I love the 6G2 circuit. I ponied up the money to buy the Chris Stapleton edition where it is fitted with a 12" Eminence. This amp made me realize how gainy Fender amps can be, the impact pickups have on tone (when not a modern style amp), what a good tremolo sounds like, and how an amp at 10 with guitar volume at 3 sounds much better than the other way around. Definitely a favorite of mine
Just played my '62 Fender Brownface Princeton through a Marshall '73 fullstack (that's a total of 8x12" Celestion speakers with Pulsonic cones) and the result was just ridiculous in the best possible way. Legendary American tone fed through a wall of English speakers = best of both worlds. You must try it out Johan! Thanks for another great video and all the best from Finland! :)
Hey stop showing the world the awesome amps! I am trying to find one used for a decent price, but now that you showed everyone these amazing tones I'll have a lot more competition. Sounds killer as always, really hope to get my hands on one of these some day.
Thanks man, glad to hear it! I think refinished versions with swapped speakers go for reasonable money, and you can find a later version of Oxford 10J4 at a reasonable price on eBay or reverb. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn I have seen a few come and go like that. I am also looking at Allen Amps Hot Fudge, as it is a pretty direct clone of the 6g2 with bigger transformers.
@@john808welk I just spotted one for $1200. That seems like a good alternative in today's boutique market. Thanks for the heads up. Not sure I'll be able to get this one before it's gone but I'm definitely going to try.
Nothing better than getting an old Fender, opening up the chassis and finding it's completely loaded with the _BLUE_ Astron caps and not the yellow ones. I ceased the opportunity to purchase a brown face, '61 Tremolux. The first circuit change after the el84 version (basically the same circuit and 8ohm tranny of the el84 version but set up for 6v6 - the 6G9-A circuit before the 6G9-AB). Great amp but when I opened the chassis; only 2 blue Astron's and and 10 yellow. Which, of course, all the yellows needed replacing and _of course,_ the blues were just fine even 60 years later. This Princeton sounds absolutely fantastic. I can't decide which I want more; a brown face Princeton or Bassman. I guess it'll come down to whichever the universe makes available to me first. Fantastic and useful video as always Johan! We appreciate you.
These Princeton's are getting very rare these days I would buy vintage and restore IMO I purchased a pricey new amp and it blew up in a matter of months
Johan; I’ve had a brown Princeton since 1966. I bought it from my neighbour across the street. Replace the filter caps/ can, put a GZ34 recto & pair of 6L6’s in it and a 12” speaker! You’ll have a killer Princeton!
I was waiting for cinnamon girl but stayed astonished at the room dynamics. As close to running my Chris Stapleton wide open as I'm able right now. Thanx Johan.
Cool demo for a classic guitar amp. The 6G2 Princeton is a great amp for most studio tracking duties though I prefer the 6G3 Deluxe or 6G9A Tremolux(8 ohm head)a bit more for recording. The 6G3 Deluxe has a bit more hair to its sound. They were a favorite of Billy Gibbons on the early ZZ Top recordings. The 6G9A Tremolux is just a joyous guitar amp. It's basically the same amp as a 6G11 Vibrolux combo like Mark Knopfler is famous for using on many Dire Straits recordings. I am in the camp that the early tolex 6G Fender amps are the best that were ever conceived in Fullerton, Calif. Another killer recording amp from the LA area are the Magnatone 213/413 style amps.
For me, that extra "oomph" in low mids in brownface amps is what won me over black/silverface amps. Coupled with a Celestion Greenback like you did in the billy gibbons vid, it's tone heaven for me. Like sweet molten chocolate.
Since I bought mine in ‘96, I am happy 😁. To my ears, it is the greatest Strat amp ever, but works splendidly with just any guitar. There exists ONE reverb pedal that’s just ideal for it (I resold my ‘63 tank which I found too clumsy to use) but I will not disclose what it is as it is no longer made, and there are only few on Reverb!
The brown Princeton 6G2 is very close to the Tweed Harvard 5F10. Just a tremolo added and higher (10-15V) B+ voltage. These amps are beautiful, as the Brown Deluxe if you like bluesy sound.
That sounds amazing! The American-voiced speaker distortion is really growing on me... but I suspect it might sound even better to my ears through a 4x12 with Greenbacks, and take on a more articulate Marshallesque tone.
Johan, great video. We've built 6 of these (Lucas Miles) down here in melbourne, and they've been a prickly amp to build due to different variations of components and a schematic that gives you a bum steer. I had a tuxedo model for analysis and that sounded ice picky like others i've heard on UA-cam demos. But your sounds nicely balanced. Its also the first one I've seen with the 25uf 25v bypass capacitors in the front end. Others I've seen have 100uf on the cathodes to curb the trebles. What Im curious about is the pwr trans secondary voltages on that amp you demo'd .The tuxedo I trialled had 350-0-350 ....way to hot. The people at Mercury Mags say 290-0-290 is where its at, and I've tried this and its alot better. Just curious if you did any measurements. Cheers
Very coolll as usual Johan ! I’m taking out my 62’ stapleton this saturday with my blues jr III pro/guitar/shop édition in dual (stéréo style) for a gig at a local bar down home I can’t wait to crank these Amps to the sweet spot with the f holes on the 335 and the thin falcon pushing air Like crazy .... I've had a 1963 Princeton for quite a few years now. It had been modified with a master volume by a previous owner, but I had an amp technician return it to it's original specs. I bought a Boss reverb pedal for this amp too, which instantly gives it the sound of later Fender amps. It's nice to know that it's such a highly regarded amp.
@@graftongodofmemes Yes it does, but I don't do that. I prefer clean, with just a little bit of gain for warmth. I find Marshall amps to have the best sound for my needs. I don't use them for the overdrive, but for the warm clean tone.
Magical Tone guess I'm gonna melt away. Love to have a Princeton since a Twin and a JCM 800 are more for stage or stadium use ;-) and an Blackstar HT5 doesn't gimme that tone. Thanks Johan
Amazingly clean / well maintained amp, with a spectacular sound. I cannot believe it has the original filter caps and they aren't leaking. They don't look to be restuffed.
Oh wow, awesome, as usual Johan! (great visuals as well!) As a Canadian amp guy I know once said, "Forget sending stuff to Mars man, this is where technology peaked!" I swore I read once that Clapton & Duane Allman used Princetons like these to track the "Layla" record (or was it Champs? Both?). Saw Lucinda Williams in an intimate auditorium performance (no band), and guitarist Doug Pettibone was playing a Gretsch and a LP Jr. (Strat too, I think) through one of these...impeccable tone.
What a great thing to wake up to. Thanks! Perfectly balanced. That Strat is so soulful. At least when you play it. It will probably sound like a truck grinding gears in my flabby hands.
Serial number range for these from 100 to 9900. That means there’s less than 9800 out there in the wild for players to find. I own one of the first 1800 made, which is crazy to think! I’m surprised that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing more than one of these in person.
