really good once you spend a bunch of time modding them, but in my experience, jeeps just tend to break more often than I'd like. With a G, they just don't break hardly ever, especially off road. You hardly ever need to buy parts for a G wagen, so who cares if they cost twice as much - they last four times as long. Top it off with the simple fact that G is much roomier, bigger doors, easier to get in and out of. For example, you can hop in and out with your rifle or shotgun, and a hat or helmet on, and not whack into the vehicle body in 5 places. Plus, the G is much more comfortable to drive, and with the 463 chassis G's, you get full-time 4x4, which is a huge advantage if you actually drive on mixture of gravel, dirt, mud, snow on a regular basis. In the end, what you'll find is that you are just cruising and enjoying yourself in a G-wagen, going where you want when you want, where if I were in one of the jeeps, I'd be working hard to drive the same roads and trails, I can't see out of it as easily, plus when I get in and out of the jeep, I feel like I'm in a sardine can, but then I'm a big guy. So I suppose if you enjoy working hard to drive, being cramped, having to mod the truck before it's really good, and don't mind the regular break-downs, then a cheap jeep is the way to do. Thankfully we have choices, and although both vehicles are great vehicles in their own way, you do get what you pay for.
The Jeep driver still spent less money than he would have on a rich boy carrying Merc, and the Jeep driver Actually Knows how to work on his vehicle onlike the Merc driver. Duh
This is not a soccer mum 150k G-Class. This is a good old Geländewagen which is a fuckton more reliable than the jeep. And it is appreciated by a lot of militaries and offroaders... oh man,i never ever ever thought the following words would come out of my mouth, or more accurately, from my fingertips: the jeep performed a little better.
Let me give some perspective. The G-wagen is used by more than 63 Armies around the word. this includes US Marine corps, the British Army (because its more reliable than a Rover), The German Army, The UN, Canada, and even Russia. Not one of these groups uses a Cherokee. End of debate. The UN just signed a deal to buy them well into 2025. As I remember the design of the cherokee like in the video (which I faithfully owned two of, and totaled both of) died off sometime back in the 90's. The Gwagen has been virtually unchanged for nearly 40 years.
so you think because the g is used by the military it is better...i will take a cherokee and the cost leftover to buy any factory or military G and kick your ass all over the country side while you whine "thats not fair you have upgrades !!" there actually is no "debate" as to which is better. it's all in what you are willing to spend. you suffer from blind fanboy-ism.
Hazi I owned two gwagens. Have owned two range rovers, three Cherokee, two land cruisers, a four runner, a bronco, two Isuzu troopers, a Mitsubishi Monterey, two suburbans, and two suzuki samurais. The G tops them All. I don't speak from fanboy fantasy I speak from experience. Your stock Cherokee couldn't touch the terrain a stock gwagen can handle. Argue all you want, but your wrong.
I didn't say stock dimwit...lol. Read my post again. Plebs like you can't see past the emblem on your hood. The G-can is great out of the box I'm sure. But dollar for dollar, the XJ will always be better. THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON THESE COMPARISONS EXIST. This isn't an argument, you just can't admit I'm right.
Look these vehicles are both capable but the G is definitely the best stock That jeep has so many mods on it that the G has stock so im G all the way. I drive a G and i am apart of the mercedes Galendewagen club of South Africa and nothing can beat these brilliant machines. The coil suspension can handle anything and it is different thicknesses all the way through for driving a loaded vs an unloaded vehicle. The angles on the G are super hard to beat and with 3 differential locks and solid axels, the G is the best 4x4 i have ever seen
Nope. The G was basically stock except the tires, the cherokee had a ton of upgrades like lift kit, lockers front/back etc. If you do the math costwise you will be nearing a G, which I will take over a crappy cherokee in a heartbeat!
google Gunther Holtorf G class around the world trip, he crossed 215 country's within 26 years and drove over 897 thousand kilometers/557370 miles, while the only thing he ever fixed, was the front left brake (easily fixed it on his own). Call me when the Jeep does something similar.
