    Line arrays are an improvement upon prior arrays that were used in touring sound, but they are still a complex system with a messy impulse response because of the number of sources and the different distances to the sources (resulting in the 'swishing' of comb filtering), which are too far apart to truly combine into a wavefront of the desired shape, which is why you get the off-axis lobing. They are also modular - you hook up the number of boxes you need to get the necessary output, which is super, super convenient; with point source cabinets you have a system that's either too large or too small for the application, because you only buy a few large point source boxes - you can't easily build up a system that is just as large as what you need. So line arrays still provide a solution for pro touring sound, with a level of acceptance that point source boxes have not managed to penetrate.

    I was introduced to Tom way back when I was a guitarist and was playing at a party nearby jamming with a band. We hit it off and were great friends for many years. I can still remember his large speakers he designed and built in high school. He's always been way ahead of his time and for that matter beyond conventional technology offered. May he continue innovating and treating the sound reinforcement industry for many years to come

    I went to a presentation at Manchester University United Kingdom demonstrating their sound systems earlier this year. Absolutely phenomenal!!! Expensive, but what do you expect for Brilliant gear. All line array systems sound naff by comparison. This is the modern way forward. There are no sweet spots or dead spots, it’s one giant sweet spot! The sound doesn’t change no matter where you stand. Brilliant quality,. Loud and very, very clear! I would definitely recommend you listen to them. This is an acoustical revolution. Have a listen, you’ll be glad you did!

    Finding a second mic before you do an interview, at Infocomm of all places, doesn't seem like a lot of effort ;-)

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 років тому +1

      I was actually going to hold the mic for Mr Danley but he decided he wanted to hold it instead so we came to an amicable compromise :)

      Of all the places to do an interview - Infocomm is probably the easiest place to get not just one mic, but enough to have lots of redundancy!
      So many folks who are usually very keen to prove the new products they're promoting. There are a lot of mics there...

      @@GLBProductions It was the right solution. Tom is a soft-spoken person, and you have an easier time projecting your voice, so the sound was fine.

      @@GLBProductions yes. Also I imagine it was great to get that interview, because I think Tom doesn’t like public speaking. So must have been an honour.

      No he doesn't, but I think he appreciated the fact that I had come half way around the world to hear him speak and check out his products.

      I’ve yet to hear any of them, but I’ve built a synergy horn , and so far, four tapped horns!

    Intelligibility - that is a word I have used forever and so many people who boast to be "sound engineers" don't understand. Throwing a bunch of speakers together with lots of power just makes louder noise. Altec made an adapter to mount two driver on a horn. When I was just out of high school. Frank Donley of Taft Sound let me barrow three adapters and four 806 drivers on a 511b horn. That worked better than four horns with one driver each. It was clear for 150 feet. But it didn't give the coverage. Wish this had been around fifty years ago.

      Thanks for the historical perspective Ed. Those of us who are sound engineers today are incredibly fortunate to be able to stand on the shoulders of men like Tom Danley.

    Tom is a GIANT in the electro-acoustic world - has a jaw-dropping bio & list of achievements that makes most mortals pale into insignificance... Head Acoustician for NASA.... & he comes across as such a down to earth human being....for a bit of history check out "Servodrive" > Tom's sub-woofers from the 1990's - actually the current Power-Soft M-drive look very similar conceptually to Tom's Servodrive from the 90's ( no I haven't looked at the details... )

      Glad to meet another fan of Mr Danley! He is a seriously humble man - at Infocomm he would patiently explain the most basic audio concepts to people who clearly knew next to nothing about sound, all without being the least bit judgemental. It was an honour to interview him.

    • @BogdanWeiss
      @BogdanWeiss 6 років тому

      What can I say ? Mr Danley has made a giant contribution to mankind - Don Keele is another living phenomenon - sharp as a razor-blade & also has a sense of humour....
      I just wish that people replace all these awful sounding zero-imaging line arrays that are almost everywhere these days.... I'm literally unable to listen to them....
      BTW I like your somewhat goofy interview style :-) you can get away with it, because you're not offending any of your interviewees - you give them space without attracting too much attention to yourself & you actually have subject relevant knowledge & experience & trade shows are tough & exhausting for everyone & your humour litens-up the whole situation
      Keep-up the good work - substance never goes out of style - there are very few people holding the mike who can formulate relevant intelligent questions & you soon get sick & tired of waffle & hype & sheer marketing nonsense
      Thanks mate ;-)
