It breaks my heart after witnessing his arc when people call Anakin "selfish" for turning to the dark side. I'm sure y'all will get to this point, but even up to Mortis, I understood why.
He was raised in slavery, had to leave his mother behind, went back to save her only for her to die in his arms. Mace Windu and Yoda were 100% correct when they said he was "too old" to be a Jedi and his feelings would lead to suffering. In my opinion, Qui Gon was the only Jedi Master that could have properly trained Anakin towards a bright future. Purely because he understood the importance and power that love and attachments can bring. But he was slain and trained to be any normal, unyielding Jedi. (Dave Feloni actually gives a great explanation in the BTS show of Mandalorian about why the battle in Phantom Menace is called Duel of the Fates.)
Jedi take younglings before they have any chance to "live" or understand family and love. Anakin knew those things. He had already suffered. And no one cared to ask how he was after slavery, after his mom died in his arms. And he loved so deeply for those around him but the Jedi didn't "care about him." The path they offered was not a good one either.
Only Padme and Palpatine showed interest in his past. When Palp offered a path without suffering, of course he turned.
Anyway I don't know if I explained my point well enough, but I am passionate so I tried. Either way, the Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (and any Sith) will always break my heart. But I know what George was trying to say. 😢
Also, the original myth of Oedipus was that his father aka King went to the Oracle when he was a baby. She told him that his son would kill him and marry his wife. King panics and abandons Oedipus. His life there after happens as we know it. But it was the King's fear of the future that kicked it off. Oedipus made choices to lead to that, but he wasn't aware of the prophecy until it was too late. Interesting comparison nonetheless. 😅

In regards to the speculation about the Chosen One, it was definitely Anakin, not Luke. Bear in mind that while Luke turned Vader back to the Light Side, he was merely the catalyst. It was Anakin who actually ended up destroying Palpatine and himself, fulfilling his destiny.

It's debatable, the interpretation of multiple chosen ones is a valid one. Anakin could be the chosen one or a chosen one, and Luke and Rey could be chosen ones following in his legacy. The force might have already created a chosen one before Anakin considering how long the history of force users is. There's nothing saying for sure that he's the first, and nothing that says he's the last. It's debatable

This is one of the few stories that George has a LOT of involvement with. It is probably one of the most important moments in the franchise and acts as both a tool for foreshadowing and reconciliation of the galaxy's origins. It not only explains the chosen one, it details the birth of the Jedi and Sith if you are more familiar with the extended lore. The implications that Obi-wan had no idea who the Father is truly shows how far the vanity of the Jedi had grown over some

Being selfish isn't a bad thing.
There's a LIMIT to that obviously, if you're too selfish then obviously you're a bastard, but just not wanting to sacrifice your own loved ones and the life you have shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. It is something you do for yourself, but it's not a bad thing.

What the Father said right here: “You are the Chosen One. You have brought balance to this world. Stay on this path and you will do it again… for the galaxy. But beware… your heart.”
He is telling Anakin to listen to his heart when the time is right. Which is true, while his heart drove him to the dark side, it also allowed him to kill Sidious to protect Luke from him. This whole trilogy was a metaphor for Anakin’s journey. He has to let the light side die first (The Jedi Order/The Daughter), and then he must kill what remains of the dark side (The Sith/The Son), and then he will die (Himself/The Father).
Also, It’s so interesting to see Anakin see himself as Vader and all the pain and death he will cause.

I find myself agreeing both with Suraj and Marketa. While it is true that Anakin very much acts selfishly and in favor of his attachments and his overwhelming fear of letting go and losing everything he cares about likely due to his PTSD from the death of his Mother, I also think of how many people would be dead were it not for Anakin and how those are examples of selflessness. Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, countless civilians on so many planets. They would have died so many times if it wasn't for him.

That selfishness makes him "human" (using human as replacement for his actual race). One needs both the light and dark (sister/brother) to truly be whole. Selflessness of the daughter and the competitive/driven spirt of the son. Balance is the constant theme in Stars Wars Universe, yet the Jedi became unbalanced. Hence, why they doom themselves for failure.

