I spat my tea out when you said “tiny tiny suit!!” 🤣🤣🤣
😆
And tiny tiny shoes.
Me too.....only it was my coffee ☕!!
I laughed
😂😂😂 I let out a huge smirk
I once, as a late teen, was camping outside Harlech with a friend called Andy... I went to walk into town because the campsite wasn't too far out. I remember walking down the hill and seeing the castle slowly start to appear out of the morning fog, and just as the fog lifted, a choir that was practicing inside the castle started singing "Men of Harlech" - I stood in the middle of the road, frozen, and started to sob - it was arguably the most spiritual moment I have ever had in my life.
Wow, excellent recount of your profound experience!
@@coolwater55 it was pretty intense... a long time ago now - but I remember it to the point where I can still feel the slope of the road under my feet.
@@lazzymclandrover4447 Really amazing. I love that for you! I have a few distant memories of really poignant moments, but yours is exceptional.
it’s fascinating to feel so strong when it happened so long ago, I often wish some one would explain this? You were very lucky to here the choir at that time
Isn't that lovely. Thank you for sharing
Niel you've kept me sane this past three years
Totally agree Martin! It's the same here in NZ with our PM. Without people like Neil telling us how it is - it would be darker. Kia Kaha.
I am so glad that I now know I am not the only one who feels the same way 😄
Neil, actually.

'' Peak bonkers" brilliant Neil . Though I do suspect 'they' have further to climb up the lunacy ladder yet.
When I first saw Neil on tv some years ago when he was on an archaeological dig, and was a virtual unknown in my country of New Zealand, I noted he was rather quiet. Nevertheless, I took, from his countenance, that he appeared always to be deeply contemplative - that he held within him some profound stuff - to the point that he unsettled me.
By crikey, my instincts were right!
Sir Oliver as an ex military man and county Tyrone ex pat in the prime of life I enjoyed listening to you on the tell lie vision.
I have followed you more so during these tyrannical times we find ourselves in. You are a voice of truth and have a skill of relating.

Love how you say ‘coo’. Yep, you are keeping me sane. We will be ok. We will prevail. I just feel sad to be honest. We live in Portugal where many are still weighted down by the leftovers of communism (1974 was the year in which a socialist government overturned Salazar). So, still there is a strong undertone of ‘follow the leader’. So, not surprisingly Portugal is one of the most submissive countries in terms of these past few years. Me and my boys will always be critical thinkers and I believe we can all get through this by using common sense! Mr Oliver, keep doing what you do. You inspire me to do what my instinct tells me. ❤️👍🇵🇹🇬🇧👋 thanks.
I just want to point out that if there had been any “critical thinking” those European boys would never had been there defending an imperialistic supply station in the middle of Zulu land in the first place. They where there because they were told to! All wars rely on obeying orders and not one’s own critical thinking. As long as that goes on there will not be peace in the world. We are duped to believe that if we vote for a particular party (ideology) we can make a better world. But in reality it is still brute force that wins the day in this world. No matter who you are or where you live we are all living under the threat of immediate destruction being it due to nuclear war, environmental destruction or some brutal global leader taking over the show. Empires comes and goes but brutality remains the same as long as we buy into the lies we’re being told by the political establishment.
And these people not voted in by the people, but by the other grubs in parliament, so why should we bother to listen, not legitimate
Good afternoon inmates!
I just shared the Apollo 11 press conference from 69, with observations and the famous question from the late Sir Patrick Moore...

My grandfather fought in both WWI and WWII. He was from Cardiff. I've been fascinated about everything that is Welsh, yet I've never been there (I'm not from the UK).
For the last couple of years, I've had a deep longing in me to go to my ancestor's lands. It's brought tears to my eyes.
Listening to Neil has just made that longing stronger.
Someday, I'll go there. I think my ancestors are calling me.
From one welsh warrior to another. Your father land if a beautiful country, and the people will welcome you with open arms. 🙏
We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides/We'll keep a welcome in the Vales/ This land you knew will still be singing/When you come home again to Wales.
You will probably enjoy this then, it's the national anthem of Wales, sung beautifully. It's very stirring so gt your hanky ready.

