O Auto da Compadecida is a comedy film, a Brazilian classic. This film tells about the adventures of João Grilo and Chicó, two poor men who live in a region of scarcity in northeastern Brazil. They scam to survive. They are always deceiving the people of a small village with crazy ideas and absurd lies. Get ready to laugh, get emotional and experience a different style of comedy than usual. This film also features the great actress Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station).

React to live shows and TV shows. They are like “national heroes”. Everyone likes them.

Yes! "CARANDIRU" is a movie realeased in 2003, directed by Hector Babenco. The film was based on a ACTUAL MASSACRE ocurred in october, 1992, perpetrated by officers and soldiers of the São Paulo State Military Police (PMESP - a kind of gendarmerie), when, after a prisioners rebellion, the PMESP invaded the complex and killed 111 interns, most of them unarmed and surrended, at point blank. The movie is based on the book of Drausio Varella, one of the most famous and acclaimed medical doctors (physician) on the country, that worked for years as a doctor in the complex. Mostof the PMESP officers and soldiers involved in the massacre faced trial but where never arrested.
A Dog’s Will might be a harsh watch for a foreigner because it’s a Brazilian comedy with very STRONG regionalism so a lot of the humor might not be understood by outsiders. It’s very loved by Brazilians exactly for this though, for being extremely Brazilian.
Good points, and it's really frustrating to see brazilians keeping to point it out with so much enthusiasm when those cultural differences meeting high expectations can ruin the experience, specially for non portuguese speaker foreigners. In addition to all of that, I might say some knowledge on catholicism and religious references may also be required sometimes.
"Tim Maia" and "ELis" are two great movies about huge beloved brazilian singers, respectively Tim Maia and Elis Regina. "Lisbela e o Prisioneiro" is another delicious movie, another comedy setted in the Northeastern Brazil of the start of the 20th century.
I feel the need to explain the skull and teeth scene. In the midst of so much barbarity, it seems like it's just an act of cruelty for him to be pulling out his teeth as if he were collecting them from the reporter's already burned skull. But the teeth in the dental arch are used to identify bodies when something occurs that prevents visual identification. So, the corrupt policeman rips them out so that even if they find the bones, it cannot be said that they belonged to the reporter.
I don’t know if someone already commented about it in here, but that crazy TV presenter was based of a real Brazilian presenter (Wagner Montes) that acted just like the character! Crazy, I know 🤣
At 4:17 it is a real episode, when Fernandinho Beiramar, at the time the biggest drug dealer in Brazil, bought the key to the cell of drug dealer UÊ, who had committed treason. Uê pretended that he had been kidnapped by the police and needed to pay a ransom, the person who came to his aid was a drug dealer called Orlando Jogador (Jogador is like a "Player"). In the ambush carried out by Uê, all of his men killed Orlando and his companions in the back. Beiramar avenged Orlando and consolidated himself as the leader of Comando Vermelho, the largest faction in Brazil at that time.
brother, I'm Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro (from Rio de Janeiro) and I saw that there was a genuine reaction, and the reality is even more cruel, but we live for better days and I believe they will come, and a film portrays openness, but there are corrupt and good police officers, every day I trust bandits more, the BOPE, only looks for the bad ones, and the good ones end up safe, as for the conventional police, there are good men but some lead residents or people to the end of life, I have become another follower of yours. , from Brazil
It’s interesting to see how you’re the one who saw the movie how it was intended to be. And in the second movie you still looking at Bope with suspicious about their morality. The Nascimento character was supposed to be the villain but the population tired of being robbed and deleted didn’t felt that way. You can see the representation of this in the scene in the restaurant, where Nascimento was supposed to be trashed but it backfired because the population saw him as hero. This really happened the streets. Bope also has a documentary. You could take a look or even react to it. (Don’t let us out 😂 )
Everything you see in this movie happens in Rio until this day. The characters are based in real people. The riot in the beginning happened in 2002. The militia was formed by former police and “delete” squads to keep the criminals away from their neighborhoods. But it turned in a criminal organization with a lot of power inside the political scene of Rio. The Fraga character was based on Freixo, the last scene happened in what was called CPI against the Militias where a lot of people got arrested. The dude dancing in the news channel was inspired by a man called Wagner Montes. He used to make dances when criminals was deleted. People claim he was affiliated with the militias. Nascimento character is based on Capitão Pimentel. The Mathias character is based in a real dude and he looks just like him. I believe his name is Batista. Today the militais controls the majority of Rio and they got mixed with trafficking groups. Another good movie is Parada 174.
6:40 its actually a metaphor indeed. meaning that this quick shot resulted in the whole shit show that was portraited along the movie: he being promoted to office, matias imprisonment, he (and matias) supporting bope at the operations which helped the militia take over those areas, matias death, the militia shooting his son when targeting his deputy step-father, all of it started with that single bullet at the prison riot)
Man. There’s a movie called Alto da compadecida (A Dogs Will). This movie is very popular in Brazil. It shows other parts of Brazil far from the well known parts of the country and in a different time. Outside of the main cities. It’s a good movie to understand how big and diverse Brazil is. A masterpiece to say the truth. I believe you gonna be the first person to react to this movie in English.

You need to watch the classic The Man Who Copied (O homem que copiava)(2003). It's a beautiful and intriguing novel, it's impossible not to like it, you'll be moved.
You should watch Carandiru - the Movie - Brazilian MD Drauzio Varella starts AIDS prevention in Brazil's largest prison, Carandiru in São Paulo, where the population is nearly double its 4,000 maximum. Doc learns from experience and the tragic stories of hideous crimes which landed scum there and passionate dramas adding otherwise decent people. Just when he believes to leave the prisoners happy with a soccer tournament, a silly clothing-line argument kick-starts a politically opportune revolt repression.
Carandiru movie is about a real happenings. When he says he doesn't want another Carandiru, he is talking about the slau_ghter that happened there. By the way, the São Paulo state Police is during an operation that is the biggest slaug-ther since Carandiru. Unfortunatly, sadly, these movies are still too much real. What you mentioned about the first film’s moral being not clear is real. And maybe this is why it became so much more popular than this one. Most of the audience thought it was a message endorsing the way law enforcement works in Rio but the film actually criticizes it. This second film makes it more clear.
The movie characters represents part of a big discussion here in Brazil. The left wing wich most of the opinion is held by law professors, academic researchers on this subject, etc. Fraga represents folks that state that most of the huge prisional system in Brazil (4th largest in the world) is mostly compoused by crimes related to poverty, thus with large and strong public policies to reduce poverty, higher investments in education is the way to solve the urban violence. His carachter was inspired in a politician called Marcelo Freixo. On the other hand, the military police (MP in the movie) is admired by right wing folks and Nascimento represents the idea to confront crime directly using force and to encarcerate until it weakens the organized crime and solves the problem. This carachter is inspired by a former BOPE captain called Rodrigo Pimentel. Altough different ideas, both ideologies goal is to put an end into corruption in politics, as it's considered the root of the problems. The real life guys, Freixo and Pimentel are friends and they both diverge ideas on the politcal spectrum. Freixo's brother was killed by militia and he indeed conducted a formal investigation to identify the militia leaders through a CPI. Pimentel lost many police officers and friends in direct confront with crime. The goal of the film is one recognizing the other and joining together to deal with the subject, instead being on the opposite sides...
