i have one of these amps. here is how i went about buying it: i have a neighbor who has recently gotten into playing guitar. he also has plenty of money so he just buys whatever, whenever. well, i was over one day helping him to learn something on a guitar because he needs someone to help him learn. well, he had one of these as50d amps. i never heard one and didnt even know marshall made an acoustic amp. i went ahead and plugged my acoustic into it (just a Yamaha A1M since its a good sounding guitar for the money) and i heard the best acoustic sound i have ever heard before. i knew i wanted one myself and in that moment, i had only played three chords through it. once i got home maybe two hours later, after finishing up helping neighbor out, i went and ordered one. i had to. especially after seeing the gordon giltrap demo of it on the marshall youtube channel. the problem was that the cheapest i could find it for new at the time was for $499.... i have had it now for about a year and it has been great. it has everything i could want in an acoustic amp in a somewhat small-ish single unit. i have heard sounds come out of my as50d so beautiful i had to stop to listen and let it last as long as i could. maybe it was the right sound at the right moment? i dont know. either way, i like that when you get onto the guitar, since its still a marshall, it has a nice bite, in typical marshall fashion....all that being said, i have never used another acoustic amp, so i really dont have an irl comparison to match it against. if i had to guess though, based on what ive heard recorded over the years, this really is a great acoustic amp without having to go 100w
Dominick, this is the best overall review I've seen. This amp is one of 8 different amps I use and you coverage of the pros, cons, and features is right on track. I use this amp from time to time with my vintage 70s Fender strat since I am not an acoustic guy. It's a great amp. Definitely agree with your comments about the grill cloth and pedal.
Good review. I searched for many acoustic guitar amps within this price range and the Marshall AS50D seems to be the best of them. Every feature makes a lot of sense and the people at Marshall clearly gave it a lot of thought, which I wouldn't have expected from a company that's known for their hard rockin' electric guitar amps. This thing is perfect for small venues and even for bigger venues, you could still use the DI and use it as a monitor. However, I do think this is a budget amp. I understand you wrote it a couple of years ago, but at the moment this amp goes for a laughable price of €299,- That's cheap. Certainly for what you get, a versatile and good sounding acoustic guitar amp. So that cover? It's not that much extra. And I don't really need a footswitch for a reverb or a chorus. Once you use reverb, you'll never switch it off anyway. And for what it's worth, I'd probably use the send and return to add my Neunaber Immerse Reverberator, a Keeley 30ms Double Tracker (for chorus like sounds - check it out), my Aphex Aural Exciter/Big Bottom, and a small clean booster pedal. I mean, these pedals cost me a lot more than that amp. Hell, I could buy two or three of them for that money, hahaha.... Off course I had (and still have) these pedals for my electric rig. I'm not an acoustic guitar player. Well, I'm going to be. For some songs anyway. So this is the perfect amp for me in every way. And thank you for this review. You convinced me of the fact that I was right all along. I give myself three months to purchase one (they make a beautiful green limited edition version as well, same price. I might go for that one, if they still have them by then). Anyway, thanks again! :-) Man, why can't I ever keep my comments short?!?!
Hey thanks for the indepth review. Just went out and bought it. I was a little critical of the initial output of the guitar but now that I've tampered a bit more with the right knobs after watching your review, it's sounding good. Thanks very much.
Thanks , I am 21/2 years into playing at 64 yrs old. Lol. But I have a YT channel I write songs or filler. Every bit of music on our channel I do. I gigged for decades as a singer songwriter, and sure not into dealing with the practice with a band any longer. 4 decades of playing gigs was enough. ( still miss it though) So a friend recommended this video to me. I am so new to guitar that I am not sure what I want or need. Thank you so much. Ken Life with Ken and jane🤠👍
I actually bought the AS50R instead as it has real reverb rather than digital, otherwise identical to the AS50D. (the R might not have the phantom power feature, I need to check this)
Thanks so much. You covered things I needed to know, especially about the D.I. out. I am trying to get a nearly new one from a local guy on CL and if that falls thru, I'll pull the trigger on a new one. I picked up a Taylor at GC last saturday and plugged it into their floor model of this amp and was really impressed. Thanks again.
