    I like it HOWEVER if you don't mind a little bit of criticism, with how you made it, you made that hand now useless in a 'fight', especially in the era it was made for I.E. medieval times, think about it, you go to pull your sword out only to not be able to because you have a handle in your hand holding those blades on, you can semi block with those but honestly, not for long, especially against a long sword, that hand can no longer be used for anything, can't grasp a tree branch to pull yourself up, nothing, hell, you can't even straighten your hand in salute or anything and that's problematic as well.
    Now for the bright side, you could have made it without the bar to hold onto in your hand so your hand is 'free' to grab ahold of things and just welded the blades to the wraps without it going all the way around the hand into the hand, get rid of the bend at the fingers forcing your hand into a fist so your hand can straighten out, perhaps make individual steel plates for each joint of the fingers and connect them with chain mail or something so you can straighten and bend your hand at whim, be able to hold a sword as well but most important thing in the world, make it for the OFF-HAND so that if you want to, can draw with one hand(right) and fight with the sword with your right hand and be able to incorporate that weapon into your fighting style and compliment the sword fighting style, that would be the ideal thing, make the forearm section hard so can serve as a type of shield, wow, just thinking about the possibilities of this weapon when on the offhand and having it strong enough to be used as a shield and able to cut with a swipe of the hand, freakin awesome.
    I hope you don't think I am putting your creation down, I am not, I like what you created, and only being your third attempt at making a bladed weapon, that's a big project and an awesome job you did, I study things and how to make them better, I am good at what I do and the things I mentioned would make that maybe one of the most dangerous styles of Defensive weapons I think I have ever seen.

    • @PJTForging
      @PJTForging  Рік тому

      Oh man... I thought you said a LITTLE criticism! 😅
      Jokes aside, I actually really appreciate comments like these. There's no greater compliment than knowing you obviously put a lot of effort thinking about how to practically improve it, and you've taken the time to write that out as you feel committed to seeing those changes hopefully implemented.
      I think practically, you raise some very good points; and if this were a functional weapon, I would definitely agree. However I suppose I would point out that this is a fantasy weapon, which if the fantasy genre has taught us anything is that they are generally HORRIBLY impractical. 😂
      However rest assured if I survive a near apocalyptic event, and I am left with this thing trying to scramble up a tree for survival; I will remember this comment, and rue the knowledge that the reason I'm going to fail and probably die because I didn't give myself articulating fingers and an open hand grip! 😅
      Cheers!

    I do like what you ended up with in the end, not sure if it’s fully into that fantasy category as it is more historical than fantasy but have to say it’s one of the most functional ones I’ve seen yet. I do wonder why you didn’t line it with sheepskin fleece or something like that to protect the user

    • @PJTForging
      @PJTForging  Рік тому +1

      It's fantasy because, to my knowledge at least, there are no historical examples of this. Yes there are historical gaunlets, and yes there are historical tekko Kagi, but as far as I am aware, there was never a combined version in this style; otherwise an argument could be made that no knives can be fantasy, as there are plenty of historical examples of knives.
      I did consider lining it, but surprisingly, it wasn't necessary. It fit very well and comfortably to my arm, so I didn't feel the need.

  • @peltiereric6497
    @peltiereric6497 Рік тому

    Cu- Mai doesn’t mean 9 Layer in Japanese or whatever nonsense you said. Cu-Mai is Cu for the element Copper and traditional Cu-Mai blades are 5 Layers 3 steel and 2 copper although some people will do more layers. Basically Cu-Mai is just Go-Mai which is standard 5 layer steel but Cu-Mai uses Copper for 2 layers

    • @PJTForging
      @PJTForging  Рік тому +1

      Ku/Kyu Mai means 9 layers. Same as Go Mai is 5 layers, and San Mai is 3. It is still a Cu Mai regardless, as yes it contains copper. What I was on about was reducing the number of layers I was including.

    If I wasnt to late to vote, this would have my vote.
    Lots of other amazing stuff in the challenge but this was by far the coolest and interesting to me, maybe its the blacksmith in me (that mostly do practical objects) that makes this so cool. Very nice work.

    Love it! The dirty aesthetic really works well. Would be a great gladiatorial weapon (looks cool, but isn't the most effective) but those jagged edges must catch on EVERYTHING - how much has it made you bleed so far?

      Surprisingly, the edges actually don't catch much on things (after I rolled most of them over). The only time I cut myself on this build was when I intelligently decided to pick it up by the claw shortly after I sharpened it. 😅

    I'm not 100%, but I for keeping the blades straight, would steel bailing wire have worked in place of a clamp?
    The real thick stuff, so you could twist it nice and tight and not lose a clamp?

    • @PJTForging

      Possibly, but I think there may still be too much flex in the wire. The clamp was a crappy cheap one anyway, and is currently still sat in the bottom of the quench tank. 😅

    I always assumed the "Cu" in Cu mai was for copper.
    Looks awesome, though I think in an effort to avoid making a knuckleduster, you may have made a handclaw. Which is also illegal. Because this stupid country gets scared by martial arts movies no matter how impractical those weapons are when you can just go into any garden store and buy a billhook if you want something deadly and usable.

    • @PJTForging
      @PJTForging  Рік тому

      I think the term Cu Mai is used synonymously with copper as well to be fair. I wonder if there's an element of coincidence in the naming. Nine in Japanese is Ku or Kyu, but when translating to English, they can often change the spelling slightly, like 'Nunchucks' and 'Nunchaku'. So 'Ku' can be 'Cu'. In the same way if someone is making a San Mai knife, it is a three layer knife, San being Japanese for three. All 'Mai' means, is a unit of counting, so San Mai=three count/layer, Cu Mai=Nine Count/Layer. Doesn't make much sense as 'Copper count', but I guess 'copper layer' kinda works. These days I think it's just used to indicate any number layer so long as it's containing copper. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @DonsArtnGames
      @DonsArtnGames Рік тому

      @@PJTForging I'm putting my money on it started as "nine layer" and then someone said, "hmm... what a coincidence... what if I put copper as a few layers...?"

    I think the plate between the hand and arm should have been leather so you can move your hand more

    • @PJTForging
      @PJTForging  Рік тому

      I did consider this/similar. However I actually kinda wanted to limit the movement a bit. With the leverage that would be felt by hitting things with the claws during a full swing, I wanted the wrist to be quite robust; it's also the reason I moved the hinge back a bit further, to just behind my actual wrist joint. There was some method to the madness. 😅
