Yah they were the only newcomer to understand what makes a good console. 3DO, Jag and CDi had impressive aspects but missed one fact: people wanna play video games, and they wanna play good video games
The other thing that Sony did when they entered the video game market was look at the PC and computer gaming scenes, especially the European microcomputer scenes that post Amiga didn't really have anywhere to go other than consoles. I think they picked up a fair few developers who had been working on the Amiga, saw PCs as far too small a market as there weren't really any PCs or Macs that would have been price equivalent to an A500 or A1200 and _really_ didn't want to be trapped working with Nintendo and Sega. Sony were unique in that they, unlike Atari and 3DO, were both big enough to subsidise the console as a loss leader and either fund or buy up publishers and developers and they were open minded enough to make the Sony PlayStation easy and unrestrictive to develop for. Sony were also unique in releasing kind of limited devkits to the general public with Net Yaroze. I don't think any console manufacturer has done that until Microsoft made it possible to put its latest XBOX consoles into Dev Mode.
They would mean gaming would have to go back to a time where the developers enjoyed making games from their imagination and not because corporate want a certain type of game for profits
Lady Decade, there is a book I think you would really love that got a VERY limited publication via a kickstarter (unfortunately I don't know if it ever got a wider release) about 8 years ago called "Service Games - The Rise and Fall of SEGA" based on the old Eidolon's Inn website, but better organized and greatly expanded. For SEGA nerds it's basically a Bible, easily the most exhaustive and complete history of any gaming company ever documented in a single book. I mean... this book gets into tech specs of all the consoles and prototypes even. It covers everything from the pre-history of the company that set the stage for its founding on forward.

Ferrari then yelled he built tractors, and he knew nothing of sports cars. This kinda reminded me of that. I love businesses started out of spite.
SEGA and SIE are still tight to these days. When almost every third party abandoned PS3 including Namco (Bandai Namco) there was only SEGA who released their flagship titles on PS3. Virtua Fighter 5 was timed exclusive. More obscure titles like Valkyria Chronicles got moved from Xbox 360 to PS3 due to market shares in Japan. SIE went to SEGA to peak interest for Virtua Fighter again after they lost exclusivity of Tekken since Tekken 6 because of the merger between Namco and Bandai. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown was going to release on PS4 as f2p model on PS Plus. SIE had a better idea how many downloads VF5US will get and it exceeded SEGA's expectations. 8 million downloads in one month was SIE dead on with their forecast. And that's what you call a partnership or even a relationship. Successful partnership leads to a relationship in the end.
I always felt this one move was the key turning point for Sega. If they had worked with Sony they would have dominated that generation of consoles. (Imagine Square's Final Fantasy 7 on a Sega console)

By around 2001, Sega cut down on producing software for Dreamcast and ventured out to more platforms via Crazy Taxi ports. The Sega-PlayStation partnership was a thing not only for the first few Yakuza video games and Virtua Fighter 4 on PS2, but also a series of classic Sega game re-releases on the same platform and a Sega Saturn controller for PlayStation 2. If retro-bit and Sega made reproduction Mega Drive and Sega Saturn controllers for their respective platforms, then I just hope one day the two make reproduction Sega Saturn controllers for PlayStation 2.
Don't forget Shinobi and Kunoichi were part of that partnership as well. In fact, SCEE localized Virtua Fighter 4 and Shinobi in PAL region and Jim Ryan was at the helm. I do think their 2nd party partnership with Namco took more marketing space and SEGA's titles were overlooked which didn't made SEGA so happy. SIE lost Namco after they merged with Bandai in 2006. SCEE at the time lost partnership with SEGA as well. It was only SCEJ who made deals with SEGA of Japan. More specifically Yakuza games from Nagoshi.
At least Sega never had to work with Philips like Nintendo. I feel bad for Sega, Sony and Nintendo. also Microsoft doesn't stand a chance against Nintendo, Sega and Sony.
I never heard of this console ever. The funny part is the title itself for the fact Sega not only destroyed itself but also Sony destoryed it too with the sale numbers of PS1 and PS2 sales.
"Mistakes were made..." Love the Modern Vintage Gamer vibe there!! And wow, a Sega PlayStation...that would've been pretty sick...possibly moreso than the Nintendo PlayStation. And to think that Sega of Japan dissed Sony AND Sega of America as hard as they did...it's no wonder that Sony pretty much destroyed them, they had a chip on their shoulder the size of that very first model PS3!! I mean, Sony had mad beef, and they weren't gonna rest until they won. (Of course, the Sony Playstation DID have the concession of the 2D performance being a little bit on the wonky side due to the very limited RAM with no way to expand it) And win Sony did...Sega's just another third-party publisher, and Nintendo has been lagging behind the technological times since the Nintendo 64 and its cartridge format.
I'm betting Sony were laughing when they saw that the Sega Dreamcast was using a custom GD-ROM format and though "hang on, can't we churn out DVD mechanisms for all of eternity?" ...not that it stopped them using custom formats for everything else!
