John likened these compulsories to figures in skating - but as a former skater, I can attest that these routines seem so much more relevant. Whereas I always felt that compulsory figures took up valuable training time with no reward, compulsory gymnastics are a much more faithful distillation of the acrobatic elements, leaps, and transitions. It really rewards athletes for attention to detail and perfect technique...I miss compulsory gymnastics!
Pause at 2:57 and I think that's why Zelepukina got nailed. I feel like most people did it that way, (including Lilia) but lesser known gymnasts got pasted for it. Lilia's back straddle to handstand didn't really lock in, either so I'm not that mad about her score.
Will someone please tell me that NBC finally got John Tesh some psychological counseling for his fear of floor music being played simultaneously with beam routines? I lost the ability to count how many times he rather neurotically mentions it.
@LGailey That's true it rewards for attention to detail but we all know every gymnast who competed here was capable of putting the compulsory routines together behind closed doors. It really was a waste of practice time when athletes should have been focusing on their optional pieces.
@mzmissa So I guess in that way - taking valuable practice time away from the good stuff - it WAS like figures! I remember being so thrilled that figures were no longer required. Nothing quite like repeatedly skating around in circles in a freezing cold rink at 5 am every day. Ugh.

Zelepukina was severely underscored! And so was Lilia!!!!! Romania was so overscored on bars.

All about lack of name.

she was one of my ALL-TIME-FAVORITES and to me she was "THE PRETTIES OF THEM ALL"
