I’m impressed how far you’ve come in your farming ability & personal growth. You’ve been such a positive in my life at this trying time in history. Thank you Morgan.💕
I just bought a homestead, and one of my future plans is to get Scottish Highlands to put in the 6 acres forest/pasture area. But first need to save up for everything, now watching you enjoying them cannot wait. Greetings from Croatian hills
The joy of the cattle is that I love them all, they're a family unit and all have their own personalities...but BABY B!! 🥺😭 She, very easily, rushed her way to my very favorite of your cows, in a ranking that didn't exist before! SO pleased to see the progress with her and all the other cows too!!
If you're ever curious about birds or whether you're hearing a bird or not, the Merlin app is really cool! It has a sound ID feature. It's not perfect, but it's usually pretty reliable.
Lol, that reminds me of a college crush of mine. If I was my normal level of attentive - I was SUPER shy back then, so I was by *no* means overdoing it - he’d ignore me. But if I didn’t pay any attention to him, he’d come to me. Oyyyyy, I dodged a MAJOR b*ll*t with that one!
I remember when Baby B was born, and I think you weren't expecting another baby calf so it was a happy surprise. I was impressed with how docile she was in the very beginning, but then something changed, looks like it might change back which is a good thing. Certainly miss Rosie the weird chicken, she was such a good mama always sneaking off where she could brood in private, and her daughter was a cutie too. Thanks for the update Morgan, always good to see what you are up to.🐂🐓🦆👍💕
@@bkm2797Morgan went to a creator’s convention in California. He did a couple of off-farm videos during that time. Between his absence where he kept Abby fence with Toby and the. Her accident is also what caused Baby B to not be as receptive to playing with Abby. It made me sad.
Morgan, Scottish Highland cow calves are known to love their chins and Brisket area of the neck scratched. It gives them the equivalent feeling that a cat gets through stroking. Try it, then watch their tongues stick out like a snake trying to sample the air.
I still remember how after Beatrice was born, she was friendly to you. Then you took a trip away from the farm, and when you came back she was afraid of you.
Love this. I had a turkey this week who previously wanted nothing to do with me actually let me pet her.. then she chased me down for more pets. Strange how victorious it feels.. looks like a victory with Baby Bea! 👶🐮
I remember when Baby Bea was born and she lets you pet her. As I recall, that changed because you went away for a week to a gathering of UA-cam content creators. When you returned, she didn't seem to remember you.
I remember how she changed and became afraid of him after he got back. Did she not remember him or did the farm sitter do something to cause her to fear humans?
When growing up in Vermont a couple of miles down the road from Gold Shaw farm, daily chores was just a natural everyday activity like milking cows, haying the fields, gardening, and taking care of the chickens and pigs...
Just a little suggestion hope it will help Try using your hand to touch/give scratches the cattle which you want to be comfortable with cause it will make them comfortable around you and less threatening. Love from India 🙏
Thank you for bringing up the head thing :) they prefer usually to start around the neck.. At least mine do.. Texas Longhorns here... Be careful in that zone behind the hip standing that far apart from the cow is right in that zone of a hearty kick ..I see no warnings or red flags from your cattle though.. It's been fun watching your journey!.. Thank you always for sharing.. Could your dear sweet wife show another video of how she preps her garden for spring? Stay warm!
With horses, you approach at the shoulder and use your fingers to give a minute or so of gentle scratching and massage on their neck. Then you can work in either direction with the brush. Also, you can get grooming gloves that let you brush with your hands. The gloves have little nubs on them that the animals (dogs, cats, horses) seem to enjoy.
Ohhhh Gold Shaw nice seeing what yr up to😅 you always make me giggle. You sir gotta show dominance, vyr there pack leader!! Like my cat she sees the brush thats it, but if i come at her assertive with out her seeing the brush then she's fine. Maybe putting it in there faces or chasing them with it they don't like it, they also know what it is. Keep it in your pocket till yr near them then try then to brush.
What an enjoyable video! I love the relationship you are building with your animals and am excited to do the same when we are ready for cattle. We don't have good enough fencing yet, but hopefully by next spring! 🤞
As someone with long hair, not a cow though lol, start brushing at the ends and make your way to the roots GENTLY. If you start at the roots, the excess hair can create tangling and it can be a great tug that makes it not fun for the cattle. If you're too forceful that could also likely spook them, the best method it to treat the brush as if it's a tool for a massage, the animals will likely appreciate the experience to feel better than a chase that likely spooks them.
It’s interesting having seen the journey for his original cattle in terms of them, being virtually feral when he got them to the point where he can put it around them and they have a working relationship with him. Also with Audrey being w Hopefully the new cows will realise this is the way the HEARD runs and how the farm eights start being more cooperative, though it will be fun and games with initially they get out in the fields.
Another slight adjustment might be to lengthen the pole of the brush. You wouldn’t be so close these beautiful friends. As Baby B and others are more comfortable, you would shorten the length of the pole.🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Congratulations on brushing Baby B...I know it must feel like a super success! I would be curious to see if Abby Dog would become friends with her again, as she's in a smaller space right now. Tip: if your health insurance covers other vaccines, it is likely to cover a rabies vaccine, especially as it's work-related, since you may run into rabid raccoons, etc. in the course of your work. It's a 3-shot, 5-week series for humans and immunity can last quite a while. I got mine originally in 2008 so I could help on a bat project where we trapped bats for a genetic study and I get my titers checked every two years--it always makes me smile when I get a letter in the mail from the doctor and it says that I am immune! I just now had to get a booster last year.
Hey Morgan - do you have a camera setup that auto-focuses on your face? I enjoy the movement in some of your shots and i'm wondering how you're doing it!
Since most of them already know and are used to the brushes from the happy cow mobile you might be able to use one of them on a shop broom to help the more skiddish ones get used to being brushed, then they'll associate you with the good scratch. Only downside is they might then think it's okay to brush against you yourself even when you don't have the comb.
Good luck. I know from experience it's nearly impossible to get a semi wild calf to be chill around you! But I'm sure you will make progress as you are so patient and never give up
I'm wondering if maybe an equigroomer might work better on the cows, especially if they have mats. Might be painful using an undercoat rake on them (talk to Vanessa about that - maybe she'll come and groom your cows in addition to Toby Dog and Abby Dog 😂. God knows she's groomed ducks, pigs, rats, cows would make a nifty addition to her channel)
