  • How do you tell if your diamond is genuine? What is a diamond Simulant? Why don’t we have a field ‘test’ for synthetics? What is ‘screening’? Join Tanja Sadow, Dean of JDMIS and Armani Shariff from Presidium Instruments in a discussion about diamond testing equipment. Learn the difference between genuine diamonds and simulants like moissanite, and how to use diamond testing tools to tell them apart. You’ll also see how to differentiate between synthetic lab-grown diamonds vs natural diamonds using the Synthetic Diamond Screener II by Presidium.

    Great video. But with natural diamond v synthetic diamond, you say that 100% of synthetic diamonds do not absorb UV light. But I thought lab grown diamonds can fluoresce under UV light? (which presumably means they must absorb UV light). What have I not understood?

      Thank you for your comment. You are correct as Diamonds are the hardest gem known, but this is best done on rough material as it is destructive testing and can be problematic if not done carefully on finished goods. Best wishes, Tanja

    I have the presidium type 2 and its difficult to use bc most of the stons that i tested show that are natural I know that are for colorless stones but os not a 100% sure what you have or is necessary to make a pre check with the teste then I use the presidium tipe 2?

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg  Рік тому

      Hi Bryan,
      I am not sure if I fully understand your question but I will try to answer it and please let me know if I have misunderstood.
      Is your tool the presidium duo tester 2 which distinguishes between several colored stones as well as diamonds or is it just a diamond tester?
      The only purpose of the diamond tester is to determine whether it is a diamond or not. It is not capable of distinguishing natural versus synthetic diamonds... for this we need more sophisticated equipment. But it is a most useful tool if you are working with colorless materials of which there are so many today that look convincingly like diamond but are not.
      If you are working with the gem tester ll which distinguishes between many different types of colored gems as well as diamonds then it is advisable to do further testing and use your tester as a double confirmation. The duo gem tested ll is also not capable of distinguishing between natural versus synthetic material this would be best done using a microscope or today more sophisticated equipment generally found in the labs.
      We use the gem duo tester ll in our classes but this is usually after we have used other gemological equipment such as refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope, ect or whichever tool is necessary to eliminate the possibilities because there are so many similar looking minerals available today (approx 4800 species) which is exactly why pre-testing with other tools has to be done. (You will have noticed that the tool offers only the most common and typical options as it would be impossible to have thousands of options on one small tool) At that point when we have a good idea of what the material is and use the gem duo tester ll we will get our confirmation.
      I hope this was helpful but please contact me again if I misunderstood your question. 🙏
      Thank you - Tanja

      Hi Raj, thank you for you question. Yes, the tester can test on a clean surface of the rough diamond. For small diamond 0.01 ct, we recommend to use Adamas with micro tip

      @@JdmisEduSg tengo algunas piedras en bruto que me gustaría saber que son.. pero estoy en el Amazonas en Venezuela.. quiero saber cuánto vale el testers y si me lo pueden enviar?

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg  Рік тому +1

      Hola@@antonioborojo5227
      Los probadores son herramientas útiles, pero no son herramientas independientes. No confiaría en ningún probador (o ninguna prueba) para determinar el material que tiene. Tenemos un curso detallado de identificación de gemas en nuestra escuela, y nuestros estudiantes aprenden que la única forma de identificar correctamente una gema es mediante el proceso de eliminación. Comience con una prueba, esto reducirá sus opciones. Luego haz otra prueba, y otra.... hasta que estés seguro de lo que tienes.
      Los probadores de gemas se pueden usar como una de estas pruebas o como una "verificación" para asegurarse de que su proceso gemológico lo haya llevado a la identificación correcta. Los profesionales rara vez los utilizan como el único medio para identificar materiales... y estas probadores nunca le dirán si los materiales son naturales o sintéticos; en el mejor de los casos, "marcarán" una gema para una mayor investigación.
      Le recomendaría que se comunique con un laboratorio de gemas local (muchos gemólogos están felices de proporcionar identificaciones verbales a un precio más bajo que un certificado formal) y utilizarán su experiencia y equipo para ayudarlo a llegar a la identificación correcta.
      Si desea un probador de gemas, estoy seguro de que presidium puede enviar a Venezuela, y también que sus tiendas locales de joyería tienen su marca o herramientas similares para comprar.
      Saludos,
      Tanja

    what are simulated diamonds mean? How do they test on testers?

    • @KaleHello
      @KaleHello 3 роки тому +1

      cubic zirconia is simulated diamond, it is not a diamond at all.

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg  3 роки тому

      Hi, @Pavy415! A simulated Diamond is simply any material that looks like a Diamond but has different properties (and there are many!). These look-alike materials can be either natural gems or synthetic (man-made) but have such distinctively different properties that with the right testing equipment is would be easy to distinguish them from Diamond. Diamonds allow heat to pass through faster than most other materials and this is how the first diamond testers were conceived. Using a diamond tester correctly will certainly help to distinguish diamond from most other materials but NOT from a synthetic Diamond. This is because when a man makes Diamond in a laboratory it is being produced with the same properties as the natural it represents so it will give the same results on the diamond testers. Therefore, on modern Diamond testers today only natural and synthetic diamonds will show as Diamonds but all other simulants will be easily detected as NOT diamond.

      Olá Jefferson! 😄
      Obrigado por entrar em contato. Se você fez alguns testes preliminares em casa que sugerem que você pode ter diamantes, é fundamental obter uma avaliação profissional para confirmar suas descobertas. Embora comprar um testador de diamantes possa ser um bom investimento, se você está apenas procurando testar algumas pedras, você pode considerar a consulta com um laboratório local ou um gemólogo certificado. Profissionais experientes geralmente têm o equipamento necessário e a expertise para realizar testes precisos. Muitos laboratórios locais oferecem serviços de teste verbal sem criar um certificado, mas fornecerão um feedback confiável sobre suas pedras. Desta forma, você pode garantir a autenticidade de suas pedras sem ter que investir em equipamentos especializados

    17:40 it will work only if u put in the correct criteria 🥴

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg  2 роки тому

      Hi Stephen, The Gemoro tester and Ultratester 3+ look really good. I have not had the pleasure to use one yet but I like the look of the tool and also like the option for different languages. My video was produced in collaboration with a Singapore company called Presidium who have produced many good types of gemmological testing equipment over 42 years. I even have one of their first diamond testers which I used for more than 23 years so I know and trust their quality. Re: 17:40 The Diamond screener tool is specifically for checking natural vs synthetic colourless Diamonds. It is only used when the Diamond tester has identified the stone as a Diamond, it will then help to determine if that Diamond is likely to be natural (type 1a) or synthetic. If the result shows blue it is likely to be a type 1a which is natural but the other option (orange light) is likely to be synthetic or an extremely rare Diamond so it is better to send it for further testing. If you put any other gem into this machine it will not give you a meaningful result. I hope this answers your question and thank you for taking the time to watch my video. Wishing you keep safe! Best regards, Tanja

    moissanite is not a simulant

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg  Рік тому

      Hi Geeno, it actually is. Moissanite has a very similar appearance to real diamonds, the material is made of silicon carbide which is crafted to imitate the same features as natural diamonds.
