  • Removing cowl or cowling on a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Removing wiper arms and inspecting drain and cowling tray. Water leaking on passenger floor board after a heavy rain which usually means the drain system under the cowling is plugged or there is a seal issue. Our very first video to posted.

Thank you. This was my very first UA-cam video as I was still learning how to format the video. Thank you for watching.

Great video on this. I too have removed the cowl on my TJ and cleaned out debris from where I could see but couldn’t access a vacuum down the drain. I was very impressed with the funnel application. Ingenuity at its finest! Long story short my problem with water in the floorboards (The water is in the passenger side but mainly the drivers side) has improved but still exist and afterwards after I go back into it again I hope it will solve the problem. Also I wondered about using Lithium Grease on my wiper arm connections at all the pivot points which I will do. This is by far the best video on this from the funnel to the bore cam. Thank you! John from East Tennessee.

I appreciate your feedback. This was my first video so it wasn’t as picture perfect as I would have liked. I own 3 Jeeps and owned 2 previously. This was on my daughters 1998 TJ. I wish I had made videos a lot earlier in life to capture some of my challenges, failures and successes. Thank you again.
I personally don’t know what is the preferred lubricant for the pivot points and will try lithium grease as well. I just used WD40 at the time. Something else I found out, there were some areas around the inside of the cowl with what appeared to be old silicone or sealant that I had to trim, clean and reapply because water was slowly seeping through around a corner joint. So as that area filled up due to the blocked drain, some water seeped through. Also my Driver’s side right top door seal also had deformed a little over time allowing a small gap. I am always learning and just a Jeep Enthusiast. Enjoy your ride!

i just shoot the hose down my cowl drain and that usually clears it right out. It took me a decade but I finally figured out that the leak in my passenger side footwell was caused by two things. Pre2000 TJ's didn't have the rubber hook tube that allowed water to drain from the evap out the firewall so water would shoot back driving on the highway. The other cause was during any heavy rain the door seal at the bottom would cause water to leak inside. So glad when I finally fixed not having a puddle in my footwell.

I probably should do a video on how to add a tube. Thank you for visiting.

Good info on the vid.. I recently bought a 2001 TJ. It's a weekend Jeep so now it usually sits in the garage. Recently I left it outside and a very heavy thunderstorm moved in and it was pouring. I happen to look at the Jeep outside the garage door and water was coming down the center of it right in the trans/Clutch area. I never seen anything like it. Usually on a car the water just runs around the outside to the ground. Now I see where that water comes from... here is my problem, I'm not sure if you drive a 5 speed but mine is. I have had twice happened when I first bought it when it would sit outside for a few weeks without being used the clutch would not engage/ I could not get it in gear.. I had to get the clutched replaced thinking it was a bad clutch.... The mechanic said I had plenty of clutch life left in it but it was all Rusty ? and I'm in Fl.... I think that drain water in my Jeep is falling right on top of my clutch housing and getting in it.. ?? why .. ? because it happened to me again with a brand new clutch,,,, it seems if I leave it outside for a few weeks and don't drive it during the summer months when it rains heavy this happens. I had to manually jam it in reverse while a friend was pushing me and it feed up.
Have you ever heard of this ?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I have not heard of this. I own a 1998 TJ and a 2000 TJ. I have both on hand. I also have friends that own them and I will follow up and get more information since both of mine are automatics. If you have time, I am on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Each of these Apps allow you to send direct messages and pictures (but UA-cam does not). Send me a pick of where the water is entering. The grill above the cowling allows water to flow through but then to drain in the center as I show in the video. The transmission area is exposed to the elements as well and Jeeps go through moderate water pools, so I am hesitant to think the water is impacting it but do not want to discount it as a possibility. My first thought is understanding the clutch assembly and performance. Weather should not impact it. Thank you for sharing.

@@JohnsJeepGarage Hey, thanks for the response I found something yesterday while I was under the rig I had my wife pour a jug of water on the center Intake . It just splashed all over the place will I was under the Jeep. Seems there is a diverter that comes on these that mine does not have. It channels the water down the side of the Bellhousing. This some digging but they are discontinued so I found a used one on ebay... still doesn't thin it's right that the clutch would stick form some water getting on it ..... but will see... I will look you up on facebook and show you a photo of this.

Thank you for the information. Thank you for sharing and I have this posted in the comments for this video. I now want to see if this diverter exits different on different TJ's. What I have on mine is the "Funnel" type drain from the hood cowling drain which travels down the back of the firewall. Another name for this is the Cowl Drain Tube. I appreciate you sharing this information.
