    I’ve always felt the Duke of Norfolk to be a half-cursed title when you look at how many of them met sticky ends.
    And don’t mess with our emotions like that, Mrs. Ridgway!! 😭😭 I’d adore it if you kept this up after the new year, and I know I’m not alone in that feeling! I have a certain Pavlovian response when it comes to your videos now! I went from not knowing about the channel to it being as close to appointment television as anything these days, and that just doesn’t happen often. Keep up the wonderful work!

    Claire, if it helps, I've found that covering paperbacks with clear contact paper will help preserve the covers and the pages without hiding them. I don't know if schoolchildren in your part of the world cover their textbooks with newspaper or paper bags (when I was in school in the 1980s and 90s in the USA we did that); it's a similar concept. Even if the cover is bent or wrinkled, the contact paper smooths it out wonderfully, and if the corners of the pages are curled that will help straighten them out. I learned that trick when I worked at the school library's Book Repair Division at Eastern New Mexico University in 1994, and since then I do it to all my favorite books (hardcover as well as paperpack) because it extends their life by decades.

      Yes, a great idea to cover the books the way you describe Wendy. 📚 👍 I've always done that too, and always helped my son to cover his school Text books that way. Also when he was in university he covered his books, as they were so very expensive.

    He was a very interesting man, considered the father of English heraldry and genealogy. He was genuinely fond of his wives and seems to have been very depressed after their deaths. He was one of those commissioners appointed to investigate Mary Stuart's involvement in her husband's death and was very shocked at the evidence he found. There's an excellent biography of Thomas by Neville Williams called A Tudor Tragedy. It's the only work on his life as far as I know.

    "Lots of Thomas Howards" Ha! That is an understatement. I have a heck of a time keeping them all straight. I look them up, constantly. I am finally starting to get a grasp on which ones were which during which time frames.

    Left out an interesting trivia item - Elizabeth I visited the tower the night before his execution to make sure that all was prepared, possibly because this was the first tower execution in her reign.

    Executions of the nobility was have been a lively business. No matter how high a person’s office or well connected they were to the monarchy, the could in a brief time fall out of favor and lose their life. Better to be a commoner living on a farm far from the center of power.

    • @leanie9660
      @leanie9660 5 років тому +8

      The idea was that the executioner would be more careful of his paying clients.....but it does sound ridiculous. I guess that if you pay for it yourself, your king/accuser/condemner would be "less responsible" for your death.

    Queen Elizabeth seemed to realize the heavy burden of having someone executed. In more than one she had delayed and wrestled with going forward on the executions. Henry on the other hand, I would like to think he really examined going forward with many executions, it seems he didn’t in his later years.