Thanks for the overview. I have had one of these for a couple of years now and am quite satisfied with it. I've paired it with my Taylor t5z and a Heil PR-22, seems to work just fine for me. I do plan to add the slip cover and foot switch. Cheers.
Good review. I just picked one up today. A couple of points. The EQ does appear to route to the DI and Line Out. Makes sense for the small gigs that this amp is designed for where you are controlling your own sound. If you are running it into a FOH system, you're going to be annoying your sound man. Fortunately it sounds pretty good with the settings close to noon. I can't see needing to adjust it much once you have it dialed in. Second point, the lack of a Mid EQ was the thing that caused me to hesitate. However the anti-feedback Notch control gives you a 10dB cut at a selectable frequency between 80hZ and 1kHz, so it does give you some tone-shaping capability in addition to its primary function. As you point out, it is a bassier sounding amp. I'd advise someone considering it to try it out with the guitar you're going to be using. If you've got a really warm sounding Martin or a boomy dreadnaught, expect to be dialing back the bass a lot. I'm playing a very bright sounding Taylor and like the depth that the Marshall gives. I tried out the Fishman Mini too. It's a nice sounding amp, but it just sounded smaller. The twin speakers was what really won me over on the Marshall.
Great Review man! Got the AS50D recently and stillt got to put some hours on it to get all the settings tailor-fitted to my needs. But great amp anyways and great Vid
jim golovan it‘s definitely suitable for Bar Gigs up to around 100 people. Anything bigger than that it just sends the waves straight ahead, so anybody sitting too far left or right from it doesn’t really get the whole spectrum. But for my purposes it‘s great and I love the sound. Brings the vocals out real clean
Great Marshall/Fishman review vid Dominick! from Michael T Wyman fellow UA-camr and jam night rock guitarist -sometimes busker .....I have some JBL, Peavey and Fender stuff.... love good reviews like yours. ...rock on bro! yeah keep jamming too.
A lot of the amps you mentioned as being more portable only have one driver (or smaller drivers). With this larger amp, you get the stereo effects going through two good sized drivers. Well worth it, I'd say.
tested this amp today. its a little big but hes great. with marshall you have really nice built quality. and i liked the bass on the amp very much. great amp! will buy it
Thanks for the review, really helpful. I'm wanting to run a mandolin mainly so I'm going to try a few amps before I buy, but this is definitely on my short list!
Great review man. I just got this amp and love it. My only beef that drives me crazy is i feel like a delay option should be available and i hate that there isnt a reverb knob on each channel. Really not a fan of reverb balance knob.
Marshall should be kicking a buck or two in your pocket my man, excellent review! I just purchased the white model of this amp..... Everything you said is spot on. I Play a PRS Se Angelus with an L.R. Baggs lyric and I am picky as hell about tone, this amp is one of the most "sound" investments I have ever made. Thanks for such a clear, intelligent review..... God knows they are rare.
I have a Ibanez Troubadour 35 wt ..and it's really close to that Marshall but down fall no affects loop .. does have xlr out and chr & reverb.. I have a chance to grab the Marshall for $120 and I may have to pick up the Marshall.. I'd like to have heard some tones in this video...but I'm heading to the Marshall channel now thank you for this video
Great video Dominick. Im totally going to buy this amp for my classical guitar soon after watching your review. Question though: since I have a piezo pickup with XLR connection, how could I go though my pedal effects that do not have an XLR input and 48V phantom power? I understand that the FX loop on the back of the amp is for pedal effects with the typical 1/4 inch jack, but what is the solution for pedals that I want to connect in the front (in the line between my guitar and the amp before reaching the microphone channel with the XLR connection)?, sust as a volume/expression pedal, compressor etc? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. You can get yourself an XLR to 1/4 adapter that goes right on your cable. They arent very expensive and can be found at Sweetwater, Guitar Center or Sam Ash. May be able to pick up a couple of them on Amazon
@@DominickArena Thanks. My piezo pickup requires 48V phantom power which I only get from the microphone channel of the amp. If I chose the adapter solution, do I still require the phantom power?
