Williams had 55 songs that reached the Top 10....an unbelievable achievement for someone who died at the age of 29. 80 years later, his music still resonates his tragic life.

Hank is the king of country music. I don't think I've ever heard a song of his I didn't like.

Hank was born with spina bifita and was in pain from day one of his
sadly short life . Pain can make you old before your time and it surely
matured Hank beyond his years. Few people probably had more reason
to lean on the alcohol and morphine that both sustained him and eventually
killied him . He was an old soul in a young man's body and what he blessed
the world with puts us all in his eternal debt .

My Dad died when I was 10 and he LOVED Hank Williams. I remember listening to his records when I was young. Now I have all of his records, about 20 of them with all the reaeases and such, and I still listen to them. IMO, the best song writer of the 20th Century. By the way, The Carter Family (from Smith County VA) and Jimmy Rogers created the "sound". I am "kin" to the Carter Family (my last name's Carter), and I love them as well They are the "First Family of Country Music". Here's a quick link.... Check them out. It's even older than this. Johnny Cash married June Carter... Thanks, it's great to see people loving Hank, he's an American icon.... And, The Carter Family is old timey. Unlike what you may have heard. REALLY raw...

The Carter Family and a few of their contemporaries laid the groundwork that country music grew from. So many great songs and artists owe a big debt to them.

Another home run Harri. Linda Ronstadt actually turned me on to a lot of Hank. She did a great cover of this song. I think there are many covers by many artists of this song out there. Everybody wanted to be Hank. George Jones started off his career trying to sound like him, as did everybody.

Hank was in a lot of ways able to sing the way he did because his life was full of pain and misery. His steel guitarist was
Don Helms one of the all time greats on the steel. Sam Pruett is the guy on the electric guitar. This was recorded in 1951
about 2 years or so before Hank died.

I remember hearing Hank Williams Sr when i was a kid. He had such great talent. And from what i understand Hank never got a lot of what his producers and record companys made.

He was about 25 when he wrote this as a test to see if he was a really a song write for a skeptical producer. The guitar invented country music. Hank was born in 1923 and the Grand Old Opre began on radio in 1926 from Nashville with a lot of country music, blue grass, folk music etc.

That story about him writing the song on the spot for the producer is a myth...never happened. They stuck in the old movie, "Your Cheating Heart", and that's how the story got started. A lot of that movie was fiction. Also, the Opry starting on radio in 1925.

That was a treat. I started trying to sing Hanks songs (seriously) before puberty. At 71 now that was a while ago. I saw his son when I was a kid of 14 in my home towns city auditorium in 1966. It was one of those package tours (albeit a small one). Lorretta Lynn , The Wilburn Brothers, and Hank Jr. He was doin Sr's music and wearing out a banjo. That was some years before the fall in Montana and the birth of the outlaw country Bosephus ( a nickname his dad gave him as a cub). Harri, sittin here and watchin you shut your eyes and drift away took me right along with you. When I was young (and wild) I can't tell you the number of times that after the whiskey would flow for a while the guitars would come out and we'd wail at the moon. From Hank, to Merle and all in btween. Thank for the memories mate.

This is my clear favourite Hank Williams song, and one of my very favourite country songs ever .. The melody is so beautiful, the very relatable lyrics are heartbreakingly painful, and Hank's voice is just perfect for it .. Amazing songwriter, and like so many other talented artists, gone too soon.

Without Audrey there could never have been a Hank ~ they had a classic love/hate relationship ~ they loved each other but couldn't be together without fighting ~ a large part of it~ Audrey wanted to be a performer & would pressure him into including her in his stage shows ~ some of the biggest venues in country music would not book him,if he intended to let her perform

When I was growing up, we would turn off the TV and Papa would get out his guitar and we would listen to him and we would sing. This was one of the songs that I loved to hear him sing. Thank you for bringing back those memories. When he died, I was not able to attend the funeral because of an abusive husband. Papa is the one who raised me and we were extremely close. RIP Papa Bear McKinney 😢. I will always love you ❤️

Hank would've turned 100 last September.
Crazy to think that it's possible that he could've still been alive today. Or even in my lifetime. I can't imagine, and we'll never know, the amount of great songs we missed out on by his life ending so soon.

I always loved the version of this song done by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. It’s one of my favorites from Linda’s breakthrough album. In an interview she told the story of how her older sister loved Hank Williams and would sing this song as they washed the dishes after dinner. Great choice and reaction. Thanks Harri and Uncle Phil. 🌺✌️

Harri, There are no words to describe the words hank penned down all those years ago.
So far, you're the only reaction channel to consistently listen to the great Hank Williams.
I must recommend a song of Hanks, titled "Men With Broken Hearts," recorded just after a bad divorce, and just a year before his death in 1953.
Thanks for covering this great American poet so openly.

He told the story how he and his wife went to that producer who was more interested in her than him. He told Hank if he was such a good writer write a dong about and man seeing a lost love for the first time. He then took Mrs Williams across the street for lunch. About an hour later he comes back and there sat Hank with his cowboy boots on top of this dudes desk and when he saw him Hank started singing this song. The rest is history

There's a rare raw video of him performing this song as a duet with Anita Carter on the Kate Smith show in 1952. About 8 months before he passed.
Anita Carter is June Carter Cash's sister. June even introduces them. This was before Johnny Cash ever met June.