21:40 not really man, because order 66 would still happen, Palpatine would still become the emperor, but instead of Vader, he would have Dooku.
Anakin was needed in the to destroy Palpatine, that was the prophecy, it had nothing to do with Mortis
    summed up:
The father was getting old and he knew about the prophecy, so he thought that the person that is mentioned in the prophecy could replace him because he must've been very strong. Basically the Father was selfish, he wanted to "kidnap" the chosen one from a prophecy he had heard a long time ago to replace him in Mortis. He was selfish in the sense that he didn't care what would happen to the actual prophecy, but then again he may have acted in such a desperate way because he didn't know what would happen if he died and his son left Mortis.

In the Book Master & Apprentice it says “Only though sacrifice of many Jedi will the Order cleanse the sin done to the nameless. The danger of the path is not past, but sleeps in an egg. When the egg cracks, it will threaten the galaxy entire. When the Force itself sickens, past and future must split and combine. A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored”. Page 133-134.

And the Chosen One thing ..he is supposed to bring balance, for that he first needed to normalise the light side which was full of jedi who had lost their way, the ones who were not ready to change....so he wiped them out ....and when the Dark Side rose, he chucked the Dark Side man down a reactor shaft.....(And one more head canon that I have is that of the many inquisitors roaming around, Vader killed many of them himself for failing him ....we have seen that happen only once but that is my head canon).
And this wiping out needed to happen organically, which means it needs to be his own choice, and therefore the Father tells him to stay on this path.....
The beauty of Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader's character I feel is that he isn't completely good or completely evil....he is what human beings are in real life, flawed, everything happens to him is because of his own choices...and perhaps that's what Lucas is trying to tell us through this tragic character. And also that a man can never fall into the abyss so deep that he can't return back from down there....Human Beings have the quality of being inherently good

There's no way she's made it this far into the show and believes Anakin is selfish lmao. He's put his self in danger for others MULTIPLE TIMES and that's ignoring future episodes. Also He's clearly being influenced by the dark side of the force considering which part of the planet he's on and how force sensitive he is. When the son shows him the future he LITERALLY says "I will do such horrible things" and that's why he joins him, he doesn't care about what happens to his self he cares about the millions of people that will die because of him. During this time period there's arguably not a single jedi more caring than Anakin. Which possibly plays into why he doesn't join the father since they're in the middle of a war lol. Also saying Anakin could never be a good guy is RIDICULOUS.

How does putting his life in danger not make him selfish? He does the things he believes is right because he wants to be a good person. That's called being selfish.
Or, to put it a different perspective, the good he does for others is merely a side effect of his selfish desire to be better. Don't confuse the desire to be good with acting for the betterment of others.

    I quote Episode III:
*Obi-Wan:* (about Anakin) is he not the chosen one? Is he not to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force?
    *Windu:* So the prophecy says.
*Yoda:* A prophecy that misread could have been.
In the end Anakin does bring balance. But balance is not a thousand Jedi and just two sith. Balance is supposed to be equal and just like in this arc, in Mortis, Anakin did bring balance... through death. Ah, but balanced things nonetheless. Same with Episode VI, really. Even if the new trilogy brings Palps back, Anakin did balance the universe for a long time, he defeated the Emperor; it took Palpatine decades to come back and he was weak and in life support. Pretty much like Voldemort in The Philosopher's Stone(?

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain

Indeed. Palpatine coming back in no way calls into question Anakin's destiny. The prophecy stated that he would bring balance to the Force and save the universe, and he did. The prophecy never stated how long the Force and the universe would be balanced for. They all got a good 20-30 or so years before Darth Sidious returned in full.