@@costabrava301 that I'm not 100% sure on. I would assume the pedal your running in between the amp and guitar would act as a signal boost and not require it. I could be wrong on this
Great review! I have a couple of other questions about the amp. 1. Do you miss not having a separate Tone adjustment for the Middle frequencies? 2. How much (if any) would a thicker grill/speaker cover affect the tone on the amp, especially the higher frequencies? 3. Would you buy this amp again? Thanks!
Hello amd thanks for watching! To anwswer your questions The mid eq wasn't that important to me since I have a 5 Band EQ on my Acoustic. I do have a Mid EQ on my Fishman Artist and it is nice to scoop the mids out once in awhile to get a Darker tone. As far as Grills go. Yes...the thicker the grill can mute it slightly. Running a thick weave so to speak. BUT my Fishman has a really nice Grill Cloth thats sturdy (Medium Density Weave) I like it alot. No muting. I just don't like the "Panty Hose" covering Marshall decided to use on this amp. As far as buying it again I'd have to say No. I like the amp don't get me wrong but experience some probs. I devolped a harsh rattle from 2 knobs buzzing in the amp chassis. It couldn't be fixed. They had to replace the whole unit for me. Also the Chorus effect needs to be Subtle otherwise it saturated my tone. Other than that the build qaulity it great and is good for small gigs. I picked up a Fishman Artist and thats my main Gig Amp. 120 watts bi-amped 100 to the speak 20 to the tweeter Loud!!! - lighter than Marshall by 10 lbs Phantom power for Condenser pickups amd mics 8 effects built in that blend well I absolutely love The Artist! BUT remeber its $150 more than the AS50D. So if money is not an issue I highly recommend The Loidbox Artist. But still recommend the Marshall over the Fishman Mini :-)
Thanks man. Unfortunately it does not have a battery option. Most battery operated amps I've seen and used were under powered and small drivers. Mainly used for busking and not bigger venue shows. But if your in the market for a batt operated amp check out the Roland line. I'm really impressed with there battery amps. They make a dual 5 inch and a dual 8 that have a ton of features
Bought this on strength of your presentation. I would love to ask you a question. I want to do vocals on it. I am getting feedback a lot, even when I put feedback switch on. Any advice? Thanks, oh and how can I listen to it and monitor my vocals? Would you recommend a mixer if so which one? Also would u recommend a mixer with effects please? Big thanks
thanks ❕super güdd review ❕🐸 i am considering this amp against the fishman mini - so i've watched several reviews and for the same cost new (atleast here the prices are equal) > i am tending toward the Marshall over the Fishman with each review
Hi Dominick, since this video was made 5yrs. ago have there been any changes in features or upgrades to this amp and do you still highly endorse it? Thanks for the awesome review!!
Thanks for the comment. No changes that I know of. And yes its a great amp for the money. I have upgraded to the Fishman Pro since then but it's double the price. For under $400 the Marshall is tough to beat
Great review. I have this amp, and I really like it. I’m toying with the idea of getting the Fender Acoustasonic II amp, because it has a little more to offer in effects, and it’s a bit louder, and also has the side holes which projects the sound out the sides to give almost a stereo effect, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. A guy is offering it to me in a guitar trade, but I like my Marshall, so I’m not sure. Do you have any experience with the Acoustasonic II amp, and how it might compare to the Marshall?
I have this amp and so far, I have used it twice in a small venue. The first night, I played behind and to the side of the amp. Because the lounge was small and there was a lot of background noise, it was difficult to hear myself play. The second night, I used the line out feature so I could hook up another small guitar amp and use that as a monitor. It seemed to work? Can you use the line out feature for this purpose, especially if there is no house system to plug into?
@@DominickArena Thanks, so you used a self powered pa cab. I was wondering, because the small guitar amp I used seemed to feedback when the line out from the AS50D was plugged into the guitar input. I instead plugged it into the aux input and it seemed to solve the problem. I figured there was a better solution, but that was all I had at the time. Any good suggestion for a good pa cab or monitor?
