- It’s Barry’s release day!
You may remember Barry, the donkey, who we rescued in late August along with Ruby, the goat. They were found wandering the streets after being abandoned by their “owner” who was sent to jail. If we weren’t able to take Barry and Ruby, they were going to be euthanized as they couldn’t be left roaming the streets and nobody else came to claim them.
As it was the middle of summer, we were not able to have Barry gelded until last month, when the risk of infection was lower due to there being less flies.
This means that Barry has lived with the goats since coming to the sanctuary. He has been out for walks on the lead rope and met the other donkeys through the fence but today was his first proper day exploring the sanctuary!

It is such a beautiful thing, it is an honor to have the privilege to see him go from pictures of a donkey with sunburn on his nose, to him nibbling grass, and running around free as he should be.

The way he's hanging around the horses, I would say he's been brought up around them & that's why he keeps going back to them. Even the horses are liking him even thou they are curious animals, they are not chasing him away in this video. It's so lovely to see him out now & running around so happy & free in his life with you two looking after him ❤

Oh! that was joyful to watch! Those horses knew the significance of the moment of freedom for Barry. They were so uplifted by it. The more I see animals interacting the more I am in awe of the creator. I love animals sooooo much

What a beautiful video. Barry got into his stride once he realized he was allowed out. I like the ways the dogs kept an eye on Barry when he was running about. Guys, Horses, Donkeys and all the animals on the Ridge, you are all so great.
I have to say that you could literally see Barry leaping for joy at his freedom! What a character he is... and hopefully over the coming months, they will all learn to play well together.
My face is still beaming watching Barry have his first day of freedom. I've never seen a donkey have zoomies, I thought it was only for dogs 😂 This is the life Barry, you enjoy every moment you beautiful boy 💞 YES!!

Bless him, I think he was laughing at the horses saying 'haha, I have freedom and you are stuck in there', then it all changed.

Well, for Day 1 of Barry’s release, it seems it was semi successful. I guess it’ll just take some more time. Thank you for sharing this video. May Barry and the other donkeys have better and better days as you continue to introduce Barry into the sanctuary. You two are wonderful people. ❤️

Barry Liberation day. What a difference. He is now a happy, healthy, beautiful donkey. Ronnie must look to his laurels. I think Barry is prettier. He has lovely eyes and what an amazing little darling he is thanks to you guys and especially Julian talking to him and cuddling him. One very traumatised and depressed donkey is now a joy to the world.

Barry's actual release was very beautiful and moving- better than any movie I've seen.
And, of course, as everybody who spends time with animals knows, things usually don't go off without at least one small hitch!

I'm so happy for Barry. He looked so happy when he started running. I do think he fancies himself as a horse not a donkey the way he played with them. It looked like that one horse stopped and told him he could play with them when they were on their way out to the field. Great video!