What country is this filmed in? I have a Cherokee myself here in the USA. I am pretty sure that isn't an OEM 4.0 in there. What engine is it? I have a 4.6 stroker with a Sprintex supercharger.
I’ve seen almost every kind of Jeep in JV. Never saw a G wagon even on the dry lake bed. Even on the 247 on the way to JV. I did see a stripped down unimog do well at JV.
Jeep kicked ass. That poor merc at the end couldn't go up the cement barrier as high as the jeep. Merc was too tall. Plus at one point the merc wasn't even fully locked. I hope it has lockers??
Nice off roading but not a good comparison. The most significant visible modification to the Mercedes is tires. The Jeep has completely reworked suspension, drivetrain and tires. So, Jeep needs complete overhaul to compete with the Mercedes.
what tires ya using? I want to make sure I don't get them, those things sure load up and don't seem to clear out much at all. I use wranglers and have used Kelly's, Coopers, and never had them load up like that in the logging roads. that's so dangerous for trying to go down the hills, breaking and turning while descending hills. you guys were for the most part on flat, but even those little hills you guys lost all traction while descending.
Kevin spacey That G-class is more than 20 years old too. You can't pick them up for 2000, but in the state that most Cherokees are in you can get them for 10-15k. A good street car for around 30k.
Glenn Davis Old G classes are pretty much twice as expensive as old Cherokees over here. But that wasn't my point, he thought they were comparing a new G to an old Cherokee, which isn't the case and for here in Europe this is a pretty fair comparison.
Have to give it to the jeep. I mean... Really guys? The benz is awesome but the cost is outrageous. Imagine what you could do to that xj for 50k total cost.. Benz is just too damn expensive, repairs are expensive and supplies limited.. Over designed.. Over engineered.
Daniel Pope that's about what it is yes but in America the cheapest you can get these is 35000 dollars. 14000 would get you a pos one maybe. The Cherokee is pretty great but I'd go with a built tj,wj,or zj
Daniel Pope honestly those things you said is textbook overbuilt. The jeep is plenty and much cheaper. Which means you can spend more on important things
Daniel Pope and the repair costs are still retardedly expensive. It's cool and all but don't buy bit unless you have wads of cash to throw around. And if you did why not just build a jeep.
Daniel Pope if a had loads of cash to build a rig I'd get a grand Cherokee and build that and use a gwagon as another one. They are both great. Heck I even own a Mercedes (83 300d turbo sedan) But the jeep is a much more realistic option. Both are great but the value is with jeep. For the price of a base Mercedes you could get a tricked out jeep. It's more realistic. Also you don't look like a snob in the jeep.
I love my 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport :) I have had it for about 5 years. I got rid of my cat, upgraded the intake (custom done myself), did all the regular maintenaince and it runs like a champ, especially on the dirt. I would love to buy another one but my wife says she wants a grand Cherokee... I guess thats ok if I get her the 5.9 haha. Now I just need to get the Jeep to run on vaporized fuel, it will be done.
yes different revs! Go back and watch the video again, he had the wheels spinning and the motor gunned on the Mercedes most of the time, to get through places the Jeep walks through at low RPM, the guy in the Jeep just liked flying through some areas.
Leonora O'Shea doesn't look too far off from stock, maybe 3 inch lift, air lockers and winch bumper and snorkel, otherwise it looks like the same Cherokee I have at Home
DRugfree1987 considering its an older g wagon, you can get a 2000 g wagon fully loaded for 20k. I'm pretty sure that getting the jeep and modding it with dif lock, suspension, wheels, axels would probably cost the same.
I always chuckle at the lockable "third differential" thing. In it's locked position, it's nothing other than a standard, old school transfer case! By the way, the XJ has the same options, plus 2 wheel drive.
Jimbob Jones why? It has three lockers, it's not a gimmick. One in the front diff, one in the transfer case for 4wheel drive, and one in the rear diff.