@@billpoche5279 Depends on how much you wanna spend. For decent budget stuff I really like the Alto stuff. Best bang for the buck. I use a small 8 inch 180 watt Alto Powered PA cab as a monitor when playing Coffee Houses and Bar Patio gigs and holds it own no problem. Yamaha makes wonderful PA cabs but they cant get quite pricey when you jump into their higher end cabs
Is this Lars Ulrich giving a guitar amp review? Great review. Have had one oaf these for a few years really like it. Only problem I have is using it while gigging. The D.I. on the back running into a mixer at the front of the house always creates a hum. The dreaded 50cycle hum. Any idea how to eliminate aside from using the same power source.
HypnotistDougT I had this problem too. I don't use this amp anymore live and use a Fishman Artist for Live Gigs and have nothing but good things to say bout the Artist amp. Great great amp
Hello, so Ive been using this amp for awhile and I use the fx loop for a looper and delay but Ive noticed that I have alot of noise. Do you have any suggestions or comments about this type of issue? thanks again for this video and your content
This is not a buffered effects loop so alittle noise is normal, but if it's excessive...try the loop with a different pedal and see if still noisey. If not then it's the pedal itself. Thanks for watching, much appreciated
Hey man, great video! Thanks a Lot!! ONE question: Do you have any comments or knowledge of how this amp would/could actually sound with an electric guitar? Horrible or doable? Thanks from sweden!
Dave Sad it would be "doable" but wouldn't recommend it. It would have the same sound signature as if you plugged directly into a PA. The speakers are setup for full range sound hence why you can use Vocals thru this amp. Where guitar amps are voiced for midrange frequency and used for magnetic pickups. So in short....yes it would work but your tone on the electric wouldn't be as good as a dedicated electric guitar amp. Thanks for watching brother :)
Thank's for such a quick answer. The reason I ask is because I have an good electric guitar but no good Amp for it but at the same time im an "acoustic" player so to say, and this amp seems awesome. Cant afford 2 amps, thats basically why I asked. I have heard about the Fender 150 which seems good for both electric and acoustic but this one seems even better for the acoustic sound. Lord know:S ! I really appreciate your answer! Hope you enjoy your new Amp!;P Stay strong/dave
Hey man how goes it. Yeah it does alright with a drummer as long as he isn't a hard hitter. For a full acoustic venue no problem. I actually bought the Fishman Loudbox Artist. 120 watts thru a single 8 and dedicated biamped tweeter. Blows this amp away as far as tone and volume goes. Stays clean all thru the volume pot. But yet it's about $150 more than the Marshall. So if ya got the extra coin....get the Artist 😁
Hi. I want to buy both this amp and some speakers, but I do have a small budget... Since this amp is having 2 satellites could I use this amp as a speaker for my iPhone? How does it sound? Thanks in advance!
Yes you can hook up an IPhone thru the Aux jack using a RCA to 3.5 cable into the headphone jack on the phone. It sounds OK and does get loud! The speakers in the Marshall are capable of all frequencies up to 20k so music sounds just like it would be coming from a PA system. Not bad at all. Just remember that the cabinet isn't ported and waved for music but the intended for vocals and guitar so you won't achieve Audiophile music quality. But for a party or small venue you can fill the room with music or a 40 person dance party.
In the venues ive played where it couldnt run on its own...i always had the house Mic it. Never had good luck with acoustic amps in general running the di xlr out. I now use a Fishman Artist Pro in live situations and will say the DI on that is better. 😉
Dominick Arena thanks for the reply. Yeah, the DI thing is annoying. I have a couple of condenser mics I’ve used with it, and some dynamics in other scenarios. I’ll likely stick with the Marshall, but that Fishman is slick!
SaxMan426 I am planning to buy this both for home use, and as monitor (so I also plan to use DI XLR)... after see your opinion, I am now getting concerned.... how bad is this XLR DI OUT.... is it so bad that it is not recommended to connect to PA system?
ramkalaskar007 not bad, just don’t get out out of it. I quit trying a while back and just mic it. It’s a great amp and I’m sure you can mess with it and make it work, I am just super impatient.
nice video, frankly, I am using this one for couple of years but I would like to change it for AER 60 III., But AER does not have an option to use reverb and chorus simultaneosly. The difference of sound is incredible though...
