Kanan Devi: A real life Cinderella story
Kanan Devi was among the early singing stars in undivided India. Her singing style, usually in rapid tempo, was behind some of the biggest hits of New Theatres.
Born Kananbala in 1916, her father, Ratan Chandra Das passed away when she was only five. Her mother, Rajbala Devi raised her amidst severe hardship. For a meager remuneration Kanan made her debut as a child actress with the movie Joydev (1926).
Kanan got her first break in films as a lead actress, with Jorbaraat (1931) directed by Jyotish Banerjee. She was only 15 then. PC Barua was unable to enlist her for the role of Paro in Devdas (1935) but she played the lead in his Mukti (1937).
An untrained singer when she stepped into the film-zone, she trained briefly under Ustad Allah Rakha in Lucknow. She was employed as a singer at Megaphone Gramophone Company, receiving further training from Bhishmadev Chatterjee. She later mastered Rabindra Sangeet with Anadi Dastidar.
Mukti made Kanan a star and led to a fruitful association with New Theaters.
The success of Bidyapati (Bangla)/Vidyapati (Hindi) (1937) in which she demonstrated perhaps her finest performance, propelled her to the crest of stardom.
Kanan Devi remained the top star of New Theatres till she resigned in 1941 and began to freelance in Hindi and Bangla films. Jawab the following year saw perhaps her biggest ever hit song Toofan Mail, which is hummed by many to this date.
Kanan Devi turned producer with Shrimati Pics in 1949 and launched the film Ananya. Her own productions were mainly based on Sarat Chandra stories and were directed by her husband Haridas Bhattacharya.
Kanan Devi's last film was Indranath Srikanta O Annadadidi (1959). She wrote an autobiography Shobarey Ami Nomi (1973) and in 1977, Kanan Devi, the then considered 'first lady of Bangla Films' was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award for her contribution to Indian cinema. She also worked as President of the Mahila Shilpi Mahal, an organisation that helps aged and needy female artistes of yesteryear's.
The legendary diva passed away on July 17, 1992 but her legacy remain alive in the heart of millions.

During 1930s to '50s it was like a proverb in the music arena that "No matter where and how much you try, in the end you will have to go to Kamal Das Gupta to find success." Among many artistes who found recognition through Kamal Das Gupta's compositions were Juthika Roy, Jogonmoy Mitra, Shanta Apté, Hemant Mukherjee, Talat Mahmood, Shubhalakshmi, K. Mallik, Indubala, Angurbala, Mrinal Kanti, Satya Chowdhury and of course Feroza Begum, the finest Nazrul Sangeet artiste. The total number of songs composed by him is an astonishing number of over 8000 of which about 400 are Nazrul songs.

I just wanted to check this song because accidentally I was humming this song and I remember that this song was a title of some doordarshan series in mid 90s.
Some how after watching on UA-cam I feel that we didn't make any progress after British left us, the train system during that time was so brilliant that even today we rely and match that old speed. Actually I feel we were taught wrong history and British rule was not that bad. They didn't forcefully converted us, nor did they destroyed our temples or culture. May be they ruled better with less corruption because they didn't follow the secular agenda, caste reservation. Hence all previous engineers, lawyers, doctors and respective fields person got their job on basis of their calibre, talent and merits

If we put aside their cultural side, they were far developed than us, and when we say develop not in sense of dress, or products but buildings like victoria memorial, city design like kolkata, bridges like hoogly, transport services like train which we are still not able to evolve much. They started to take exam for every post like we do for jee neet upsc and we are still one step down to them due to reservation. British had left so many good things for us too, only their ruling policy was bad for indians.

Truely beautiful song 🎵 😍
When I was a child my mother used to sing this song and O chand chup na jana both songs of Kanan Devi. I am already 80 year old and brings back loving memories of my mother. - my grandfather
🙏
So relaxing 🤗
Pure melody.
The lyrics are so profound, aren't they? Reminds me of Mohammad Rafi's 'Basti basti parbat parbat gaata jaaye banjara...' from 'Railway Platform'
Aaj se Railway is Train ko bad kar rahi hai
Superb rhythm and lyric describes life.👌👍
Love the longing, anticipation in Kansas Devi's face towards the end.
Here are the lyrics:
Toofan mail,
Duniya yeh duniya toofan mail
Iske pahiye zor se chalte
Aur apna rasta taye karte
Jayane is-se kaam nikalen
Bacche samjhen khel toofan mail
Koi kahan ka ticket kataata
Ek hai aata ek hai jaata
Sabhi musafir bichhad jayenge
Pal bhar ka hai mail toofan mail
Duniya yeh duniya toofan mail
Jo jitni poonji hai rakhte
Woh utna safar hai karte
Jeevan ka hai bhaidh batati
Gyani ko yeh rail toofan mail
Duniya yeh duniya toofan mail.

