I once, as a late teen, was camping outside Harlech with a friend called Andy... I went to walk into town because the campsite wasn't too far out. I remember walking down the hill and seeing the castle slowly start to appear out of the morning fog, and just as the fog lifted, a choir that was practicing inside the castle started singing "Men of Harlech" - I stood in the middle of the road, frozen, and started to sob - it was arguably the most spiritual moment I have ever had in my life.

Love how you say ‘coo’. Yep, you are keeping me sane. We will be ok. We will prevail. I just feel sad to be honest. We live in Portugal where many are still weighted down by the leftovers of communism (1974 was the year in which a socialist government overturned Salazar). So, still there is a strong undertone of ‘follow the leader’. So, not surprisingly Portugal is one of the most submissive countries in terms of these past few years. Me and my boys will always be critical thinkers and I believe we can all get through this by using common sense! Mr Oliver, keep doing what you do. You inspire me to do what my instinct tells me. ❤️👍🇵🇹🇬🇧👋 thanks.

I just want to point out that if there had been any “critical thinking” those European boys would never had been there defending an imperialistic supply station in the middle of Zulu land in the first place. They where there because they were told to! All wars rely on obeying orders and not one’s own critical thinking. As long as that goes on there will not be peace in the world. We are duped to believe that if we vote for a particular party (ideology) we can make a better world. But in reality it is still brute force that wins the day in this world. No matter who you are or where you live we are all living under the threat of immediate destruction being it due to nuclear war, environmental destruction or some brutal global leader taking over the show. Empires comes and goes but brutality remains the same as long as we buy into the lies we’re being told by the political establishment.

If you suggest that the British were in the southern parts of Africa to punish the Zulu people for what they may have done in the past I can only laugh. I hate the thought of soldiers quaking in their boots.. because those souls were undoubtedly kids? Barely adults. And for whatever reason, they found themselves as Canon fodder, as though their lives were worth jack shit. 💔
I have learned these poor young boys cried for their mothers on the front lines of WW 1 & 2. They were forced in to it. Yes they weren't supposed to be younger than 16 - but they _knew_ they were. They signed up because their families were going hungry in the home, with or without them. What choice did they have? At 16 they would be called up anyway. Today we cannot fathom this lifestyle. The least we can do is give honour to them and never forget.

i am of Welsh/Scot/Danish(granpop was a Laird) & Onondaga heritage(mother & her kin-wolf clan)...so..this speaks to me..on a cellular level. It stirs the blood, gives me shivers, & the visuals make my eyes mist over..i have never been in this lifetime..but i swear i know what the air smells & feels like..& the spring of the ground, the tones of the rock cliffs. The echos in the valleys between the high hills..i just know cos it's in my blood.
As i watch this....the harrowing events of today, so loudly sensationalized by the mainstream medias...fall into a lesser perspective...we have been here before..and we will be again
& i can hear pops pipes..shimmering in the moonlight as he paces on the rocks looking out over the turbulent ocean.
& Grannie would say, as a young child, she heard pipes one unusually bright dawn, when picking oysters out of the sand on the shore for the tribes feast...& though she could not explain it she knew they were playing for her..

The photo you used of (I am supposing) the Zulu Tribe was not just"men" as the the first rank in this photo were all woman. Shaka had female regiments but they were not integrated with the male regiments. The female regiments were commanded by females and were well trained. They were considered supplemental units.

I knew about the seige of Constantinopole through reading Neil's Master of Shadows, a great diverting, imagistic read! I think we all feel like we are under seige, though it is by an amorphous force, not completely visible. I think of the Alamo in Texas, and Masada. The song "Men of Harlech" had become something of a legend before the film, even, as my mom used to sing it to us, in California, long ago in the Paleolithic lol. Something so calming about this history!

I came to see you talk on your book tour for "a history of the British Isles in 100 places", and I found your love for Britain and her history quite liberating, at a time when it seemed unfashionable for anyone to talk about Britain without a sort of flagellating cynicism. Of course I already knew you from 'Coast' which I used to love. Over the last couple of years I've watched with grim sympathy as your trust in the establishment has evaporated; you're one of the few voices which reassures me that I'm not going insane when I feel like the foundations of liberal democracy are being washed out from underneath us. Yet through all that I haven't listened to any of these podcasts. I just wanted to say, it's marvelous to hear you talking about history again old chap.

Another fascinating piece of history and fact which I have to say kept myself and my 18 year old daughter engrossed . I was just wondering as I was listening to your production about the types of defences and attacks at the time which the other day I was told that Alexander the Great didn't leave India because he got to the Ganges and was told that on the other side there was still millions of men still to fight but alas he was confronted with guns and explosives when trying to lay siege to an Indian castle ,now this was 300 and odd years bc where we are led to believe that guns have only been around for about 600 years ,I checked the part about Indian guns and the evidence is there and it makes me think how much more of our history is a lie ...geeez who only knows eh?
