I hunted a Military Reservation for many years and liked to hunt swamps. One in particular had a Beaver Dam that I walked along, even had to step over a Cottonmouth. This lead to a tiny strip of somewhat drier ground. There was Big Deer sign everywhere. I used a climber and had some good Bucks that came off of that spit of land. Even enjoyed Wood Ducks feeding on acorns in the nearby shallow water. It was some kind of special place that I had all to myself. Thanks for sharing your insights into how you hunt. Really enjoyed this.
I love this podcast, even as a guy that lives in the Midwest. I was shocked to see Charlie on here, he is a guy that is known about in parts of Wisconsin. His results are so outside of normal its crazy, props to the Southern Outdoorsman for talking to him and finding him. This guy is a legitimate badass for how he accomplishes what he does and how he is doing it. He is an extremely smart guy
When he said it doesn't matter what gear you have it matters about your killer instinct that rang so true to me. I had two opportunities to shoot a six point buck on the ground last week while scouting. Gotta be ready to go at all times!
A good question to start off any conversation should be what’s the average size buck harvested in the county your hunting. Bobby Worthington Dicusses this in Final Quest. Expectations because where I hunt and I’m sure many others will in North East Ga would never see anything like he has on his back wall. Maybe a unicorn but anything on his wall would be a new record in my county. Not taking anything away for this guy and I listened to what he had to say but just a reminder don’t get discouraged by having the the wrong expectations. If you get excited about a mature 6 pointer mount that deer and be proud of yourself
I am the guy in the podcast…Gotta hunt what the land provides, no question about it. I would say the average buck killed in my area is a fork or 6 point, that’s the bulk of what hunters tag out on. The percentage of hunters that fill a buck tag at all in my area hovers around 40%
My area of north Florida, anything approaching 100 inches with decent mass is a trophy. Heck, I consider any buck over 3 1/2 to be a trophy, I have a big cow horn skull hanging in my man cave that is the oldest buck I have seen.

Wetlands are whitetail safety areas.. they can easily hear any oncoming threat, and have excellent cover ..dry areas on islands & edges & barrens with moss, mud, juniper or cedar, nearby decidious..oooh..pain to transit but bucks LOVE the edges & barriers that have "effort" barriers..mixed areas ARE BEST.. *I FOLLOW MOST MATURE BUCKS IN SOFT FLOOR AREAS..LOTS OF MUD, OPEN VS TIGHT SINGLETRACK TRAILS! LOVE TAMARACK/LARCH..YELLOW TO FIRE AS THEY CHANGE COLOR & DROP NEEDLES!😂
I’d like to hear yall talk to John Eberhart about NOT paying a bit of attention to the wind…dudes scent control regimen is insane but it would be an interesting conversation…
It's all in what state how long rifle season is a longer bow keeps deer less spooked I'm in upstate new York with a seven week gun season this year not many big bucks taken because of heavy hunting no antler restrictions depends on feed and most guys now sit in shooting shacks most guys ar baiting deer which sucks
My neighbor moved his stand right at my fence line which is about 30 yards from where we were feeding. We chose that spot to feed for many reasons, including it being far from his hunting spot. That has obviously changed and activity on the game cam is non existent. I hate to move everything during the season but feel I have no choice. Thoughts?
Fence line hunters on private land is terrible around here. I’m battling with several hunters hunting on the line near my plots. It makes for lots of anxiety. One of the hunters told me not to crowd him. I told him I would build a stand anywhere I want but haven’t cause I knew he was hunting there. So I moved a stand near his stand. He don’t own the land just got permission. You can’t back down!
@Grizzlife that sucks man and is tough. I hunt a private spot but it's 25 acres that's surrounded by other 20-40 acre plots. We had our feed spot for over 4 years now cause we wanted to be far away from neighbors hunting spot. Wouldn't be as big of a deal if he had moved it during the off season instead of mid season.
@@Steve-ev6vx his stand is like a mini house sitting in the open 30 yards from my feeder. Game cam activity went to nearly nothing after he put it there.

The comparison to a competitive fisherman is spot on. This guy is a gem. Protect him! Gear is secondary, I could " like " every bullet point he hit!
First flat land buck i seen was a swamp buck in n.c where no one would go ... he is so right

They logged a bunch of woods I use to hunt, just wrote off those spots and it's been a couple of years. I'll have to go back and check those spots out
Clear cuts/select cuts are awesome. Can be hard to hunt depending on layout and such but once you can get in there, no telling what you might see.
It’s to late! The best time to hunt clear cuts is rite when the skidders leave for about next 3-4 yrs then it goes down hill
@ no way man…when that fresh growth starts coming up it’s a great time to get in there. It gets thick very fast, though for sure.

Don't look at the horn size , think age and adjust accordingly and you might find a little bit bigger deer for your area

I wouldn't even worry about it. You are hunting the same deer anyway, unless you have thousands of acres..
Thats hunter harassment. Put a stand up over your feed. Just say you were there first and he got all up in yer shit. Call dnr.

Deer love bedding in Oxbows along rivers and creeks in northern Minnesota where the wolves are at.
Killed my first public land deer in a swamp in 2022 an it produces deer for me and my brother everyone avoids it
