I had a cat like this once. A total sweetheart until another kitty came around or the scent of another kitty. Then she was literally out for blood, she would go insane.
I don't think this is animal abuse. It's very common for cats to behave this way, even laid back ones. It can be perplexing to an owner. The owner was not yelling at or hitting the cat for her behavior, she was simply curious about it. Beautiful cat by the way.
Well, you surely saw that the owner purposely shoved the camera for quite a long time into the face of the cat. Letting it hit the camera, hiss, growl, curl up into a little ball into a corner etc. That's not curiosity, she wanted it to get more aggressive.
Also I disagree with this behavior being "common". My 2 cats never reacted this way, when I come home with unknown scents of cats, dogs, horses or whatever. I take care of plenty of different cats when the owner go into holidays, train dogs, took care of horses in the past (also ferrets, livestock etc.). I have my cats 8 years, they were always simply curious. Nothing more. Same goes to all the cats I take care of...they never react badly to other scents I bring into their territory.

Well, it`s not positive or "normal" if cats fight each other all the time. It`s very stressful life for cats, especially if they`re indoor cats & can`t escape that situation. Either they are not fixed, don`t have enough space or simply hate each other. Either way, I wouldn`t force them to life together. Except they`re outdoor cats and can go where they want any time.
No, I think the owner did that camera thing on purpose. There was no need to get it so close, that it would hit the camera.
Also, I wasn`t only talking about my cats, all the cats I take & took care of never reacted that way either. (which would be around 25-30 cats)

Two days later she was very loving and grateful to be home. Kept an eye out (pun) but she stayed loving 5 years now.