You need to go then. You will then wonder why you never did before. We often do not listen to our spiritual selves in this materialistic society. Yet we very much need to be in touch with our spiritually. The best route to finding our spirit, is usually to visit somewhere where we find that connection. For many of us, this is through nature and historical ancient grounds, places of beauty and with amazing energy and vibrations. As humans we need this or we lose ourselves 🙏
@@goodvibes-pw9xlVR Thank you! I love to think there is something of my grandfather's Welsh warrior in me :)

Always amazing how they managed to build such magnificent castles on the edge of cliffs wonderful episode Neil 😍
NEIL OLIVER. Hello. I just wanted to share with you that I am also love Castles. Shame is that the English castles were all wrecked by Oliver's Army. Cromwell had a lot to answer for. He really gave Yorkshire a proper going over. I am Yorkshire born and bred and proud to be so. Also. Ivor Emmanuel was much appreciated by my mother. She loved him and probably still does. She's 90 and has seen a lot of life.
Thank you Neil for this amazing episode. The way you tied in Harlech Castle, the song and the film Zulu, so seamless. All of it gave me a lump in my throat and goose bumps 🙏💙🏴
Love Harlech Castle , that walls a bit dodgy round the top, especially when it's windy
Fascinating Neil, thank you. What a magnificent castle x
I love history but in school it was all post-war US politics - ugh! Thanks for reminding me why I love it and presenting it better than anyone else ever has : )
I visited Harlech Castle decades ago, and was very impressed- such a solid building, with a commanding view!
The school anthem of my mother's highschool (Sydney Girls Highschool) was set to the tune of Men of Harlech - one of the reasons I went there!
So stirring!
Love you Neil.
As castle-y as it gets. 😆👍
Great film. One of the best lines in all film history. The younger soldier says to the hardbitten sargent. Paraphrase....How come we will die today? Sargent( calmly, but with great grit) .... because we are here. Serious hardass that sargent.
It is, in reality that colour sergeant was only 24, and was the youngest CS in the Army not an old sweat as shown
@@spm36 WATCH FOR WE WERE SOLDIERS MEL GIBSON AND UNDERSTAND CANNON FODDER WE DESERVE ALL THAT COMES OUR WAY
Colonialism and imperialism brought them there. The Zulu’s weren’t too pleased with that, I guess. Quite simple really!
@@freetibet1000 yeah, the Zulu empire was jealous of its lands too. 😂
Sam B,
Yes the Zulu Empire took that land by force in the first place. The Zulus were not indigenous to South Africa. They were northern invaders.
Neil, most of us do our best fighting with our backs against the wall.
Thank God Neil is the real deal...
Neil, you are the most engrossing History teacher I have had the pleasure of watching since the great Mr Holmes who taught and instilled such a love of History in a very lost Kid at School nearly 50 years ago thank you Neil and especially Mr Holmes.
So stimulating!❤
'Peak bonkers'😄 Brilliant. SO happy to be able to support your work and livelihood.
My favourite film and yes, when they sing it does make you have goosebumps. I'm old enough to realise that nothing is never as it seems so the fact that if there was a song sung it was a different one is almost to be expected. The film keeps alive the story of Rorke's Drift and the bravery of the men. This is what Neil does, he brings history alive and makes the mens deeds real. Wonderful.
My take of this story is that Neil dismantles the hypocrisy of myth-making in a most brutal and effective way. The story behind the story is that those British soldiers where there in the land of the zulus because of brutal imperialism. What’s the glory in that?
Free Tibet
You do know that the Zulus were only in Zululand due to brutal imperialism, right? The Zulus were outside invaders to southern Africa. They were Bantu people from the north. They invaded what is now Zululand by force and took it from those who were living there before them.
@@lyndoncmp5751 If we justify our own wrongdoings with what wrongs others have done before us, how is that going to make the world a better place? Also, we should be careful about where we get our information from. I bet the Zulu nation got their own story who they are where they came from? If you suggest that the British were in the southern parts of Africa to punish the Zulu people for what they may have done in the past I can only laugh. We know precisely why colonial powers invade and pillage other nations and peoples, don’t we?
I hate the thought of soldiers quaking in their boots.. because those souls were undoubtedly kids? Barely adults. And for whatever reason, they found themselves as Canon fodder, as though their lives were worth jack shit. 💔
I have learned these poor young boys cried for their mothers on the front lines of WW 1 & 2. They were forced in to it. Yes they weren't supposed to be younger than 16 - but they _knew_ they were. They signed up because their families were going hungry in the home, with or without them. What choice did they have? At 16 they would be called up anyway. Today we cannot fathom this lifestyle. The least we can do is give honour to them and never forget.
😭😭
Love note to your love letter..You have Outdone yourself, Sir. Neil Oliver..again..but this one will be hard to top..Bless You.
i am of Welsh/Scot/Danish(granpop was a Laird) & Onondaga heritage(mother & her kin-wolf clan)...so..this speaks to me..on a cellular level. It stirs the blood, gives me shivers, & the visuals make my eyes mist over..i have never been in this lifetime..but i swear i know what the air smells & feels like..& the spring of the ground, the tones of the rock cliffs. The echos in the valleys between the high hills..i just know cos it's in my blood.
As i watch this....the harrowing events of today, so loudly sensationalized by the mainstream medias...fall into a lesser perspective...we have been here before..and we will be again
& i can hear pops pipes..shimmering in the moonlight as he paces on the rocks looking out over the turbulent ocean.
& Grannie would say, as a young child, she heard pipes one unusually bright dawn, when picking oysters out of the sand on the shore for the tribes feast...& though she could not explain it she knew they were playing for her..
Thank You