I wonder what would of happened if Sega and Sony had joined forces, Would Microsoft still of entered the gaming space and how would that of affected the market? Would Nintendo continue competing in the console wars instead of carving out their own niche? How would the Sega Sony relationship of lasted, would Sony eventually absorb Sega and drop the Sega branding? I have so many questions, none of which are answerable without travelling to a parallel dimension.
everything would be different with sony pushing gaming forward for 25 years ( some would argue that ) but it's hard to say where gaming would be today and would there be a xbox I'm going to say no that's my opinion.
Has anyone looked up what Sony wanted as their cut in these "shared" consoles? As in what Sony would make from releasing games on a potential Nintendo or Sega console?
Great content as always. I saw in another video you mentioned you were a mum of 2. Could you maybe think of doing a video on how to juggle gaming with responsibilities and finding time for it? Maybe certain genres or consoles (switch) lend themselves better towards players with tight schedules. I say this a father of 1, with and 2nd due in May. 👍
The PlayStation was my first console ever,my first game on the system was the Spider-Man 2000 game because my dad and uncle played it a lot when I was very little. My new number 1 favorite is FF7 and that was my also my very first Final Fantasy I have ever played,I love it more than Spider-Man 2000. 💯 MAJOR ASSUMPTION: The overworld is undeniably the open world but with random encounters,it is more fun equipping characters with their assigned materia. 😎👌🏻
I wish at the end when she answered the fan questiom about her favorite game and console she said " as many of you may already know, i dont play games, theyre for losers". 😂 that would have been a hilarious turn no one saw coming.
Nintendo Super Famicom is so legendary that it has two successors. A company successor in the Nintendo 64 and a spiritual successor in the Sony PlayStation.
i remember when i played FF7 a year late. i had no clue that a game could get so much clout. I wasnt aware that there were big hype parties back in 97 for Final Fantasy 7 and there was tons of lines with memorabilia being given away. i thought it was just a game that was released with promotion. so i understand why the 6 fans thinks its overrated but honestly that game gets the credit it deserves.
Which would eventually open the flood gate for advertising companies and kill the heart and charm of vidoe gaming and turn it into a corporate run business ,losing the soul it started from and just satisfying corporate and their sponsors and gamers that have no emotional connection to games . Just internet connection with headphones on ,doing anything to feed an addiction to trophies
it kind of reminds me of the time nintendo approached atari about partnering up with them to launch the NES in north america & atari said no & then years later sega approached atari with the genesis/mega drive & atari said no
Wouldn't it have been more likely for Sega to approach Atari to market the Master System? Atari's star had pretty much fallen by the time the MegaDrive came about. Their arcade division was now Time Warner Interactive and their computer division was owned by Jack Tramiel and far more interested in the Atari ST and Falcon (and thus getting revenge on Commodore for taking the Amiga away from him)
@@GeoNeilUK it might have made more sense but its what happened but atari was a mess at the time & sega waited to launch the master system 4 months after the atari 7800 had been released
Someone should make a movie about PlayStation vs Nintendo vs Sega and their origin stories and how they all crossed swords and who fell and ultimately triumphed!
i think underdog of sony benefitted in not having to satisfy two competing ideologies (japanese/u.s.) as did nintendo & sega. The over confidence of the two then market leaders will also have helped.
I honestly have no clue how anyone can call FF7 the best game ever. It's like trying to communicate with a martian, I'm sure you have your reasons and they make perfect sense to you, but whatever they are they're so alien to me that I can't even begin to comprehend them.
The funny thing about it is in 1994 the Sony PlayStation was just a Japanese video game system in the likes of the FM Towns Marty and Neo Geo 64. The systems out in 🇺🇸 or coming son was Atari Jaguar, Panasonic 3DO, Sega Saturn and Nintendo Project Reality AKA the future Nintendo Ultra 64.
Way back when Atari was going to pair with Nintendo to distribute the FamiCom in the states as the "Atari entertainment system". Atari backed out of the deal and Atari is a company failed. Likewise Nintendo tried to pair with Sony, backed out and took a huge hit. Sega then almost paired with Sony backed out & failed as a company. I think the lesson here is if a company approaches a video game company with a potential working deal take it!
Sony did seem crazy possessive then. They just failed with betamax video tapes and dvt digital audio tapes, and were compensating by buying up movie and music studios to completely control them and force them to utilize any future Sony tech.

In time I've been getting Playstations up to PS4 and PSVITA and the only Nintendo Systems I've currently have are Super Nintendo, Gameboy Advance SP, Nintendo DS and finally the first Edition Switch. I never got a 3DS (Though I wish I did), Switch Lite or OLED Version.
That is the most strange and interesting alternate reality line. I think that partnership wouldn't last for more than two generations.
What always impressed me is how Sega of Japan could backfire thenselves that critically.
Still longer than one generation when Nintendo and Sony brought the PlayStation as a SNES add on.
In the end, both giants were responsble for that outcome either way.
