It’s too bad the phantasm series went downhill from here. This is a film that knows it’s pretty cheesy and it’s not going for serious. I think it’s superior to the original Phantasm - that took all this seriously.
That scene they were laughing at in The Dead Pool had me on the edge of my seat. The filmmakers did a great job setting up the threat to the point where seeing this tiny toy car chase after Clint Eastwood was one of the most nail-biting and suspenseful chases I've ever seen.
To say that planes, trains, and automobiles is a B to the relationship of Midnight Run is insane. That relationship and payoff is fantastic. Sometimes, I believed Gene was too intellectually critiquing films, where roger allowed emotion to win him over.
And yet, Ebert couldn't understand the simple fact that "Die Hard" is just supposed to be pure entertainment and wanted the writing to be on the level of "Dog Day Afternoon". lol
I never thought about it before, but really, The Dead Pool is a very sly dark satire of the Dirty Harry movies themselves. If you can go into it understanding that, it's enjoyable. Great episode. While the stupid police chief doesn’t ruin Die Hard for me, I was rewatching it recently and Ebert was right. It’s hard to believe someone that dumb exists. It doesn’t add much to the movie for me having a one dimensional villain who should be on the side of the protagonists.

Boy, did they get it wrong with Phantasm. The original is one of the most influential movies ever (from Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street to Captain Phasma - named after the movies - in Star Wars). And they say it's lazy? No. The whole cast and crew finished the series by hook or crook, with Angus Scrimm literally dying while finishing the fifth and final in the series. That's far from lazy. It makes it even more insulting that it came directly after they gave 2 thumbs up to The Dead Poop.
The Dirty Harry movies were 100% linear for me. I liked the first the best, the 2nd the 2nd best and so on. I was in the minority in that I didn't care much for Sudden Impact or The Dead Pool.
The early Dirty Harry movies were better as the series wasn't played out yet, and they fit better into the 70's social and political landscape. I went to see "The Dead Pool" in the cinema. It felt rushed, poorly-written and acted. I was very disappointed back then.
@@robf6105 The reason why it was made was because it was part of deal Eastwood made with Warners.