My childhood memories 😍
Fantastic singing. I vaguely remember seeing the movie. I remember Smt. Kanan देवी sitting in the train compartment and singing this song with the rhythm of the Loco noise. Those days the train, Toofan Mail was THE FASTEST train connecting Delhi and Calcutta taking nearly 26 hours to complete the journey. Hene the name Toofan Mail. It my misfortune that I could not view the original clip.... 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Makhmali aawaj ki dhani kanan devi
Kya Geet ke Shabda Hain Pandit Madhurji, aur Kya wiasehi [Madhur] awaaz mein Kanan Deviji ne Khoobi se Gaaya Hai aur Sangeet wah kya "Kamal" hai Das Guptaji They are all lost in oblivion. Jo Jitani Poonji hai Rakhata Uusi Musafir Safara Woh Karata, Jeevan ka ye Khel , Toofan Mail, Wah Lajawaab, Jeevan ki Sachhai ko kya khoobi se Geet mein Dhala Hai. Ise Mukkarar bhi nahin kehe shakte. Hath se gayee hui wohi baazi kabhi wapas nahin aayi hai.
I have this picture Jawab while i was 12 years boy.
I means i had seen this picture.
Nice to hear, so sweet & melodious.
+Jagjit Singh Ishar .. Thanks Jagjit Singh ji ! for sharing the best of legendary Kanan Devi !
I am also
me jab 4 sal ka tha jab ye gramophone pe suna tha ye mere bachpan ki yad se juda hua hai anmol geet
Old classic. But strangely, the title and lyrics are wrongly translated. It is “Toofan Mein” NOT Toofan Mail.
“Toofan mein duniya yeh duniya “ makes sense.
You are doing a yeomen's service to the cause of our hindi cinema music....the train and trend should not stop....
Onar. Lalpar. Shareepara. Rupta. Chokhe vase..ma. Saraswati. Pronam. Devi pronam. Anek. Dhyandan..korechhen.. aparupa.
It is always a pleasure to listen Kanan devi. She sings with a magically soothing voice.
wonderful
What a clever and pleasant wordings "Toofan Mail"! Kanan Devis classical voice, combined with the train's movement, creates an unusal atmosphere.
বাল্যকালে গানটি বাংলা ভার্সনে শুনেছি কিন্তু হিন্দী ভার্সনে কখনো শুনা হয়নি।
All are travellers in the world with exit n entrances. Embraced me with melody n symphony this song of Kanan Devi. Her elegance makes me nostalgic
of charms my mother left behind.
Immortal Kanan Devi who was Kanan Bala of young age. I encourage all here to hear every one of her songs including those in Bengali, and ones with K L Saigal. Tum Bina Kal Na lage, hamari jaaj chhipao, and many more. Fact that she acted in movies and sang makes her unique. She did many charitable acts. Once ‘so called a devdasi’ she suffered in early days, but focused only on her work as singer and an actor made her the fame she deserves.
Truly said,
thanks Dilip Bhai ! for sharing my small tribute to our legendary artistes .

please upload the Bengali version of this song. thank you this is a very good song.
Zindagi ke safar ko kis khoobsoorti se gaane ke roop main pesh kiya hay. radio days main suna tha. dil par naqsh ho gaya tha. kya surili awaz hay, kiya dilkash dhun hay aur kia aafaqi shaeri hay, sun kar dil hi naheen bharta. bas aik iltija hay keh is sangeet ko "bhoola bisra" na kahain kiyunkeh ise aap sun rahe hain.

This song first listened in 1974 in vivdh bharathi on Saturday, the program was conducted by actor SHREE RAM LAGOO.. Since then I like this song
Wanted to listen to this song.🙏 I made it

kanan devi was among the first female playback singers along with parul ghosh.those charm and nostalgia will never return
Excellent voice, super song. those days ,there were no bars on the train windows, it reminds me of seeing men jump in & out of the compartments though the windows '.. I have seen my Dad doing so. then too they were over crowded. KEEP THIS VIDEO FOR EVER.

Kanan Devi had a great voice! Beautiful Song! Thanks.
Is this first train song of bollywood?
No, second. First was Ayi Bahar Aaj Aayi Bahar by Pankaj Mullick from Doctor (1941).
