yes my bad. Apologies. The explanation of LDR is correct but I mistakenly explained the 2nd branch wrong. So here is the correct explanation: As the remaining voltage in the 1st branch increases we want the remaining voltage in the 2nd branch to increase as well so that the ammeter reading again becomes zero. For that we move the sliding contact to the left so that less wire/resistance is contacted and less voltage gets used up in the 2nd branch.
