    Bit disappointed in this one. I thought this was going to be about focussing specific to using a gimbal - so how to change focus during a shot. It's actually just "put it on manual and turn the dial". The gimbal is irrelevant

      Sameee Jeff. I thought this was going to be a video that talked about focus pulling while using the gimbal. I've tried it a bit but it's tough to get down. I suppose I should get the servo follow focus for my Zhiyun crane and GH5 though.

    I need your help with an issue on my weebill s with my a6300. I like to connect the camera to the gimbal so I can use the focus wheel or hit the record button on the gimbal instead of the camera which is a pain on the a6300 BUT when I do, I lose the monitor signal from the camera to my 7 inch monitor!! I unplug the cable from camera to gimbal and the monitor is back. What am I doing wrong here. I have the camera set to movie mode, but... it does work if I use the P mode or the A mode but I don't want the camera making those choices for me when shooting so I want to be able to shoot manual. Please help me sort this out.

    Josh, I’ve watched a LOT of your videos and have taken just as much from them. Two request for recommendation. What monopod would offer the most stability supporting a Webill 2, Z6II and a 24-70 2.8 when simulating a drone view? Is the Hollyland 300 Pro still considered a rock solid choice today? The 400S Pro lacks mounting options and HDMI loopout.

  • @mineralsound
    @mineralsound 4 роки тому +4

    I see that a moving subject tutorial is coming, but I don't see how that's possible without autofocus. I use manual focus for all my shoots, and the reason I haven't bought a gimbal is because you can't touch the lens without defeating the motors. Only way around that is a remote focus motor, and then you need a control rig, wireless transmitter, external monitor, maybe even a focus puller. And yet autofocus is unusable for anything besides a clean shot with nothing in front of your subject. Do you have any solutions to this predicament?

    • @sergiomartinez5946
      @sergiomartinez5946 4 роки тому +3

      Focusing on a moving object with manual focus is difficult but not impossible.
      First stop down the aperture and if possible add more light to the scene. Doing this will give you a deeper depth of field and make it easier to focus. If you are outside in broad day light this is easier since you can use a combination of ND filters and a closed aperture to get the desired look. If you need shallower depth of field, then put your subject closer to the camera so you can focus on them and make the background more blurry. Of course, this is harder indoors especially if you don't have lights, but there are plenty of videos out there with cheap light solutions.
      Secondly, assuming you are filming a sequence and not doing run and gun, the second is to rehearse the scene and put markers on the ground for your subjects to move to. Make sure you always stay the necessary distance from your subject to stay in focus. It's going to be a bit harder on a gimbal since you are not going to always be 100% moving in the exact distance, but stopping down a bit may help with that.
      Also, not meaning to sound too facetious, my final tip is to just do it! The more you manually focus, the better you will get at it. I would suggest maybe sticking with a fixed focal length (I only own prime lenses and my go to is my MFT 24mm Rokinion Cine Lens) and practice on that lens only for a while. You will start learning muscle memory on how far you need to turn the ring to focus at certain distances and you will be able to do it quickly, even in run and gun situations. Sometimes it takes a few tries but the more you do it, the faster and more accurate you will get at it.

  • @gunlokman
    @gunlokman 3 роки тому +1

    The main message of 'use manual focus more' was gratefully received and I'm going to do just that. Another video that could be useful is suggesting that we all take control of exposure as well. Some of the best clips I've ever got (and stills actually) was when I took care to set exposure for the main subject only. Thank you for helping us out here to get better.

      Distortion can be useful. It can be used to portray nightmares, dream states, the effect of drugs and or alchool etc

    All lenses breathe when focus is changed. Some more than others. Focus peaking is not always red. Professional cameras let you chose a few different colors so that it will show up in different lighting scenarios.
