944 turbo S owner here, couldnt wait for this video to come out and am very glad Matt loved it! Thanks Matt and Dillon!
how are miatas not considered "serious track cars"? you put too much weight onto the financial aspect of that statement. miatas have a perfect 50/50 weight ratio, rwd, mostly all manual etc... and also go to a track and tell me when you DON'T see one there.
The early '88 944S were originally all Silverose and were a special "stand alone" model. They were originally designed to be a limited production model. They became so popular that they wound up being a regular model available in any Porsche color. At the time of their production, they were known as one of the hottest cars that you could buy.
First car I ever drove was my dad's 944. He had a few of them over the years and I'll NEVER FORGET the sound the doors make when you open and close them. So solid and satisfying...
Super late comment here, but drove one of these in high school and man did I love my car. Out of all the personality and heart this car has, the solid heavy ass doors stood out the most. Spot on. Feels like an iron vault door lol.

When I was in high school, I saved 5K in cash to get a car. Saw that 944 prices had dropped. This was in 1990! I was 17 and found a one-owner 1985 1/2 with only 35K miles, and I traded a crap Saab worth 6K, but somehow got the dealer to give me 9500 for the Saab, and paid 4K cash on a 13,500 ask for the 944. Red. Phone dial wheels. Perfect interior. And with the newer 911 dash of that time. For a 17 year old kid, it was sick. My friends hated me, but I was like: fuck you, I earned it, and they were all driving cars three times as expensive from mommy and daddy's garage.
Perhaps the most timeless exterior design in the auto industry. Still looks great! For those wanting to buy one, do your research. There is a long list of idiosyncratic "944" things that will need attention.
Thank you men, that was great. I have a 09 Boxster S which sits tucked away during the winter months. When she comes out each spring it feels like getting a new car without that new car cost.
I went from living in a trailer when I was 15 and extremely poor, moved out, then moved in with my best friends family, who adopted me. Long story short, they bought me a 1991 944 S2. The 3.0 4 cylinder NA engine. I was only 16, but took immaculate care of that vehicle. The first thing my Stepdad said when he gave the car to me, was "if you don't get laid in this car, I'm going to kick your ass!" My love of the 944's began that day.
Yes. At some window corners sometimes. Mainly small pieces which are easy to repair. Roughly you can say that a real rusted Porsche must had have a bad repair. Good sign to keep away from them generaly speaking.
Yes - also right. Thats kind of Standard. Not many owners took the battery out once in a while to dry and clean the place under it. So most are rusted there too (also in older 911 Models).
I had one and loved it . I have owned 5 Porsches . I even had AutoAuthority modified, 911 killer back then. The only car I loved more was my 996 Turbo X50 modified .
Great car! I've always liked the 944's and the turbo S is the top of the food chain. It's nice to see Matt and Dyllon having such a genuinely good time in the old Porsche and refreshing to see such a nice, stock example.
Oscar Mendoza he never said that, he just said no more one takes. I think he’ll just be trying to create different car content than the same one takes all the time....
I still have that issue of Automobile in the attic. The 1988 944 Turbo S spanked a 911 Turbo in every facet around the track. It was the better car. 944s are so underrated its criminal.
This was my high school dream car, 944 Turbo S, I ended up with the poor mans version, Starion ESI-R. I could swear the final drive ratio was slightly lower in the Turbo S.
I loved my Starion too. Sweet Car, good to tune and really fast at the end. Made a Rallye Version out of it. Including Cage and short gears and a good boost from the Turbo.
- Agree 100 percent from personal experience from 1989. (My college years) Friend had a 944 turbo S, friends dad an 1986 930. Both were new cars. 944 easy to drive fast. 930 was old school VW feel with a 4 speed from the floor. We used to take the both out nights cruising, but the 944 was all around a more modern easier to drive fast car. 930 was excellent mainly in a straight line, (could hit 90 MPH in second gear easily)
I’m wondering if that GT ride quality is from 200k mile suspension. My 240k mile accord had incredibly smooth suspension until I replaced the original shocks.
There were a few local autocrossers on a local forum (when forums were a thing) who ran these and really cleaned up. Even a well built n/a 944 would be a killer mountain/canyon car.
Also remember the 1989 944 Turbo just took over the full 944 Turbo S spec, and they dropped the conventional non-S turbo in '89. 944s continued through 1991 but the 90 and 91 model years had no more turbos, and only the S2 (with the 3.0 liter 225 HP I4 that was the earlier version of the 968 motor).
So sad this series is almost done. Idk what I’ll watch during my morning dump now. This has been an integral part of my SS&S routine for years now. But I’m looking forward to whatever comes next
Loved my 951 had an oversize turbo and adj wastegate boosted just about 2 bar. 6 pot Brembo's, strut tower brace, and short throw shifter. Guard Red over Tan with Fusch's.
They came with Goodyear Gatorback tires and handled quite well. If I remember correctly C&D had a great review of them. The rear lower apron distinguishes it from other 944’s.
Jack Brant Jr It has the same balance shafts from a Mitsubishi engine in the 80s. I think from the Starion... The engine is half the bank of a 928 and everything else is exclusive for the 944 Turbo.
Fix for the steering issue: remove the power steering pump. It's a common mod with these cars. The 924S didn't even have one from the factory, and it was among the best driver's cars I've ever owned - right up there with the Boxster S and NA Miata.
This 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S (also referred to as 951) is one of the 380 special "Silver Rose" editions. It is a stock vehicle, well cared for, with over 195,000 original miles. To go from the regular 944 Turbo to the Turbo S, you got a larger turbo, ride height-adjustable Koni shocks, a hardened steel-cased gearbox, and many other factory race spec parts. The 944 Turbo S was actually faster around the track then its bigger brother the 930 Turbo, according to a period test in Automobile Magazine.

Ive seen some great youtube videos on how to take those old yellowed fluid tanks and make them bright white again. I would do that to any older car I owned (in the future).
Can we remind ourselves that this is a 200K mileage car?! Incredible.
Alex Quail And it still outperforms brand new cars that cost many times more and also rattle more from brand new than this old beast.
Yup, 200k on a 80's 4cyl turbo is amazing.
Porsche knows how to build a car.
Probably should give some credit to the first owner too.
My 944 S has 147k and still going strong, really good build quality not even any squeaks or rattles.

Did you not hear? He’s not making any new videos. For about the last month he’s been posting videos he had already filmed but never aired.
If everyone drove stock cars, the car world would be a boring place.
Ronald Stonecipher why isn't he making new videos?

This video really brings into perspective what the 944 must have been like in the late 80s.
I'd give this car 100%