@@buckfiden6102 This one has almost all Jeep parts, there is a little bit on the front axle from Mitsubishi Pajero, but it has ARB airlockers. The G is a military 4x4 that will outlast the jeep by decades and can handle FAR more weight, abuse and variable conditions. It also has factory lockers, better engines and is far safer in an accident. This is not a comparison at all, just someone trying to get views.

The Mercedes is not that high , looks better and is not a offroad car . Its more like a SUV . The Cherokee is just cheaper . So if you dont own a shit ton of money stay with the cherokee its just the cheapest offroader . The Mercedes is a dream.
Mercedes G not an offroad car?? I know that a lot of rich spoiled americans drives a G like it is a SUV. But that doesn't change the fact, that it is as much an offroad car as it gets. It was constructed as heavy terrain vehicle for the german military in the 60s and the the basic construction had not changed until 2017. It really has nothing to do with an SUV. But of course Mercedes is happy, that so many idiots buy a G to drive it on roads only.

Truth. the Jeep could go anywhere. The Mercedes could go anywhere, but the Mercedes did it with a much smoother ride.
If I put that much money in my Jeep it would run much smoother than your rich boy carrying Merc.
@Schwanzus Longus stfu the Gwagon wasnt stock and the jeep was a long wheel base which is a smal disadvantage
Schwanzus Longus That G wagon was NOT stock.

But dollar for dollar, the XJ will always be better. THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON THESE COMPARISONS EXIST. This isn't an argument, you just can't admit I'm right.
Look these vehicles are both capable but the G is definitely the best stock
That jeep has so many mods on it that the G has stock so im G all the way.
Yeah the G is also 10x more expensive. In America you can build an XJ that capable for like 5-6 thousand dollars if you know what you're doing.
Cherokees are King. Hurts people's feelings when you out wheel them with something 1/10 the cost of their rigs.
Ee vidi, naši ljudi. :D
xj all the way, the g is nice but overpriced, jeep will do the same things for way less cost,
Awesome video guys!! 😉
Both machines do the job, Cherokeefor 1/10 the price.
this G is 1986.
You have a point, the G wagon will only increase in value over time, provided you don't wreck it first.
Argowal
Just don't take that G wagon fully up that side hill and she will hold her value - hahaha
Nope. The G was basically stock except the tires, the cherokee had a ton of upgrades like lift kit, lockers front/back etc. If you do the math costwise you will be nearing a G, which I will take over a crappy cherokee in a heartbeat!
ButchE30M3S14 I don't think a small lift kit and tires costs over 90,000.
I have same style color and year. 1998 xj. They are nice. Even a snorkel almost thought you stole my jeep.. Lol
google Gunther Holtorf G class around the world trip, he crossed 215 country's within 26 years and drove over 897 thousand kilometers/557370 miles, while the only thing he ever fixed, was the front left brake (easily fixed it on his own). Call me when the Jeep does something similar.
Nice Video
Thanks, you can check out our website with off road videos and photos

no real challenge for either vehicle on this course...
I we'll choose the Cherokee..
What country is this filmed in? I have a Cherokee myself here in the USA. I am pretty sure that isn't an OEM 4.0 in there. What engine is it? I have a 4.6 stroker with a Sprintex supercharger.
I love the Jeep we have a new(ish) one and I`m going to buy an old one as well.
Cherokee is beautiful. G-class freak. Both go well.
Looks like the terrain local farmers and hunters deal with every spring and fall in their ford chevy n dodge trucks.
Ford = fail, except for the old old Fords like the Mach 1 and so on, but almost all 90's and after fords such dick.
I’ve seen almost every kind of Jeep in JV. Never saw a G wagon even on the dry lake bed. Even on the 247 on the way to JV. I did see a stripped down unimog do well at JV.
great trip brother! wish i could join that area looks fun!
