    The main problem with - especially closed - headphones is that the source is very close to your ears (directly pushing and pulling your eardrums) so you get tired more quickly, and when that happens, your hearing starts to get weaker in the higher frequencies first, thus you start pushing more mids and highs than you need to. Many people get this wrong and tries to mix in headphones for hours on end, and when the next day they listen to what they did with fresh ears, disappointment ensues.
    My go-to method is to mix in headphones for 15-20 minutes at most (absolutely no more than 30 min), then take a long break (smoke, eat, do whatever else with the project), then back at it again for 15-20 mins etc. As I started doing this, my results got a lot better, and also learned to not screw around too much endlessly with a mix as an added benefit.

      In my home setup, I've had to do everything on headphones for the last three years. (Neighbours, family, bla bla). I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600 open backed headphones. I think I'm getting good results - things sound great on them, and also translate well in the car, but it's necessity. I'd like to be able to listen on speakers, but simply can't.

      I have several neighbours like that.. When I clean my apartment I like to play music loudly, often heavy styles. This however is at 13:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon, not when people are sleeping etc.. I have several neighbours who complain about it. They however think it's super normal to use power tools while gardening for hours that often even drown out the heaviest Metal. (looking at you Mr. Chainsaw fetish). When I spoke about it to them they told me: yes but gardening is normal, the music you listen to is not....I also got a complaint claiming my guitar was disturbing because I rarely finish a song.. I had to explain the when practising you actually need time to learn and fail and you go through the parts one by one. The response was "well I listen to Clapton a lot and he never does that". Wait you have practice recordings of Clapton??? I responded. But no.. she meant the albums she listens to... some people are just clueless about the process that goes into making music.

    Checking mixes with headphones have another perk and that is it's by far what gets used the most for music listening this day in age so it makes sense to make sure your mix translates well to commonly used devices. I also suggest doing some checks against bluetooth/portable speakers as well as those too are commonly used.

    • @triple_x_r_tard
      @triple_x_r_tard 3 роки тому +1

      i find that headphones can effect the mix drastically harder than switching well-crafted speaker systems like those in studios, cars, clubs, etc. this is why maybe translation might work better if you have great speakers or at least more than one pair of headphones.

    You reminded me Glen with your comment about drummers suddenly bashing away on the kit as you get your head close to adjust a mic position... I had a trumpet player do the same to me once. I got the full force of a long, loud high note in the left ear at point blank range as I was plugging his mic in. Thanks for the threshold of pain moment there buddy.

      Trumpets sound funny when there shoved up the players ass.
      The strangest thing I ever experienced with sound was with a b3 organ speaker cabinet. I was on stage running cable for the hand held Camara man and I had to hid out of the shot for the organ solo. I sat on the floor with my back to the cabinet and this guy was cranking it out and I'm not making this up or exaggerating this I felt something move in my body the size of a marble from the middle of my back down and across to the lower right of my side still to this day I don't know what it was if it was a stone it never passed and this was 15 years ago. I'll never forget that.

I always yank out more bottom end when mixing in the phones. Then when I test it in the cars etc it's usually really close if not dead on. Know your mixing reference source. The only way you get there is just by doing it and doing it. Once you learn your equipment you are good.

    I started with a set of AKG K-44s, partly because being quiet was an issue, partly because I didn't want to shell out for monitors and was using bookshelf speakers. Situation definitely plays a huge part. With my wife working in her office on the phone I can't crank monitors at all. So I do the check check check method. Main stuff on headphones, (I do a ton of video work) then check audio on monitors, house sterio and car after the main work is done. Most of my time is spent trying to line up audio with video vs actually mixing and mastering. My music channel is opposite, most of the time is fighting with instrument mixing, and lining up the different tracks correctly. Still learning, only been doing it roughly a year.

My first good pair of open back headphones were a set of K240's I got on sale. As an impulse buy to replace the headphones that came with my interface, it's been a godsend. Especially after moving out and having to leave a lot of gear behind, including my Kali LP8's. Thankfully I also have some DT770's to have a closed back set for tracking and other things, but bouncing between the two has been great for me being in a temporary space at the moment. Headphones are great for EQing as well - great for hunting for resonant frequencies via notch EQs. As long as you aren't too overzealous with it (and use a set of headphones with a reasonable flat frequency curve), and as long as you double-check using ear-level monitors, with bass traps installed - this works great for taming mixes.

    I've commented this on a previous video, but unfortunately I cannot mix on monitors due to my situation at home. Also, you can't predict where someone is going to listen to a project you worked on so whether you mix on headphones or monitors, listening to your mix through several speaker systems alongside your reference track is crucial to cover all possible "listening experiences". In my case, I put a mix through a phone speaker, earbuds, TV speakers, Bluetooth speakers of two sizes and in my car. My latest mix sounds nice everywhere, but through a phone speaker the snare is almost as bass heavy as the kick. In the end, this is something I would've most likely noticed right away on monitors.