I don't think it's fair to say Anakin is "selfish" because he didn't want to stay on that planet to keep the balance forever. Anakin grew up as a Slave. Why should anyone expect him to throw away his life and be bound to servitude like that again? Anakin was a slave, became a Jedi that the council did not trust, despite always using him to further their own influence and war. And he chose the brother in this episode because he was promised he could end all war and kill Palpatine. Anakin has proven many times to be completely selfless, including with Clone Troopers who many other Jedi see as nothing but canon fodder. Of course by the end of Episode 3, he falls to the dark side, but what do you expect when the Jedi Order literally treats him like a tool, rather than an equal

19:20 I strongly disagree... Anakin always tries to do the right thing even when faced with hard decisions. Like for example when Ahsoka was taken hostage by Cad Bane he let him take the holocrons in exchange for Ahsoka. And when Ahsoka was trapped underneath rubble with Barris Offee, Anakin never gave up in trying to find her even when Luminara said to let her go. (I feel like that episode really shows how selfless and kind Anakin is and sets him apart from the rest of the Jedi.) And even in RoTS Anakin did chose to go to the Dark side but he was motivated by selfless reasons. (Padme's Death, Balance in the force and Peace in the Galaxy) but his execution was wrong because he was being played by Darth Sidious.

Doing a difficult task doesn't make it not selfish. The underlying thing you need to keep in mind is not difficulty but desire.
Basically it's the choice between struggling through hardship because you believe that it will make you a better person vs turning your back on everything that attaches you to your life for the betterment of everyone else.
Doing the right thing because you want to be a better person is a selfish trait.

He did bring balance to the force, by destroying both factions that were abusing it. First, he destroyed the Jedi, embodied by the Son (Palpatine manipulating Anakin) killing the Daughter (obviously she represents the light side, or the Jedi, but could also represent Padme, since she still loved her brother and begged her father to forgive him before she died). Then, Vader (the Father) sacrifices himself to kill Palpatine (now the Son), thus wiping out the Sith and bringing back balance to the Force. Both the Jedi and Sith orders are gone, and the slate is wiped clean. The Chosen One has made the greatest sacrifice of all of them. He had to sacrifice his humanity, to save the galaxy.

@The Normies the son promised to put an end to curption, war and to bring peace and to change the future. That's literally the same thing that Darth sidious promised anakin in revenge of the sith. Basically what we learned from this is that anakin will literally choose to go to the darkside in order to save those he cares for. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy it's a time locked 🔒 event that will happen no matter what anyone tries to do. If anakin actually chose to stay there like the father asked of him to begin with then that would have actually completely changed the time-line and the force would have been in balance, either the jedi or sith would be in power they would either destroy each other or continue their fighting regardless of the war ending or not, anakin wouldn't have become Darth Vader, and Luke and Leia probably wouldn't have been born but considering that the force would be in balance anyway it it would just be a small sacrifice.

Wanting to end corruption and suffering, wanting the power necessary to do it… that's precisely what starts driving Anakin to the Dark Side. You see the first inkling of it in Episode II.
    Padmé: "You're not all-powerful, Ani."
    Anakin: "Well, I should be."
The path to his fall has been paved for a long time.

So the Father, Son, and Daughter were referenced in old Star Wars Legends stuff, and they were incorporated into the Clone Wars later on. I recall someone mentioning the Mother in either this episode or the last - in the current canon, the Mother does not exist. In the old canon, the Mother is an almost Eve-esque figure who began as a normal woman (though she may have been a Force adept) originally known as the Servant, who served the Trio.
Over her life, she eventually became known as the Mother and joined their family as a powerful wielder of Light and Dark who was, like the Father, able to quell fights between the Son and Daughter. But unlike the Father or the Children, the Mother was not immortal like the others. Because she was so scared to lose her family, she drank from the primordial Font of Power and Pool of Knowledge. Doing so granted her immortality, but heavily corrupted her. She became Abeloth, a terrifying and immortal cosmic entity that was able to possess bodies, drain people of the force, and also control the Force to an almost unmatched degree. She basically fed on fear and death.