... in a galaxy far, far away... this is Europe, South Eastern Europe, Serbia, Belgrade City/County :) :) :)
@@TopDjir Iv been there many times! I have good friends there!
man this trail looks fun I'd love to take my ZR2 on this
Fun to watch fun in the mud - XJ's never die - they just get lifted HIGHER!
Jeep everyday, all day
cheap junk
Jeep kicked ass. That poor merc at the end couldn't go up the cement barrier as high as the jeep. Merc was too tall. Plus at one point the merc wasn't even fully locked. I hope it has lockers??
Dylan every single g has lockers
Hey does that Cherokee have the snorkle top on backwards for a purpose?
Nice off roading but not a good comparison. The most significant visible modification to the Mercedes is tires. The Jeep has completely reworked suspension, drivetrain and tires. So, Jeep needs complete overhaul to compete with the Mercedes.
thanks for sharing your speculation. can you point out which parts of the drive train are "completely reworked"? i couldn't see it in the video
The axles and driveshaft are visible in the video. Sorry, but they aren't factory.
yeah, they are visibly factory axles... available on every cherokee. you know nothing of which you speak lol.
Nope, XJ have a stock axels, i only sea a lift kit maybe a cheap auto lockers and wheels, also winch and snorkel don't work for the test both cars
Yes and the Jeep owner still spent less than he would have on a rich boy carrying Merc.
what tires ya using? I want to make sure I don't get them, those things sure load up and don't seem to clear out much at all. I use wranglers and have used Kelly's, Coopers, and never had them load up like that in the logging roads. that's so dangerous for trying to go down the hills, breaking and turning while descending hills. you guys were for the most part on flat, but even those little hills you guys lost all traction while descending.
That look like a good time. Finish the day with a full belly and a new friend.
Nice job with both vehicles. The Cherokee is cheaper to maintain. What lift does the Cherokee have and what size tires is it running?
What's the price of the Jeep even after all the aftermarket parts compare to the Mercedes ?
crash 13 mod cherokee like this $6000dlls , stock $1700dlls
They are both badass!
Love the 80's G classes
Why does the jeep still have sway bars installed? You dont need lockers for this. its just mud. This is not a true test.
.olllllllo. Super jeep.
G classe the king...G its unique. ....😍😍😍
Kevin spacey That G-class is more than 20 years old too. You can't pick them up for 2000, but in the state that most Cherokees are in you can get them for 10-15k. A good street car for around 30k.
here in the states you can pick up Cherokee's all day long for under 2 grand in pretty fair shape.
Glenn Davis Old G classes are pretty much twice as expensive as old Cherokees over here. But that wasn't my point, he thought they were comparing a new G to an old Cherokee, which isn't the case and for here in Europe this is a pretty fair comparison.
Yes they are in 2" of sleet or snow to get you quickly back home before you get stuck or worse absolutely!🤣🤣🤣 😉
Have to give it to the jeep. I mean... Really guys? The benz is awesome but the cost is outrageous. Imagine what you could do to that xj for 50k total cost.. Benz is just too damn expensive, repairs are expensive and supplies limited.. Over designed.. Over engineered.
Tierhog that xj is 10k tops. great value
Heck I even own a Mercedes (83 300d turbo sedan)
But the jeep is a much more realistic option. Both are great but the value is with jeep. For the price of a base Mercedes you could get a tricked out jeep. It's more realistic.
Also you don't look like a snob in the jeep.
Why do not you lower your tire pressure?
Nice driving skills
Classe G 👌🏼
I love my 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport :) I have had it for about 5 years.
I got rid of my cat, upgraded the intake (custom done myself), did all the regular maintenaince and it runs like a champ, especially on the dirt. I would love to buy another one but my wife says she wants a grand Cherokee... I guess thats ok if I get her the 5.9 haha. Now I just need to get the Jeep to run on vaporized fuel, it will be done.
i’m interested in that as well how is it possible i’ve heard about kits online but i’m not sure if it’s legit
Jeep Cherokee good 💪👍👍👍👍
These guys know how to drive!
g is love g is life
The G costs around 300000 ZAR which is 20 000 USD more or less
Think we all know which is best
if price is a factor then there is an obvious winner, if not both SUVs are fairly well matched.
