  • On March 6, 1982, five years after the disappearance of George Helm and Kimo Mitchell in the seas off the island of Kaho'olawe, the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana held a tribute to the two men at 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu.
Representatives from the Helm and Mitchell families along with community members, singers and musicians from Kaua'i, Maui, Moloka'i and Hawai'i island joined their O'ahu compatriots in remembering the legacy of George and Kimo and the actions of many others who worked peaceably to stop the U.S. military bombing of Kaho'olawe.
This video was produced by Na Maka o ka `Aina in 1982. The footage was digitized and preserved in 2011 with support from Hawai`i People's Fund.

I feel Dr. Haunani K Trask heartfelt love for all of us at UH Manoa. My ten years of living in the dorms at UH and hearing first hand of different countries and their military bombing--killing women, children...Haloa.I went to O Kanaloa Kohe Malamalma in 1978 on a Public Law 95-341 access.Walking from Kealaikahiki to Hakioawa Ili and back again in a days time was very deeply pa'a--to give your life's work ethics was my commitment to my ancestors and George Helms purpose and intent of Hui Alaloa

Hell, in recent years I've talked to people who were stationed in HI and have admitted killing unarmed women and children overseas. They are now dealing with the aftermath of their actions and sadly some of them are not even 21 years of age. Very sad.
