Another great video! A small tip for others performing this repair you can actually unbolt and scoot the steering rack towards the front of vehicle a couple of inches for more room without harming anything. A lot of guys will do that when actually upgrading the downpipes to catless.
BMW Fanatic when are you going to do downpipes? I installed ARM dp but im getting vibration. I might have installed it hitting the subframe or the heat shield.
Hi, thanks for the video. if I researched correctly there are total of 4 sensors. I am assuming you replaced 2 sensors that are pre-cat , right? At what point do we need to replace the post cat , do you have a video for those as well?
Sensors 2 are post cats and only throw codes they do not affect AFR(air fuel ratio) which is why if you have a tune they automatically(jb4) cancel bank 2 sensors because they are useless besides emissions
I'm at 72k so I probably don't need to swap mine out yet but figure I might as well do it when I do dp's soon since I hate pulling that damn panel off the bottom lol. Good vid my man thanks!
Is jacking the car really required? This seems different from the N51 that I have and I was thinking they would be similar but I don't think that's the case. Most videos show the N51 being replaced from the top and it appears to be in a very different location from N54. Great video as always though.
I have an n52 motor I believe the downstream o2 sensors are located in the same spot as the n54. My question was being that the downstream o2 sensors are close together is it possible to screw them into the wrong pipes? I know u cant mess up the connectors as they are different.
I just want to be clear, bank 2 sensor 1 can be removed from underneath the car ? I stripped the second screw from the metal plate cover and I can’t get a good angle from the top so I’m wondering if going under the car will give me a better view / grip so I can try to unscrew it
2011 BMW 335is. I'm at 118k miles but I don't know how to tell if I need them. I'm 3rd owner bought at 82k miles. No record on replacing them. How do you know you need them? A tire shop told me I need them before I hit 120k. That at 120k they fail completely and need to be replaced immediately. What happens if they fail and I still drive it? Thanks!
a lot can happen - misfires is the most common... your cats can start glowing red / orange due to fuel burning at it which can cook your piston rings and cylinder walls... etc.
My E60 2008 535xi shows 002C7E and 002C9F aftercut O2 sensor trim control Bank 1 , Aftercut O2 sensor heater input signal, the car feels lik spending much fuel (5km/L) and it doesn't feel smooth and there's light blue smoke from time to time with the oil burning smell but not always just from time to time usually when I drive little bit hard when I'm in a rush , can you guide me to the possible issues ?
Daniel G Cold air on a Turbo car doesn't do much since they feed into hot turbos. The gain with the DCI is that it makes the ease of targeting higher boost with the increase flow. Intake temps or heat soak would be tied to the intercooler, so a much needed upgrade 😀
did this end up fixing the issue? I am currently having issues with jb4 safety map switches and noticed afr and afr2 delta is too high. wondering if its vacuum leak or o2. 86k miles
i changed my valve cover gasket a few weeks ago and cross switch my o2 sensors by mistake when I plugged them back in. the car ran like crap, would shake like a stripper on start up then I realized what I had done after doing some trouble shooting. problem went away but I still have the SES light. My friend reset and it came back on when I cut the car off and started it back up. I didn't have the light before my screw up. is there anyway to keep it off or do I have to get new sensors?
What’s the exact code that you’re getting? The codes should go away after you fixed it. Maybe a rare case to where another issues came up right at the same time
Hi I’ve being getting code po171 on my 2008 335i do you know what code might that be or the meaning of that code I’m new with bmw and I learn the hard way on how not to take it to the dealership 😢
Hello I have a question cause you only replaced 2 sensors? On my car I am currently a DYI and the bmw dealership told me to replace my bank 2 pre cat and post cat?? You didn’t do neither of these
There are two more sensors under the passenger side of the car. Remove the splash guard from under the car and their should be two of them. Thats all I know. Good luck!! Keep me updated!
I’m getting a P2098 code “post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank 2” sounds like they would be the other O2 sensors huh? Any video on replacing those?
BMW Fanatic, was your engine bumping (quick bursts of slightly increased rpm) at stop lights (idle) before you switched out the old Oxygen sensor? Thanks a lot 2009 328i - 70,000
The map sensor in the engine bay that sits on top which part number would that be i understand the 335i n54 has two that look exactly the same its so irritating that there is no information on it the two map sensors look identical i think installed the wrong one Idk I'm bout to sell the damn car i won't pass smog unless that's resolved i put a new one service engine light came off now it's back on so stupid how there's no information on that stupid little part

Nick Henno N52 is close, but just higher up in the engine Bay Area since no turbos. You would get to them through the engine bay and would need an 02 removal socket tool
You have great timing, just found out I need to replace my O2 sensors right as this video came out! Whew that's a tight space! Looking forward to seeing how big your boy is now, 6 years later!
Great video!! Any video on changing the post catalyst sensors??
Did you mean to put music over the part where your taking the engine cover off, I can't hear what your saying
Are they both same not same product ? Can the cheaper one - Bosch 17098- be used in both location ?
Need some DIY to replace all 4 O2 Sensor on my N54 2009 BMW 335i any recommendation video thanks :)
Irving Alvarado I wouldn’t recommend replacing the rear two because it’s a waste of money unless you live in a emission state
thanks for the video and the links. Do you have one for the other 2 O2 Sensors? THANKS!

Try this on a RHD car, steering rack sits right in the way, what a PITA
so you did:
bank 1 sensor 1
bank 2 sensor 1
is that right?
Yes

Mic Raw Yep! It's when people usually do change them out 👍🏻
Add "primary", "upstream" or "Sensor 1" in the title.
So my bank 2 is running rich at around 24+. How do I know whether it’s pre or post cat??
Do you need special tool for any of the 4 sensors?

Were you actually getting a CEL or fuel trim issues, or you did this to be proactive?
Fuel trim issues / being proactive
if the o2 sensor is bad, could it could blue smoke and engine shaking on cold startup which goes away after 1 or 2mins?
Yes, my car does this too. All 6 injectors have been replaced, so I'm thinking 02 sensor.
Ha same here. I did the ignition coils and plugs already ordered the sensors.
Turbos are done.
Thanks man will be doing this tomorrow morning!
if you still running stock o2 sensors they will fail at 100k mine happend at 97k
what was the code? or the symptoms?

Great video. I was wondering what setting did you put for 10 and 11 . Do set it higher or lower on setting 11 to make the throttle less sensitive
Tyler Banh I'm still at the default settings for those options

+Adrian Inman what's going on?
If you have a 135i and are watching this, you will NOT be able to reach from underneath, at least not easily. The spacing is a lot tighter.

pre-cat is primary aka upstream aka sensor 1.

bank 2 = cylinders 4,5,6 in the rear

yes, bank1sensor1 and bank2sensor1 are pre-cat.... sensor2 is post

Jon Mathews, I have that situation now...
Would that be possibly an o2 issue.? I’m getting that now too

I get a p0420 circuit to low bank 1 also p0430 circuit to low bank 2, but it don't say sensor 1 or 2. Could this be cat related

Does it run now? Or is the issue larger than initially thought?
Mecha Fanboy so far so good with aft readings! Still looking at a few things to ensure that was it
BMW Fanatic good to hear!
Lee, I'm wondering...could we use two 17098 sensors? Is the difference just the wire length? The 17098 sensor is $60 cheaper.
Koach K Yep, you could use the bank 1 for both. I was going to do that, but didn't want to confuse anyone
BMW Fanatic Thanks for confirming, Lee.
Are the other 2 sensors, that easy to replace? I have a 2006 325I,by the way...