Anyone know what front bumper is on that Cherokee?? It's exactly what I'm looking for.
Both very capable but the Mercedes did it with fewer revs.
The Mercedes has a different price tag too!
realbhopwood It seems like they revved to the same level.
yes different revs! Go back and watch the video again, he had the wheels spinning and the motor gunned on the Mercedes most of the time, to get through places the Jeep walks through at low RPM, the guy in the Jeep just liked flying through some areas.
Just got my first g500 now I'm watching videos of it how crazy
Congratulations!
Привет Друзья! Очень понравилось.
Bravo !
The video speaks about the mechanical and you are talking about the cost
Красавцы 👍
хорошее видео
The mercedes may be standard, but the jeep is ramped up.
Leonora O'Shea doesn't look too far off from stock, maybe 3 inch lift, air lockers and winch bumper and snorkel, otherwise it looks like the same Cherokee I have at Home
Cherokee 2.5" lift kit and ARB diff lock
and still cost a 1/4 of what the Mercedes does.
DRugfree1987 and much better
DRugfree1987 considering its an older g wagon, you can get a 2000 g wagon fully loaded for 20k. I'm pretty sure that getting the jeep and modding it with dif lock, suspension, wheels, axels would probably cost the same.
very good drivers. not difficult terrain to handle on the other side
I would hope the benz has lockers for the price they get for it
it does have 3
I always chuckle at the lockable "third differential" thing.
Is it the G300 ?
take the G wagon, sell it... buy more Jeeps
Vengeance Man jeeps are garbage
What is that piece attached to the backhatch of the Jeep called? I would definitely want one on mine!
are you talking about the airfoil?
Leija : Graphics Designer It's called a whiper. If you look very carefull you see 2 of them on the front
Leija : Graphics Designer You are right, it is a wiper. My keyboard is dyslectic, but no need for bad language.
Rvgerwen went 0-100 real quicm
You want a windshield wiper?
красавцы!!!
There both cool. But the jeep is more like a little fourwheeler offroad. The benz is more like a beast.
What size lift and tires
Does the jeep have lockers? Great video.that jeep xj looks exactly as mine.
XJ have ARB front and rear Airlockers :)
@@TopDjir NICE. Did you have to install bigger axles?
@@buckfiden6102 This one has almost all Jeep parts, there is a little bit on the front axle from Mitsubishi Pajero, but it has ARB airlockers.
Attractive rides are collected here ua-cam.com/video/ejd705mhIdA/v-deo.html
Many XJs have Nissan differentials, such as this ua-cam.com/video/IBbL8R9TEc8/v-deo.html
Where did you get the XJ taillight guards?
home made :)
Cool, never saw a G in a 2 door-- Jeep cost 10 grand to build and G cost 100 grand to buy--wow, that old XJ is sure impressive
The G is a military 4x4 that will outlast the jeep by decades and can handle FAR more weight, abuse and variable conditions. It also has factory lockers, better engines and is far safer in an accident. This is not a comparison at all, just someone trying to get views.
"will outlast...by decades" any proof of that, or is that just you being a fanboy?
@@hal2655 google Gunther Holtorf G class around the world trip, he crossed 215 country's within 26 years and drove over 897 thousand kilometers/557370 miles, while the only thing he ever fixed, was the front left brake. Call me when the Jeep does something similar.
Me gusta Mercedes clase g
what tire size on the mercedes?
owned both. try compare a jeep with road legal tires to the G in terrain . owned 2 G`s. my G is a keeper and i love it to death
I think both drivers were excellent and experienced. Very difficult to choose a better suv

Merci, nous avons beaucoup de tels manèges sur notre chaîne youtube ua-cam.com/users/gosha969 et sur notre site Web top-djir.com/