Hellooooo there Lady Decade ! Saw some of your videos already and just subscribed ! :-) One thing more. Have you getting thinner ? You look quite stunning ! ;-) Keep up the good work !
i just watched you rant video and loved it dont let any fucker put you down i think you videos are great i only found you channel a few months ago but i love all you content,,dont let the shits get to you x
Just wanted to say brilliant selection of peak Sega music throughout this video. Absolutely sublime.
Please do a video on the failed Sega-Bandai merger.
Sony does seem to love their 'fuck you' price reveals. Glad to see it's been there from the very start.
I think it was e3 1995, not 1994 as e3 didn't start until then
The readly link didn't work. Could be because i'm in Taiwan, but who knows? I wanted to read old editions of Super Play.
I never heard of this console ever. The funny part is the title itself for the fact Sega not only destroyed itself but also Sony destoryed it too with the sale numbers of PS1 and PS2 sales.
If you didnt know the playstation would have been a sega console if it wasnt for sega of japan than you dont know your gaming history.
Please do a video on the MSU-1 virtual chip as well, would be a good sequel video to this and the previous one :)
Love the wrestling references. It would be cool if you did wrestling videos the same way. Like stuff that almost happened
FF7 - one of the greatest games ever. Deep history, varied gameplay and a hell of a good soundtrack!
I find it hilarious that Nintendo backstabbed Sony with Philips of all companies LMFAO
5:26 obviously trying to hold it together to get the shot done, how many takes got blown from cracking up laughing? 🤣
I'm betting Sony were laughing when they saw that the Sega Dreamcast was using a custom GD-ROM format and though "hang on, can't we churn out DVD mechanisms for all of eternity?"
...not that it stopped them using custom formats for everything else!
This story warms my heart 🏆
I wonder what would of happened if Sega and Sony had joined forces,
Would Microsoft still of entered the gaming space and how would that of affected the market?
Would Nintendo continue competing in the console wars instead of carving out their own niche?
How would the Sega Sony relationship of lasted, would Sony eventually absorb Sega and drop the Sega branding?
I have so many questions, none of which are answerable without travelling to a parallel dimension.
everything would be different with sony pushing gaming forward for 25 years ( some would argue that ) but it's hard to say where gaming would be today and would there be a xbox I'm going to say no that's my opinion.
I knew I heard rumors about the Sega and PlayStation maybe team up. Thank you for proving I'm not totally insane
Nice plug there lady decade
The PlayStation was my first console ever,my first game on the system was the Spider-Man 2000 game because my dad and uncle played it a lot when I was very little. My new number 1 favorite is FF7 and that was my also my very first Final Fantasy I have ever played,I love it more than Spider-Man 2000. 💯
MAJOR ASSUMPTION: The overworld is undeniably the open world but with random encounters,it is more fun equipping characters with their assigned materia. 😎👌🏻
What if there was a Sega PlayStation, then we would have a Sega PlayStation 5.
I wish at the end when she answered the fan questiom about her favorite game and console she said " as many of you may already know, i dont play games, theyre for losers". 😂 that would have been a hilarious turn no one saw coming.
Great video.
send a hello to Brazil. I liked your video congratulations.
Everyone who screwed over Sony made both HUGE MISTAKES and HUGE GOOD.
Sony Owns its own properties and can out game the competition.
I sense a pattern here. Is the next episode on the Microsoft Dreamcast 2?
Love your videos! You look lovely as usual!
great video ,deffo didnt know about sega connection and btw great add integration didnt annoy me at all
What's the device in the thumbnail?
A prototype Sega Saturn.
@@LadyDecade Ah, cool.
@@LadyDecade Was that also backwards compatible with Sega Mega Drive/Genesis cartage games?
it kind of reminds me of the time nintendo approached atari about partnering up with them to launch the NES in north america & atari said no & then years later sega approached atari with the genesis/mega drive & atari said no
Wouldn't it have been more likely for Sega to approach Atari to market the Master System?
Whats going on a 9:58?
i think underdog of sony benefitted in not having to satisfy two competing ideologies (japanese/u.s.) as did nintendo & sega.
Tekken 3 asks you to choose a fighter for the fight against Nintendo but SEGA still didn't provide Fusion, that was left to Readly instead.
So this woman is telling me, if I sign up for readily, I don't have to hear her talk? Sign me up! 👍🤣
Nintendo would have taken a bigger hit if they stuck with the Sony deal. Goodbye autonomy and software royalties...
Sony did seem crazy possessive then.
They just failed with betamax video tapes and dvt digital audio tapes, and were compensating by buying up movie and music studios to completely control them and force them to utilize any future Sony tech.
you are great thankyou
Agreed 🤗
Without watching. The thumbnail has drawn me in. What a cool looking unit. 😳
Increíble historia , te felicito mucho por tus vídeos 👍 . Saludos desde colombia 🇨🇴
Video could have been titled "How Sega dropped the ball again on their long road towards destruction"
