At first listen, this is a fun, kind of whimsical song about what the persona would do as the last person on Earth but I think the bridge where she sings, "There go my friends all dropping like flies," ties this song into a palpable isolation that is felt throughout Anna's discography ("Bubblegum" anybody?). This seems like a song born of the distancing from childhood friends that occurs in a person's early twenties as much as it is an amusing thought experiment. We can be tempted to lose ourselves, our way, our sanity when all the folks we grew up with start to get jobs, get families, get busy with life. A restlessness, a wildness is begotten in breaking from our childhood selves and in that period of our lives we are given to great escape and libation, vandalism and thievery. Our actions and our actions alone determine the content of our character, not the company we keep. What will you do when you lose your friends and family? Who will you be when you're the last man on Earth?