This arc relates heavily to the duel of the fates. That duel in episode 1 was for the fate of the boy Anakin, whether Qui-gon lived or died determined the fate of Anakin.
This arc showed that without Qui-gon Anakin doesn't have the emotional maturity or knowledge of the force required to navigate situations like here and in Episode 3.
He is so caught up in fear. Fear of losing Padme, Ahsoka or Kenobi. Fearful failing them like he failed his mother, afraid of losing his life as a jedi and so on and so forth. if Qui-gon taught him he would have been able to accept that despite his power he will one day lose them but that's okay because as the son and luke and so many others have said said when it comes to the force "Nothing ever really dies".
That's why Qui-gon and the force focus on Anakin becoming Vader because the only hope of the force balancing was Anakin levelling the playing field by removing all the light and all the dark exactly like what happened on Mortis.
Anakin refused to balance the force himself (plan A) so the force made sure he inadvertently balanced the force (plan B). The light [Jedi] and the dark [Sith] had to be destroyed with both gone the force is in balance.
Essentially if Qui-gon had won against Maul Anakin would have grown up to be the Father of the Jedi order keeping it on balance with the will of the force rather than the will of the Galactic Republic.
It's very intricate writing but no way could Lucas fit it into films for 5 year olds

The father pretty much guaranteed Anakin's future.

4:17 the father, the daughter, and the son are incredible force wielders and the son and daughter are intense representations of the polarizing sides of the forth if you think about it in terms of this it begins to make more sense in regards to the sons "nature" as we see in Star Wars that heavily aligned force wielders of a respective side of the force tend to bring out the pure aspects of the dark that tend to mold their personality or corrupt it
its why the most far gone sith are often just intently obsessed with power to the point that their initial goals for acquiring power naturally fade as a hunger begins to infect their personality
the son is basically an embodiment of the dark side like no other force wielder ever seen so by the natural extension of what we see in most sith that grow more and more aligned with the dark side it explains the sons "nature" and personality though its not as if he doesn't love his family its just due to his connection with the force he's way more susceptible to the personality changes of that side of the force unlike any other sith

The thing about Anakin is that if the whole concept of a chosen one is based on destiny then it kind of makes it inevitable no matter what he does. Anakin could have stayed on that planet and the universe would have been like "Excuse me. Did I just catch you minding your own business? Unacceptable." Then Palpatine shows up because Palpatine. Destiny is like an annoying chore, you just have to deal with it the best way you can and move on.

I feel like people always say that balancing the force means having the same amount as Sith as there is Jedi. But I've never understood that. The chosen one prophecy is a Jedi prophecy. So they wouldn't want that to happen. I've always interpreted balance as meaning peace. If Vader killing Palpatine is what brings balance then peace makes the most sense coz there are no Sith left (until episode 9) but there is still Luke and eventually Leia (And technically also Grogu, Ahsoka, Ezra). So the equal number theory doesn't make sense in that regard. You could say he brings balance when order 66 happens but even that isn't true. Because we know that some Jedi/Light Side force users survive. So there is never actually an equal amount.

I'm surprised at how many people here don't understand Marketa's point. Or rather, I'm surprised at how many people don't seem to understand what it means to be selfish.
I keep seeing people bring up how many times Anakin puts his life in danger for others like that's some sort of argument for him not being selfish. But that IS what makes him selfish.
Anakin's drive is to become the best version of himself that he can be. He wants to live up to the hero he believes Jedi are. And he puts himself through hardship for these goals.
But that's exactly what makes him selfish. IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT HE WANTS! Jedi aren't Jedi because they are trying to fit into some perceived notion of what a Jedi should be. They are Jedi because they follow a code and do what is asked of them regardless of what their feelings are.
Anakin has shown that he's willing to throw away doing the right thing when it comes to protecting his attachments. This is a perfectly human thing to so and is very relatable. But it shows his selfish character flaws and how little he really accepts the Jedi code.

It's not inevitable its not set in stone Anakin still could have made a better choice which is why the Father warned him to beware of his heart. He had faith that through the will of the Force Anakin would bring balance ultimately but he could only hope that Anakin would choose to take the better route. Also just to reiterate the Father, Son, and Daughter weren't actually the Force itself they were just exceedingly powerful force users and the Son and Daughter each did things that resulted in them becoming so strongly Light and Dark side aligned. That is the possible backstory in Legends anyway. You can read about it on the wiki in the Legends tab.

But I so would have loved if he remembered it; it would give so much more depth to the moments when it comes true, particularly when he becomes Palpatine's apprentice. Like he knew this was coming, he didn't know the details, but he knew it was inevitable and now it's here and he just surrenders to it.