Yeah should be no problem. Most "acoustic" guitar amps are setup full range frequency unlike an electric guitar amp. So should handle a keyboard no problem.
Hey how's it going. This amp doesn't have an external speaker out like most electric guitar amps do. It wouldn't sound right playing thru your Marshall 4×12 cab because those have Guitar speakers which have a freq response of usually around 7000hz. Where acoustic speakers have either full range speakers up to 20k hz or run tweeters. These amps have a mix out which can be ran to the house PA.
Dominick Arena Thanks so much for the reply. Yeah, you're right, I didn't even think about the frequency response difference. But I'm convinced that this is the right amp for me instead of the other ones that are out on the market right now. Thank you for posting this video and the tip!!
Can anyone verify the model of "custom" Celestions are in it? Saw a review elsewhere that the buyer opened it to find two totally unlabeled speakers inside. The other 'badge engineered' versions of the Marshall AS50R [original version had spring reverb, vs the AS50D with digital reverb]... anyhoo, the other versions of the 50 watt AS50R are known as 60 watt AC60R amps, by "Fame" primarily in Europe I think, and by Megatone/Mega, and by Sam Ash's house brand, Guitar Research. I have the Guitar Research AC60R version of the Marshal AS50R, and it has Megatone speakers inside. I thought maybe that was the only difference: The Marshall has Celestions, but the others have Megatone speakers made in Korea. But, now I wonder if the Marshall has unlabeled speakers because they're just made in Korea or China to Celestion specs.... anyone able to verify the speakers in their Marshalls?
The Fishman mini, at low volume, sounds a bit more naturally acoustic than the Marshall, but the 2x8" stereo in the marshall vs 1x6" mono for the fishman mini means at mid- and high volume, the Marshall is better. If you're also singing through it, there is no comparison. The Marshall is 10x better for vocals. Plus the marshall has features you have to step up to the 'artist' to get in the fishman.
EJ Guerrero Maybe some light overdrive (Kinda like what Cobain used on Man Who Sold The World Unplugged)...Wouldn't recommend Distortion on an Acoustic amp or Acoustic Guitar.

I'd like to have heard some tones in this video...but I'm heading to the Marshall channel now thank you for this video
it's 50 watts however It's good to use the line out to connect to a p.a. at bigger shows.
Great review man... thx
Thanks man! I just ordered one today!
because the back is closed, the front cloth material needs to be thin
I could be wrong on this
Great review, very informative.
This was very helpful, thank you!
Thanks for the info man!
120 watts bi-amped
100 to the speak 20 to the tweeter
Loud!!! - lighter than Marshall by 10 lbs
Phantom power for Condenser pickups amd mics
8 effects built in that blend well
I absolutely love The Artist! BUT remeber its $150 more than the AS50D. So if money is not an issue I highly recommend The Loidbox Artist. But still recommend the Marshall over the Fishman Mini :-)
ever try the AS100D?
GREAT REVIEW...THANKS! How do you compare it to the other acoustic amps in that range. Is this your favorite go to acoustic amp? Thanks in advance.
Excellent review!
Great review,,,,, Could i do a live gig with this???
Grahame Hedley No,problem. This amp could easily address 60 to 100 person crowd
Thanks Dominic. I'm torn between this amp Fender Acoustic 100
Hey nice review man, concise and to the point. I'm just wondering if the amp has the means to be powered by batteries? Thanks
Nice video !Some people talking that as50 d is stereo amp, so is it mono or stereo guitare amp?
Bought this on strength of your presentation. I would love to ask you a question. I want to do vocals on it. I am getting feedback a lot, even when I put feedback switch on. Any advice? Thanks, oh and how can I listen to it and monitor my vocals? Would you recommend a mixer if so which one? Also would u recommend a mixer with effects please? Big thanks
Thanks man, very useful video !
Great clip bud. Very informative and to the point. Thanks for sharing that. What a great amp! Take it easy. Marshall Takamine
My Marshall Amp came with the foot switch, but i think you can only get with the amp depending on the store, and yes it does come in very handy
thanks ❕super güdd review ❕🐸
i am considering this amp against the fishman mini - so i've watched several reviews and for the same cost new (atleast here the prices are equal) > i am tending toward the Marshall over the Fishman with each review
Great review...Thanks. Good information
Hi, Great review. One question I have is .... can you tell me if this amp would be good for doing small gigs in bars etc with no P.A. system ?
