  • July 18 marked 40 years since the mass shooting at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro.
On July 18, 1984, a lone gunman walked into the McDonald’s on San Ysidro Boulevard and opened fire killing 21 people, and injuring 19 others. At the time it was the deadliest mass shooting in United States history.
The ordeal lasted over 77 minutes before the gunman was fatally shot by a police sniper.
To honor the victims, a ceremony was held at the Southwestern College Higher Education Center, which now sits on the former McDonald’s property.

I never forgot the little boy who was dead next to his bike near the door of that McDonald's. I read that he wanted to go get himself an ice cream Sunday. I cried when I read that and it'll always be a memory that I won't forget.

It's so sad to look at that photo of the infant and think that they should be about 41 years-old today, maybe with their own family, but he or she never got to live past being just a baby. That's so messed up.

I was 3 years old, living in National City, CA (San Diego County), when this tragedy occurred. I was a very inquisitive child- I saw the news, heard it from neighbors speaking to my mother about it, and my mother and aunt speak about it in our household.
I heard a comment from mom, that the police, then the SWAT team failed to act quickly. Either the Gunman shot many people, before the police arrived, or the police, SWAT team failed to act speedily.
We lived 25 minutes north of San Ysidro, however would always travel through this city to access Tijuana, B.C., Mexico.
I remember vaguely the McDonalds, I think it was small, and recall when my Uncle purchased a hamburger for me there in 1983, or 1984, a little before the tragedy.
Rest in Peace to all victims.
    Greetings!! from Anchorage, Alaska.