We loved Harlech Castle and when we visited an amazing harp player was there
The photo you used of (I am supposing) the Zulu Tribe was not just"men" as the the first rank in this photo were all woman. Shaka had female regiments but they were not integrated with the male regiments. The female regiments were commanded by females and were well trained. They were considered supplemental units.
I knew about the seige of Constantinopole through reading Neil's Master of Shadows, a great diverting, imagistic read! I think we all feel like we are under seige, though it is by an amorphous force, not completely visible. I think of the Alamo in Texas, and Masada. The song "Men of Harlech" had become something of a legend before the film, even, as my mom used to sing it to us, in California, long ago in the Paleolithic lol. Something so calming about this history!

''Violence is a necessary, and thus inevitable, part of human activity, given its purest form in war. Discuss''
When dialogue and diplomacy are exhausted what else is there?
If one considers it necesary to significantly reduce the population in short time there is no better means than war. I once toppled the schoolyard bully in elementary school. Oversized and over matched, I had gotten tired of him throwing things into my hair in class. I came to see you talk on your book tour for "a history of the British Isles in 100 places", and I found your love for Britain and her history quite liberating, at a time when it seemed unfashionable for anyone to talk about Britain without a sort of flagellating cynicism. Of course I already knew you from 'Coast' which I used to love. Over the last couple of years I've watched with grim sympathy as your trust in the establishment has evaporated; you're one of the few voices which reassures me that I'm not going insane when I feel like the foundations of liberal democracy are being washed out from underneath us. Yet through all that I haven't listened to any of these podcasts. I just wanted to say, it's marvelous to hear you talking about history again old chap.

Another fascinating piece of history and fact which I have to say kept myself and my 18 year old daughter engrossed . I was just wondering as I was listening to your production about the types of defences and attacks at the time which the other day I was told that Alexander the Great didn't leave India because he got to the Ganges and was told that on the other side there was still millions of men still to fight but alas he was confronted with guns and explosives when trying to lay siege to an Indian castle ,now this was 300 and odd years bc where we are led to believe that guns have only been around for about 600 years ,I checked the part about Indian guns and the evidence is there and it makes me think how much more of our history is a lie ...geeez who only knows eh?