Thanks for watching and it really depends on the size of the bar. It can easily address a bar of 40 to 60 people no problem without being mic'd up
@@DominickArena Hi Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
Thanks - thinking of buying this to supplement the Vox AGA30 I've got; sounds like it may be worth the extra cash!
Nice job. Well done.
Where can I buy a European version of this AMp with 220v- 50Hz ? thanks
Thomann.
Great Review Friend
nice review man! question: what switchfoot device is compatible for this as50d amp? and can i connect my electric guitar as well?
I have this amp and so far, I have used it twice in a small venue. The first night, I played behind and to the side of the amp. Because the lounge was small and there was a lot of background noise, it was difficult to hear myself play. The second night, I used the line out feature so I could hook up another small guitar amp and use that as a monitor. It seemed to work? Can you use the line out feature for this purpose, especially if there is no house system to plug into?
Sure can. I have used the line out into a small self powered pa cab as a monitor to myself. Works well.
Can you connect 2 microphones to the XLR connection by using a splitter
Good question, I'm not totally sure. Never tried a double mic setup. I would imagine it should work with a splitter
I am about to order this or fender acoustasonic Jr 40? which should I get my brother?
how would an Electric Guitar sound thru this acoustic amp ? not good or just ok or not bad ? thanks great demo very helfpful
Works great with electric guitar, that’s all I use with it
Hey man, great video! Thanks a Lot!!
ONE question:
Do you have any comments or knowledge of how this amp would/could actually sound with an electric guitar?
Good review man
Thank You :-)
Thanks for the review. Loudness- can it hang with a drummer and other guitarists in a band practice/small venue setting? thx again
I have this amp, and I love it. Wonderful sounds on channels 1 & 2. I can’t ever get any good sound out of the DI XLR out...any tips here??
Great great great review, thanks!
Thanks for comment and view. Appreciate it!
can I connect an electric guitar too??
@@yaiizaa658 You can. Has the same effect as plugging an Electric guitar into a PA direct. Clean only tones
nice video, frankly, I am using this one for couple of years but I would like to change it for AER 60 III., But AER does not have an option to use reverb and chorus simultaneosly. The difference of sound is incredible though...
Can you plug a keyboard in this?
Yeah should be no problem. Most "acoustic" guitar amps are setup full range frequency unlike an electric guitar amp. So should handle a keyboard no problem.
i didn't quite understand the effect loop socket in the back, can't you just connect your pedalboard on front?
either way
thanks!
Thankyou great review.
Can you hook up a external speaker(Marshall 4X12 cabinet) on this amp and where would you connect it to?
Does anyone play hollow body electrics through this, and if so, what do you think?
Can I run a tc helicon voice live vocal processor through this?
Yeah should be no problem since the amp is also a PA
Thanks. Good review.
Is it still working fine? Didn''t break ?
Actually sold it awhile back for a Fishman Loudbox Artist. It was working fine at that point 😉
Pls what is the référence for the foot Switch ?
www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PEDL91004--marshall-pedl-91004-2-button-footswitch
Sad it hasnt got 48v phantom power
head phone jack would be nice too.
Does the amp comes with a mains input cable? or do you have to buy one seperatly.
No cables included. Have to buy separately
I bought one a week ago and It came with one lol, strange.
TGGamesmaster Nice! I got mine from GC... They probably kept mine then lol
Lol.
GREAT REVIEW THANX ...
Thanks, thinking of buying the green one (brand new) for 370 USD.
check my video. I used this amp for them.
Thanks for the info, MR. I wish more of these demos would feature the vocal performance.
Hypothetically speaking, would this sound good at all with a distortion pedal?
EJ Guerrero Maybe some light overdrive (Kinda like what Cobain used on Man Who Sold The World Unplugged)...Wouldn't recommend Distortion on an Acoustic amp or Acoustic Guitar.
Dominick Arena makes sense. Thanks for the reply man
