    It's crazy that these Mini PC's have become such viable machines, you could pop one of these under your TV for entertainment, emulation, and gaming all in one.

      Literally my use case for my 55" bedroom TV. Was looking at getting a gaming laptop for a while but for the price these can't be beat. Really good value in my opinion. Now they just need repair centres in a few big cities around the world.

    Those thumbnails are so timeless. I am still shocked at how effective they are!! Great video Phawx, as always!

    I would praise you for your usually epic thumbnail-to-video transition but an ad got in the way 😢

    I have a SER5 with 5600H and still happy with it. I am now waiting on the Ryzen 370 based miniPCs for my next upgrade ....

    Mine just arrived a couple of hours ago lol. I hope in future they have a square 'Speaker Dock' with rounded corners that it slips into with, well, nice speakers and additional ports, micro SD slot and maybe another NVME slot for good measure. I know the GTI 14 Ultra is out soon but I prefer AMD. I do like the voice command feature on the GTI 14 Ultra though. Pretty nifty.

    Why didn't you change Temp max or manually increase the fan speed curve to prevent the CPU from reaching Tmax? Ryzen could run at even higher performance, but it had to thermally throttle

    • @FFXfever
      @FFXfever 3 місяці тому

      The graph showcase that increasing CPU performance will negatively correlate with GPU performance. The issue is memory bandwidth and wattage supplied from power supply. It's not a throttling issue in this case.
      It's been said since 680m, we're ram bottlenecked. Playing with timings has more improvement to the Igpu than moving to 780m

    Heyy i have a question if you wouldn’t mind answering for me, so i bought the ser8 mini pc i saw from your video, is it possible to connect an eGpu, (i don’t know anything about eGpu’s), and if so will it run just as perfect, and aswell what eGpu would you recommend fully for that pc🙏 it would mean a lot💪

    What about STAPM? I noticed you left it on auto. Does it not reduce power for longer workloads?

    Hello, I don't have the options in the BIOS like you do to increase the limit to 70 watts, I'm using BIOS v26 AMD CBS option isn't there, do I have to enable something? Thanks for your help..

    As someone who is pro repairability, I'm starting to be curious for a SoC version of the Ryzen.

    I've asked elsewhere but I may as well ask The Phawx too 😎 Would you say it's advisable to run these SER8s continuously overnight to download torrents or is a cheap laptop better suited for that?

      @cutesammie Just being a bit precious I guess. I recently got a torrent client on android and tbh it performs even better than when my phone is used as a hotspot lol.

    it seem like mini pc have to move to CAMM type memory for more bandwidth

  • @gametime4316

    1GHZ 2GHZ 3GHZ, the margin is so small...
    we really need widher GPU + more memory bandwidth and less clocks.
    i really dislike that push to 8.5-10GHZ memory instead of doing a 196/256 bit bus with slower memory.
    i believe that strix point will be a nice bump with the same envelope of hawk point (small GPU/memory bus and high clocks) and it ill be great for the 15-25W range.
    but at 50-70W like this PC i am sure the strix halo will wipe the floor with those tiny overclocked dies ( strix point/hawk point/phoenix)
    the most interesting part will be to see at what power usage strix point and strix halo will meet on the efficiency graph and i know who is the man that will show us those graph in next 6-12 month from now :)

    I thought it would have over 100GB/s in throughput memory wise using 7500lpddr5x? 70gb/s is such a bottleneck for the gpu. Keep in mind that ddr5 at 6000+ get over 100GB/s on desktop(intel) kind of a letdown that they pair lpddr5x memory to a system that is basically a small desktop pc.

    I'm still disappointed AMD didn't design the Strix Point APUs to use VRAM, there's no reason laptops can't include 8GB of GDDR6X on the motherboard.

    • @lhl
      @lhl 3 місяці тому +1

      While having GDDR support would be nice for desktop APU systems, there certainly *is* a reason it's not included - GDDR and LPDDR use different signalling protocols so you would need a separate PHY implementation on the APU. Furthermore, GDDR6X has a data rate of 21Gbps/pin vs LPDDR5X-6400 at 6.4Gbps so you would need to spec the memory controller to also handle the additional bandwidth even at the same bus width.
      Since you mention laptops, at a minimum of 4 GDDR6X chips, we are talking about 15-20W of power just for the memory alone. GDDR has 10-50X higher idle power consumption also and AFAIK doesn't support deep sleep states, so would be unsuitable for system memory suspend to boot.
      From AMD, I think waiting for Strix Halo is the only real option (256-bit bus LPDDR5X).

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 3 місяці тому

      @@lhl 4090 Desktop vs 4090 Mobile, they only change between GDDR6X to regular GDDR6.
      The largest of the Strix Point APUs at 120w TDP won't be any good for mobile in the first place, it doesn't make sense to bottleneck that APU for the sake of saving 20w.

    • @lhl
      @lhl 3 місяці тому

      @@budthecyborg4575 You can look up PHYs yourself and see if you can find any LPDDR + GDDR ones. AFAIK none has ever been designed. As for TDP, cTDP of the highest-end Strix Point SKU is currently 15-54W, if there's an eventual desktop version and AMD follows previous generations, it won't exceed 65W. Strix Halo is a different beast, but it's worth keeping in mind that for GDDR6/6X, the biggest chips are 16Gb. On a 256-bit bus that means you're limited to 8 placements (16GB or 32GB with clamshell mode) - AMD is shipping eng boards with up to 128GB of LPDDR5X. While there may be some *ahem* "halo" workstation boards, my understanding is they're mainly targeting mid-range gaming laptops (where the MaLL cache will alleviate bandwidth demands). Don't get me wrong, I'd love more memory bandwidth for my personal needs, although personally, I'd rather AMD just sell single MI300A or MI300Xs w/ 5.3TB/s of HBM3 MBW for workstation use.

    I wish I could know someone like you that could help me. I have a kinhank 12tb hyper spin external hard drive. Every video I have watched from others on this ser8 they all claim everything works perfectly. That isn't so with me. So I am failing to do something with my PC I suppose. I only know how to update the PC when I get it change the hertz from 29 to 60 and change it from balanced to high performance. Recently I have stumbled across people like you that talk about going into BIOS and advanced and change things in dos. But when I type BIOS it doesn't bring me to what you are showing. Plus what are the chances mathematically that I get three bad PCs in a row from Amazon? The first was the ser6 it had a bad HDMI port. Then I got the gmktech 8 nucbox and the games froze or crashed within a half an hour and then now the ser8 the next morning it would not turn on and every day there after unless I unplugged the power cord and then plugged it back in. My name is Dennis any advise tips or how to like getting into BIOS and what to change would be very much appreciated thank you