    I was thinking about the topic of mixing on headphones for the last couple of weeks now (I can't put up studio monitors for multiple reasons) and came up with an idea:
    Buy two pairs of decent studio headphones, one closed- and one open-back pair. Then insert a room emulation plugin like dearVR Monitor in the monitoring chain of your DAW.
    This gives you lots of different ways to check your mix, reaching from headphones only to accurate representations of how everything will sound in various rooms and spaces.
    Any thoughts and opinions on this approach as well as the plugin mentioned?

    Hey Glen! I was wondering, how do you keep a bass player busy/entertained at the studio when he isn't recording? We caught ours before he stuck a knife in an electrical outlet. I was thinking probably a laser pointer, keys to occasionally jingle around, maybe some shiny coins (he might choke on those). Speaking of shiny objects, I once confused a bass player for a lead singer. I thought he was looking at himself, turns out, he was just staring at something shiny.

    #2 and #3 big time - but especially the leafblower bit!!! Mixing at home means negotiating with the laptop fan, the partner/children, neighbours, ambulances and traffic raising the noise floor to unusable levels for monitors. People forget that pro studios are not only treated for room response but also (and especially) for isolation - and those that aren't are not worth your money, especially those that leave a noisy dehumidifier/aircon always on in the tracking room and think that's OK for tracking!!! I've never heard that in one of your rants, Glenn, but I think this should feature in them! :D Anyway, if you don't have silent conditions at home, (FIRSTLY DO NOT TRACK WITH MICS AT HOME, THEN) use headphones for details, especially compression, and quiet parts, do a second round of EQ and bus/master EQing on the monitors, and go back to the headphones before signing off the mix. Gets the stress off and saves a lot of time.
    Furthermore, worth mentioning that 90% of the listens of a track in the real world will be through headphones and earphones, and not speakers... So, talking about how mixes "translate", never checking headphones is daft at best...!

    I'm trying to learn what I actually need to record my guitar and bass guitar. I have an unusual writing style. Its all guitar and bass, no vocals or drums. I've attempted reaper and a few others but couldn't find out how to get them to record my clean tones. All clean tones sounded like a shitty chorus pedel... all that watery, warblers bullshit. I'm guessing that it had something to do with latency. I'm using a positive grid amp for the tones and was using the USB out. If I get a cheap daw and mic the amp will I get a recording of the sound I'm creating?

    I have to use headphones. My room is not acoustically treated. But I've adjusted my work flow in a way to where I know what adjustments need to be made by listening to my mix on different sources. I don't EQ anything until I've done that, and it also helps me pinpoint where my headphones are lying.

    Glenn, I have heard or read somewhere that for tracking closed back headphones are ideal because they cut down or eliminate mic/headphone bleed which is especially relevant to me as I write and record mainly acoustic music. But for mixing with headphones, the source said that open back headphones where much better than closed back. One of the reason for this was that closed back headphones can allow for a build-up of bass frequencies in the headphones much like a room without bass traps while this does not happen with open back headphones. What is your take on this?

    • @joemarta8221
      @joemarta8221 3 роки тому +1

      I'm not glen but that is exactly right imo. You need closed backs for tracking, bleed on open backs is brutal. But closed backs just sound, well, closed. Boxy, overly bassy but not in a pleasing way more like a very sharp rise in a few unpleasant muddy midbass frequencies

    Couple of questions: You've said on a number of occasions, how people use their own home recording studio to track various things, guitar/bass etc, and save the big room studio recording time for the kit. So, when band do this, what do they track against when doing the drums? What goes down when the drums go down? And, what and how would you lay down, if a band were using your studio in this fashion?

    • @B3Band
      @B3Band 3 роки тому +1

      Scratch tracks, or band playing live. At first we would use scratch tracks, but now we perform with the drummer at the same time since we're all DI anyway, and we all have the click in our in-ears.

    • @Bring_MeSunshine
      @Bring_MeSunshine 3 роки тому

      @@B3Band Excellent. I've used scratch tracks going to the drummers headphones but these were demos, and not enough 'feel' meant the drum track ended up too reserved. I figured DI would be the only solution where I couldn't get remote separation of amps. Incidentally, what DI boxes/sims etc do you use?

      In my opinion Reference can really safe your a** if you have to mix with headphones and you just can check it with different audio sources before get it properly mastered. I know that now there Is a complete new version of Sonarworks re-branded as Reference-id and just reading what they change/improve with this new "brand" seems really an improvement and sure when I will end to works on my actual projects I will get the chance for the full working 24 days Reference Id demo. For the moment I will stick till the end of my actual @ works projects with Sonarworks 4 and Goodhertz CanOpener Studio for the "headphones" crossfeed "gaps". With those 2 plug-in as monitor FX in Reaper till before the mix rendering, and only for rendering deactivate the Reaper "Monitor FX" button really get serious improvements to my mix, the proof is the mix check "trial" in my stereo car, on my smartphone via Bluetooth on a mono portable speaker, in my living room stereo, on a portable MP3 device with very very low quality in hear headphones.
