  • Canadian Museum of Nature botanist Paul Sokoloff knows a thing or two about plants in extreme environments-including space.
In this video, he reacts to the portrayal of botanists and plants in space films “The Martian”, “Silent Running”, and “Sunshine”, as well as in episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. Plants can provide food, aesthetic value, and essential oxygen on space expeditions-but sometimes human foibles get in the way of botanical success.

    The Martian 4:30
    Sunshine 8:54
    Silent Running 11:31
