I am planning to install IUZ or 3UZ for my cruiser 1969 ford mustang. Which engine you would recommend? I am not looking for high horsepower but would enjoy some torque. Also, planning to install the Ford Cobra supercharger in the future. Both full engines can be found relatively cheap and will to search for the best year and configuration. Planning to make it 5 speed manual too using Hilux R155F transmission with 2006 Camry V6 flywheel and clutch ..etc. Any recommendation would help 😊

To summarize Go for a 1UZ for Boost Builds Avoid the 2UZ for any Builds Enjoy the 3UZ For N/A Builds Not that im biased owning a LS430 but i would say the 3uz give the best middle ground between HP/Torque is met by the 3UZ It's the best for ITB's and sounds the best when combined with Equal length headers and a x pipe (maserati 4700 vibes)

I have had a '98 GS400 for the last 18 years, at 230k currently. I just had a second timing belt done. The engine is still as smooth as butter and power is always on tap...Great cars!
You caught the main caps that are 6 bolt, but also one important distinction about the difference between 1UZ heads and 3UZ heads is the flow. 1UZ flow 125cfm per cylinder in stock form which is dismal. 3UZ heads flow 236cfm per cylinder stock form which is over double. You can only make so much power with 125cfm. Even with boost. HRE in NZ got 270cfm out of a ported 1UZ head to make 500WHP N/A. He told me he got over 300cfm out of a 3UZ head and with revised compression ratios could hit ~600WHP N/A with ITB's and good headers.
My classic first car the 1990 Lexus ES250 had the legendary 2VZ-FE. V6 DOHC 160hp 160ft lb torque and ran that son of a gun over 300k with basic maintenance. Piston rings weren't exactly in the best condition towards the end so when going downhill then reaching the bottom of a hill and launching from a flat start it definitely blew a blue puff of smoke but that just gave it character. Vave guides were somehow not leaking. It also had the rare 5 speed manual which I did have to replace the flywheel and clutch which is normal but the synchros were going out from 2nd to 3rd so it was a 2 second shift. Some kids threw a bunch of rocks at it at night and it totalled it out. It was my first car many many years ago and it hurt when I had to replace it, but I traded it in for a 2006 G35s coupe. Kept the shifter knob and will always keep that thing until I loose it.
Damn man can’t believe someone would throw rocks at a car like that and total it, sucks man. I recently got my first car and it has a 3VZ-FE which I’ve heard is a great engine. It only has 52k miles so I hope it lasts as long as yours did.

Great video, Thanks. One thing id like to add is that on the 1uz the switch from non interference to interference was actually in 95 with the increase of compression not when they added vvti in 97. So the only non interference uzs are the 94 and older models.

@@wldmhd The 5.7L is part of the UR Engine family that replaced the UZ family. It consists of the 1UR-FE (4.6L), 2UR-GSE (5.0L), and your 3UR-FE (5.7L).
I've seen people go 500 whp on a stock 1uzfe vvtti but I would not go any higher without bulletproofing the engine a little more, he said 1000hp and that is easily achievable with a 1uzfe vvti if you know what your doing but you will need some sort of forged internals, having said i love my 2000 gs 400 with the 1uzfe vvti it is definitely one of the most reliable and fun engines to build
i read that the 2UZ in the gx470 and the 4runner which are made in Japan have a stronger bottom end than the 2UZ built in the U.S. i would really like your input on this.

Now now men…. The only difference between Japanese made 89-2002 is the piston rods are heavier duty vs. American made there after. As long as you don’t go stick a supercharger in there with a small pulley same thing… but different.
Toyota should have put the 1UZ-FE in the fourth generation Supra. I know why they didn't but that's fine. I've seen plenty of Supras with this swap and there's nothing like a throaty V8 rumble coming from these cars. Hope to build a car with one of these engines one day. (:

I stay away from BMW V8s because of all their problems which are inevitably gonna present themselves...valve stem seals, the valley pan cover gasket, excessive oil consumption, ALL kinds of other engine leaks, and premature engine component failure, rod bearing failure, throttle body actuator on some engines, damn plastic chain guides like who thought that was a good idea (I guess you could replace them with something else besides plastic). Parts are expensive and how they are built and the cars around them they are not DIY friendly. Reportedly N62 is one of the worst.
They dont really stack up like the german ones do. Cause you know, the japanese ones are still in their cars running and the germans are literally stacked up in yards or sheds.

1uz build prior to 9/94 are non interference... after that, still non VVTI, but interference. Difference to look for, non interference have coils whose tower points up, fuel rails are thick block billet... interference 1uz has coils pointing horizontal, fuel rails are cast aluminum.

If an engine with a shorter stroke make hp higher up. Why does the 89 Mustang GT (3 inch) peak at 4200 rpm? The 2011 5.0 GT (3.65 inch) and peak at 6500 rpm.
@@gava7691 Better heads will increase hp but they don't control where the engine make peak hp. Before you say I'm wrong. Think about this. An 89 5.0 made 225 hp @ 4200 rpm. People added superchargers and the engine made 300 hp but it still peaked @ 4200 rpm.
I'm surprised that the internals of the 2uz were bot as strong as the 1uz when it was built for truck and suv applications. Was gonna swap a 2uz into my troopy but looks like 1uz is the way forward
just to make a correction, 1990-1994 1UZ = Non interference. 1995-1997 Non VVTI = interference. 1998+ VVTi = interference. There is tons of confusion on it, but there are the facts. Lexus/toyota can confirm. More years are interference than not.
The lighter rotating assembly they put in for 95 and 96. Thinner rods that aren't good for boost. If boosting and not building the bottom end you want a 89 to 94 1uz
Nisan had two entirely different engine family that competed at this time. U kinda messed upm also Nissan lowerred the power to 278 on the one u refer on paper, to meet gentleman agt in Japan 280max hp. It was over 300 in reality

That first generation of 1UZ was so over built. It's truly an underrated engineering home run. There's not really much negative to be said about it.

The vvti version has a better head, comoression and the cam scissor is closer to the pulley. The only downside is the vvti has weaker rods

Just so you know, the “Terminator Cobra” supercharger is an Eaton M112. It was also used in some Mercedes sports cars and the SVT lighting.

The 90-94 1UZs (big rod engines) were non-interference, the 95+, regardless of vvti or not, are all interference engines.

The 2UZ crank has 1 less main bearing than the 1UZ-3UZ making it impossible use the 4.7 crank so there aren't any "stroker" 3UZ Engines out there.
