Zindagi (The Life) is a 1940 Hindi-language film, directed by Pramathesh Barua and produced by Birendranath Sircar. Starring K. L. Saigal, Jamuna Barua, Pahari Sanyal, Shyam Laha, Sitara Devi, and Nemo,it revolves around Ratan, an unemployed university graduate, and his relationship with Shrimati, who is on the run from her cruel husband.
Earning ₹5.5 million net (valued at about ₹39.78 crore in 2009), Zindagi was the highest grossing Indian film at the time of its release, before its record was broken by Khazanchi in 1941.
The film has been described as one of Barua's "most beautiful films, and his last for New Theatres".It was the last film by Barua for New Theatres.Barua later married Jamuna as his second wife.This film was remade into Bengali as Priyo Bandhabi in 1943 directed By Soumen Mukherjee. No copy of the film is known to exist, making it a lost film..
Storyline:-
The movie is about gambling bum named Ratan (K.L. Saigal) who runs into the beautiful Shrimati (Jamuna Barua), an errant wife of an abusive husband.
In a park, the vagabond gambler Ratan (Saigal) encounters Shrimati (Jamuna) who has escaped from her brutal husband. They soon team up and start begging for donations for a fake charity. With the money, they rent an apartment and live together until Shrimatis father dies and she inherits his wealth. Feeling like she must atone for her sins, she devotes herself to social work and adopts an orphan named Lakhia, but he discovers that he cannot live without her, while she, feeling she must pay for her guilty life, rejects him. To ensure a happy ending, the two meet again as though on the threshold of a new afterlife..

An advertisement of Zindagi compares Gothe and Voltaire's notions of life with that of Baura's.
It was a film that not only challenged social mores but also explored the complexities and consequent disillusionment of an unusual platonic relationship between an unmarried couple living together. Not surprisingly, it created quite a stir upon its release. The film contains the evergreen Saigal song ‘So jaa rajkumari, so jaa’.
Critical reception..
Zindagi generally received positive reviews for critics. The Bombay Chronicle lauded the film for Pankaj Mullick's "divine music", two songs of Segal that are "the soul of melody and pathos," the "cynical" humour of the first half of the film and the "subtle, heart-wrenching" emotionalism of the second half. They also praised the "haunting" performance of Jamuna.
Filmindia called the film an "all smoke" and described it as generally "too intellectual" for the average audience.
Bhagwan Das Garga writes, "The plot is slight but Barua's nuanced characterization and wealth of observation makes it a richly rewarding work."
Controversies....
In a frame sequence of the 1939 film Aadmi by V. Shantaram, which was simultaneously released along with Zindagi, the romantic "pessimism" of Barua was caricatured. According to Garga, this incident provided enough "grist" for the news media.An unnamed Gujarati weekly remarked, "Shantaram's eye is on life, Barua's on death."Jamil Ansari, a critic, strongly defended Zindagi. Khwaja Ahmad Abbas compared the two films and wrote.
The music composer was Pankaj Mullick with lyrics by Kidar Sharma and Arzu Lucknavi.
One of the memorable songs from the film was "So Ja Rajkumari Soja". This lullaby was made famous in this film.

I'm here from "kiranay" by Shafeeq Rahman, a remarkable masterpiece of urdu literature. It was written in 1940 and after recently reading it I couldn't resist searching for this song which was so beautifully depicted in the book. This song really has some "jaadu" in it and makes the book's scene a hundred times better!!! I'm only 16 yet can't help fall in love with this song and that book!!

is a collection light-hearted short stories in Urdu written by Shafeeq-ur-Rehman, a medical doctor who had joined the Medical Corps of the (British) Indian Army during WW2. He later retired as a major-general of the AMC in Pakistan Army.
He was one of the foremost writers, along with Kanhiyya Lal Kapoor, of humorous stories and essays in Urdu in the 1940s era.

Great personality. I had many hobbies, liked old movies from 1934 onwards and as time passed it brought many changes in taste and hobbies. But only Saigal remained. Hearing him from around age of 7(1954) till now and he is more like a family member.

My uncle used to sing this song in the early 1940s. I was only 6 or 7. This tune can also be played on Nadaswaram (the pipe instrument used in South India). There were wedding processions going along the street where we lived in the 40s & 50s with the nadaswaram band playing this tune, surprisingly so sweet. Fond memories!
