  • "Semper Paratus" means "Always Ready." That is the motto of the U.S. Coast Guard because its members are always ready to defend and preserve the United States. The mission is unique: protecting ports and waterways from all kinds of threats.
Part 1. Jen Lahmers spoke to Adm. Karl Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, to get his overview of what this unique branch of the military does every day.
Part 2. Joe Toohey got a first-hand look from the water and from the air at how the Coast Guard performs dangerous and challenging helicopter rescue missions.
Part 3. Sector New York is the largest operational field command on the East Coast. Lisa Evers learned about how the Coast Guard protects New York Harbor.
Part 4. Raegan Medgie went on board a New Jersey-based cutter that has not one but two women in charge.
Part 5. During the winter, the Coast Guard helps keep cargo moving along the Hudson River. Mac King joined the crew of the Cutter Sturgeon Bay as it carried out a day of ice breaking on the Hudson.
Part 6. Jen Lahmers also went on the Hudson River to try her hand at one of the toughest jobs in the Coast Guard-checking and maintaining navigational buoys.

Lived my entire life minutes from the ocean. The Guard doesn't get enough credit. The amount of people who own boats and have no idea how to operate them is amazing. If not for these great Americans many would be dead. I'm a 20 year combat vet and never realized they have about 50k strength. I honestly thought it was more, maybe 100, 150k. But 50k? Wow. Promotions but be competitive. Anyway thank you for your service.

John on wives computer. Served 4 active duty years going from CG Station as a seaman to a petty officer in the medical corps on buoy tender in the ninth CG district. I cherish every minute I spent in the Guard. It was an honor to be able to serve with them. Shipmates were awesome.

When I was in we were under the dept of treasury. Least funded military branch in govt with the most responsibility’s. When homeland security was invented they realized the the law enforcement abilities of the CG petty officers and immediately the CG was turned over to homeland. Still getting the pay of the military but with the most law inforcement capability besides the SAR and ANT plus all the other responsibilities oil spill ship inspection plus..The list of USCG tasks are amazing and never published

I don’t know much about the Sea. But I think any institution should get the MOST CAPABLE people, instead of diversity. MOST CAPABLE is not attached to diversity or race. But maybe the in the sea the things are different.

The "diversity" woke crap is going to sink Merica, pardon the pun. Isn't it supposed to be about merit? I don't care if the whole damn crew is female, but calling it out is reverse sexism. Oh and in 2021, isn't it transphobic to be even callingbpeople men and women lol

  • @Hamann9631

That is racist to think about the race of people. We don't need see a person who "looks like us" to want to do it. That comment makes me wonder if the person coming to rescue me will be there because he is good or because the Commandant looked at color skin instead of the content of character and qualifications.

I thought the Coast Guard wanted the best candidates. I saw women and minorities so this is just another military leader who is mandated by the White House to chant about diversity.
