I'm not doing mixing for a leaving but for a side job, but still got artists to work with and I definitely am looking to improve my signature sound each and every time. I do have a personal balance taste and feel, but artists that works with me comes to that balance and also the fact I keep trying to evolve my signature, test thing, being curious. Being curious is the thing that helped me the most these past 2 years. But yeah thanks so much for making such videos, I discovered Nail The Mix channel few weeks ago by doom scrolling on UA-cam and what a refreshing channel. love your approach, speed run mixes (defo great exercice to do and watch) and so. Greetings from France.
Sorry to do another post. You said positioning yourself on the market by "sound" is best. I agree once more ;-) I`m a carpenter and of course I could get jobs by beeing the cheapest one on the market, but I can also get jobs beeing the "best" for the job. And by this way, I get even more money for the job ;-). And it`s much more satisfying. I appreciate your statement of taking responsebility for doing the best you can for your clients! Well spoken!
Hey Joel. Please share (if possible) some songs mixed by you with this new mindset/gear you're talking about. I'm intrigued. Thank you very much for sharing.
Sure, I'm currently mixing the following the last 2 weeks: - Keith Wallen's (of Breaking Benjamin) new solo record (Rise/BMG) - Rain City Drive's new single Frozen - (Thriller Records) - MIYAVI single - That's What I'm Gonna Be - (Universal Japan) - Emblem3 - Dead In The Water (Better Noise Records) - Call Me Karizma new song Feat Landmvrks - Halo (ex Thriller records) (Not sure when any of this drops as all of these bands are signed. Sometimes you mix something and it takes months to hit the release cycle.) The only song I've got out on the SSL is Versus Me - Blackout
I really appreciate the honesty in this video! Too many people these days tip toe around the fact that analog gear DOES matter when trying to build a signature sound. Yes great results can be achieved with digital, I’ve found personally for the way my brain works there’s more intuition and less second guessing balances or eq or compression when I work on a console/ with outboard. I aim for the sound in my head, get as close to it as possible and then move on, no second guessing!
I feel dumb but I still can’t even tell the difference in sound between actual types of compressors… like if I hear an 1176 or a 2a I really have no idea which is which… but I know I’ll get there. been making music for over 20 years now but only started really diving into recording and production in the last few, it is truly amazing the wealth of knowledge that’s out there now that simply wasn’t available in the past.
Well I just thought...what you said about doing the same moves over and over again, and not taking the time to experiment...sounds like a guitar player playing the same patterns over and over everytime on every song. And I agree with you...mixing is similar, it`s art. ;-) So I guess you are right about taking time to let things develop and be inspired and experiment. Great point!
@@joelwanasekurm Thx man! As an amateur mixer of my own music, I really enjoy your videos. The cannibal mix breakdown was great! Was asking because many mixer seems to be doing the youtube stuff.
Yess! I feel like getting bored of stuff quickly is such a superpower, cause you'll constantly want new stuff!

Fuck yeah Joel you always get me so motivated.
I love these deep-insight videos you make. Please keep doing this.
Thanks Rob!
How did you leave Bob Clearmountain off that list in the beginning? 😮

This type of videos are the best because they teach you how to think and approach things💪🏻
I appreciate that!

Compression is one of the more subtle things your ear learns. It’s not easy.
Love these videos Joel!
Thanks 🙏

Always informative advice. This actually made me delve a bit more thought into selecting a mixer and producing new stuff
Great to hear
As always super knowlegeable video Joel! Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it!
Not me feeling SUPER called out when you talk about watching videos in 2X speed... while watching this video in 2X speed. 😳
2x speed is the law!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Do mixers make more money on youtube or on mixing ?
Mixers make a lot of money mixing. At least good ones who are in demand. It takes hundreds of thousands of subs to make $ at UA-cam.

Aye first 😎
