Rescue of a neglected donkey found abandoned in a field

- Meribelle is one of the thousands of donkeys used and abused in Greece, mistreated and dumped as if they are not living animals. She was found in that field, next to trash, without food or water, by a SCARS volunteer, and she was rescued (actually bought from her owner who dumped her - sometimes that's the easiest way, especially for equines that are considered objects by the Greek law) She had been neglected for years. She is 18 years old and her legs are in terrible condition, her hooves full of fungus and in the beginning she coulcn't be touched in any other place than her head, because apparently she had been consistently beaten and overworked. She is now as happy as she ever was, she trusts more and more, she is curious, playful, funny, and she is revealing her amazing donkey character. Her rescuers and foster parents, Iro and Andreas are mainly dog and cat rescuers, but they didn't hesitate to take in Meribelle, and are learning how to care for her and help her become healthy and happy once again.

What a lovely donkey, love her markings. You would think that if you use an animal for "work" that you would treat that animal so well and they would want for nothing as they are making your business money transporting product. But ... I have seen nothing but neglect and am so very sad and yes even angry at how these wonderful animals are being treated not only in Greece but other parts of the world too. Abuse. Neglect. Never knowing a loving touch. Not a way I would want to live. Thank you for rescuing Meribelle, she is worth every penny. :D

There are probably thousands of tourists that don't realise how those poor Donkeys are treated once they leave ,they don't see everything, or if they have, let's all start helping them if we can in our own way.Just by bringing awareness.

A friend of mine just got back from Greece and so first hand the abuse the donkeys suffer. I asked her if she rode one in Santoria and she said absolutely no way would she add to their misery. Monterey County in California is exceptionally well endowed with animal shelters for all animals. We are so blessed here to have companies and people of means who donate to animals.

Donkeys really are adorable creatures. They are very intelligent and once they trust you, they can become a lifelong friend. And I recognized a lady in this video from the Takis Shelter videos!

If I had the space there's no doubt I'd have a donkey...a rescued donkey. In too many vids I see them carrying these ungodly heavy loads on their backs for cruel 'owners'. So damn wrong.
